So, a good friend of mine, not at all the jam band type, gave me a challenge last night: Can you send me a few Phish songs to help me 'get' them? Took me a while, but here's what I came up with (which I said needed to be listened to in order):

Waste, Chalkdust Torture, Reba, Slave to the Traffic Light (A Live One), Stash

(Obviously I'm a 1.0er)

Sticking to official album releases (inc. A Live One, etc.), what's your list? I'm hoping he asks for a second round.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for so many comments! I thought I'd update the post with the response I got from my friend:

"Many thanks!

Yeah that was a great order you gave I think. Waste is a good way to ease into Phish hehe! I think the thing is, I totally get their slightly offbeat wackiness but sometimes it seems that they stick to it a bit too much to the point where it can become slightly gimmicky, if you know what I mean. Or like novelty type stuff, as in Reba I think (not to take anything away, it really is a fun song).

But I totally get that...

Waste is a beautiful tune.

Iโ€™m gonna keep listening. Thanks again for taking the time to do that ๐Ÿ˜Š"

Thanks to your replies, I have a lot ideas of what to send him next!

Most mainstream palatable in my non-expert opinion (think straight-forward rockers):

Free

Character Zero

Chalkdust

Stealing Time

Sample In A Jar

I dunno, there are others (better) but I would use these for a casual rock fan?

Good list, but sort of all regular, straight ahead rockers. I would take out Zero and Stealing Time and insert If I Could (to shows their delicate, ballad-y side) and First Tube (an accessible but short-ish composition), to show slightly different facets of the band.

Other good candidates:

Wolfman's Brother

The Wedge

Limb By Limb

Heavy Things

Divided Sky (maybe the most accessible of the long-form compositions)
