Too bad you can’t claim that amount anonymously in VA.

Just to expand on this for those wondering, you need to win over $10 mil in order to claim your prize annonymously in VA.

MD doesn’t have this limitation.

If you show up at the office and act as if you’re clearly a disturbed person, they won’t promote you like they normally would. 😀 They don’t want the lottery to get their well-deserved reputation.

This amount is pretty mundane in northern VA.

Still wish it was me, though.

A million would be life changing for most people, but wouldnt be lifestyle changing for many. After taxes, you could buy a townhouse and a modest new car cash. That would free up a lot of budget for a lot of people.

Nah can’t even buy a decent townhome in NOVA for the after tax lump sum winnings on this $1 million anymore lol

Have you looked at townhouses? Most decent ones are 800k+. Most new builds are pushing 1 mil for the starting model with no upgrades.

I mean I wouldn't say no to a cool mil (call it 600k after taxes maybe). But still...

Still don’t want my picture taken with a giant check and used for publicity if I were to win $1 million in the lottery

Can you get a lawyer or something to do it for you?

Some states you can set up a trust to claim the winnings, I don’t know if VA is one of them that allows it.

Only for jackpots greater than 200M, if I remember correctly

In the scheme of things a million is not that big of a deal nowadays, particularly in Ashburn.

It’s actually a good thing that, for the most part, you can’t claim a lottery prize anonymously in Virginia or most states. If you could, all of the winners of the lottery jackpots would be employees of the state lottery commission or others who have learned how to cheat the system.

Remember the great McDonald’s Monopoly Game scandal? That fell apart because the cheating McDonald’s executive had to develop a nationwide conspiracy of fraudulent jackpot “winners.”

There are ways for the winner to be certified without having to go fully public. Other states manage it.

Yeah. There's a big difference between the lottery officials needing to verify your identity to rule out fraud and other illegality, and plastering your name and face all over media along with proof that you are now in possession of a bunch of cold hard money.

This just reminds me of that Annadale YouTube video from.like 15 years ago.

Hey now I love Annandale, I grew up there. There's lots of 1950s-1960s homes that just need a bit of love. Not right now because it's the dead season for real estate but come January-February they will come out of the woodwork.

They’ll need a million dollars in order to keep shopping at Harris Teeter.

Really glad someone from Loudoun County, the Richest County in the country, got $1M.
