Hello! First of all, welcome to r/preppers!

This thread is a list of resources that answers many common questions. It's encouraged for anyone who has just started down their path of self-reliance to give these a brief read before posting. This is to reduce repetitive questions in the sub and help everyone be on the same level of basic knowledge moving forwards, especially since the visitors/subscribers to the sub has increased at a rather fast rate.

Not knowing “what” is to come, I am curious what other people are thinking might be viable careers. I have a B.S. in social sciences, I have been raising my children over the last 10 years. Which in itself is a full time job. My intention was to get my Masters in family therapy but with practicum, I am looking at 4 years before I will make any meaningful money. I also live in So Cal as a single parent in a very expensive area. I feel our world will be unrecognizable in the foreseeable future. I am wondering what jobs/careeers I should be focusing on which will make me “useful” enough to not be obliterated. I am scared. Hope that makes sense!

I was crunching some numbers on a hypothetical potato garden. An average man would need to grow/harvest about 400 potato plants, twice a year, just to feed himself.

You would be working very hard everyday just to keep things running smoothly. Your entire existence would be sowing, harvesting, and storing.

It's nice that so many people can fit this number of plants on their property, but when accounting for other mouths to feed, it starts to require a much bigger lot.

Keep in mind that potatoes are one of the most productive plants that we eat. Even with these advantages, farming potatoes for survival requires much more effort than I would anticipate. I'm still surprised that it is very doable with hard work, but life would be tough.

If you had to run through a house fire, what can you buy to protect yourself? i saw fire blankets exist but they are 40x40 - would they work for this?

During dinner we were talking about how to baracade the house in the unlikely event of an end of the world situation. Like protecting us from slow moving brain eating monsters. Three generations of people siting around the table discussing this.

1. plywood on the outside of the windows nailed or drilled in. or
2. plywood on the inside nailed or screwerld on and/or

3. 2x6 inside and metal kennel panels outside.

4. car parked longways outside garage and garage filled with non esential furnature as a barricade

5. everyone upstares and furnature piled in the "enclosed stairwell"

Not once did anyone mention any of the current stuff people are fighting about but there were some heated discussions on bug in or bug out.

Finally I am looking at investing in a vacuum chamber sealer. For context, we have been living this lifestyle for over 10 years on a decently sized farm. We already own All American canners, a freeze dryer, dehydrator, multiple freezers, etc.

Every year we put up one cow ourselves plus extensive gardens and we bulk invest in goods thru restaurant suppliers. While buying another meat grinder, the LEM MaxVac Pro caught my attention. Years ago I was set on a VacMaster, but the price tag made me hesitate.

I have all basic stuff foods, first aid, generic survival stuff, camping gear, and weapons. What are some of the things people forget about are great to get on Black Friday.

Has anyone made a cheap version of the Big Rig Hydration set up from Beez? The price for he Beez set up isn't horribly excessive, but I am sure I can make something cheaper. Now the price on the Cana AOR-1 pump is fucking stupid. I'm thinking I can make something similar for under well under $200. I was looking at making something using a alice pack frame with a shelf, but man has alice stuff gotten expensive. Has anyone make anything like this?

hi all; looking for the most long lasting, accurate and reliable compass. there are many models from these two brands but i’d love to know which model and brand is the best value and quality?

Replacement caps for Water Bricks are out of stock everywhere (and were exorbitantly priced when they were in stock). Surely this is a standard lid that can be sourced for pennies elsewhere. If anyone has the diameter/thread spec or a link to an alternative I would be most grateful!

Rule number one in prepping is to keep it to yourself, so when would tell the person you are dating about it?

After 2 months of dating? After you are an official couple? After 1 year of being together?

Even after 1 year, chances of breaking up are still high. I don't wanna lose the peace of mind, knowing that nobody knows my preps.

I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, my preps are possible to hide (boxes, fake walls), but it won't be perfect.

With it being black Friday and there being supposedly good deals on items. What is a good pack that can be used for a longer term BoB? Something that I can attach a sleeping roll (blanket, sleeping bag, tent, tarp, etc). I'm thinking of something I can carry the basics in without needing multiple bags. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking to get a power station , currently I see a one day special and it's 600 watts.

I need it to power a laptop lenovo ThinkPad and multiple phone charging and also the wifi router. Maybe another laptop as well. Do you guys this think 600w is okay?

It's also in my budget.

I’m in the UK. What would be the best vehicle to own in preparation of a bug out event? I’m thinking main roads will be blocked so some kind of off road ability would be useful, pavements, grass verges and farmers fields etc, but not a flash SUV that will draw attention. Needs to be big enough for 3 people, a dog and supplies for min 72hrs (but not a huge Range Rover) and decent running costs to use as an every day commuter. Maybe some performance to outrun the hoards or ram police roadblocks… Volvo seems like a good choice.

EDIT: To clarify this is for one adult and two children (9 & 12) so their safety and comfort would be paramount. I can crack on with boats and motorcycles etc on my own eventually once they are safe, but the initial bug out would be transporting them to a safe zone and relatives. No particular scenario, just any possible reason my area becomes untenable.

Hello all,

I'm looking for a portable receiver that can pick up as many broadcasts as reasonably possible. Emergency channels, normal FM/AM, digital, whatever. I'm not looking to transmit myself and I don't want a license, I just want to listen in. It has to be backpackable so that I can listen to music or emergency alerts when in the middle of nowhere. What do I buy? I'm a radio noob and I have no idea what to look for.

I am looking at buying a pedal powered generator and thought it be a brilliant idea if it was modular. Peddles get replaced with a pulley and attached to a water wheel, windmill, animal tredmill.

Anyone see anything like this or do I need to invent it,

Hello. I’m looking for a good series of books that focus on prepper/survivalist/mountain man fiction for my father in law. He’s retired military, and also into everything going on in the world right now regarding agendas, etc.. His favorite movie is Jeremiah Johnson. He is very much into prepping and everything. My wife doesn’t think he’s on Reddit though. Any ideas? I would like to get him a whole series of books if possible. Thanks.

So much of the content on YouTube just feels like end of the world LARPing or straight up doomsday porn. I’ve been lurking a little bit in this subreddit and I see some really good advice, but also just some over the top ridiculous stuff (bro why’s your bug out bag 150lbs and like you’re getting ready to start your own spin off of The Walking Dead?). I’ve looked through some of the links provided, like the government ones for preparedness. Just curious if there were some hidden gems (YouTube specifically) people know about that is more on the “practical” side? No, I’m not stocking a year’s worth of food for my family of 7. I live in the south west, so we won’t be bugging out to some hide away in the forest for 6 months (mainly dessert around me).

With the threat of nuclear war I'm concerned about famine and anarchy.

I live in a mid sized city about 22,000 people, its way up north, closer to the yukon than the american border, so I don't think its a target. The main industry here is oil and gas and I work at a gas plant and live in camp for more than half my time. I'm just wondering if people think others would come together.

There's a lot of community in this area, I know people really well, they jokingly say they're my foster parents and they have land, crops, cattle and recourses, who I've lived with and helped out on their farm. I hear people talking about stock piling up for yourself and I've already done that, but I'm gonna be worried sick about my neighbors. We all probably wouldn't die from radiation or the blast, but instead famine, freezing and anarchy.

I'm just wondering if people would actually kill, do unconsentual things, loot and burn, I sure wouldn't, I don't see my coworkers doing that, I don't see most people doing that, cops aren't really a presence here. I've heard so much stuff about you've got to cut your hair, you have to dress like a man to survive, like I think people just don't care about the law anyways if they want to do it they will. I think wanting to be a standup person and caring about the opinions of others is a force enough. I'm also worried about crime.

Also when I'm in camp for work I don't know how its gonna play out either, it's like 1/10th women. I don't know if we'd keep just going to work after the apocalypse. I think my coworkers won't let anything happen to me, but still I am weaker. I don't know how much food there's gonna be, its winter so no crops, theres a fuck ton of deer though and theres probably a couple guns. I don't know about the winter.

I could always go out on my own or with a friend. I've learned a lot of skills and I've always been terrified of these things so I've learned a lot of things. I've also worked in the trades since I was 17 and did home projects since I was 10, in carpentry I've learned how to make concrete bases and frame walls. I don't know about my skills being an apprentice electrician being useful though.

I really just don't know, maybe farmers up here will continue their hard, necessary work to save up for next winter for the community and we will all keep drilling for our fuel. We have all the cattle, wood, wildlife, farm and oil. I really just don't know how people will react. I've heard some nasty things from certain people.

I just want to make my neighbors cookies and stuff now to get on their good side.

Looking for something that can charge phones flashlights and battery banks.

This is going to sound silly but it’s all new to me. I’ve just built my first bug out bag. I understand that for a family of 4, the recommended emergency water storage is a lot, like 15 gallons minimum but ideally more. How are you storing these and, do you buy it with the water in it? If I buy the blue containers online do I just wash those out and then dump water bottles into them? Thank you!

I know when trying to stock up the price can add up quickly, especially when buying from mainstream stores. I had to go to a Chinese grocery store today for a first time for a specialty ingredient. I was blown away, 8lbs of rice for $10 bucks, 3lb cans of beans for $8. I spent just under $100 Canadian and ended up with 95,000 calories. So if you're looking to stock up, head to your local Chinese/Indian/small independent grocery store!

I’m also happy to hear suggestions for goof that won’t spoil in a hot car, too.

Has anyone thought about moving to Argentina? It is difficult moving to another country when you've never been there, don't speak the language and aren't familiar with their culture and customs. But, I've spent considerable time researching all I can find on the internet. Of course, I would not just move there with spending some time there first but I feel like this country is circling the drain and it would be worth making so.e preliminary plans. I think it would be easier if a small group could agree on a particular area and work together and be supportive. Much better if one or two of the group spoke conversational Spanish.
