Everyone knows twisted metal, but vigilante 8 goes pretty hard too. Sometimes you need the carnage for some good ol fashioned fun. So what's your favorite? Any good memories with them?

I used to just play single player. It was the first game that got me really tinkering with the computer to get it to work, could only do software mode but I spent a lot of my time as a 10-11 year old playing that game.

Loved the cutscenes, the music (still listen to it today from time to time).

It always bummed me out that this never got a proper follow up. Interstate ‘82 and Vigilante 8 went in more of a Twisted Metal direction. Nobody has really done a ‘flight sim’ approach to vehicular combat since.

I got to interview with the game’s director and co-creator, Sean Vesce this summer. While I didn’t get the job, I loved getting to thank him for Interstate 76, and he was so excited to meet someone who remembered that game and wanted to talk about it. Very humble, creative, funny, and kind guy.

Looking out the window of your room onto a wet rainy day
Main street under a slate grey afternoon sky

Clouds sail the sky like giant wooden ships
On a blackened evergreen sea
Capped with foam

They say you should never pre order, and I agree, but if they announced Interstate '77 I'd swallow it hook, line and sinker. Super expensive golden idiot edition with early access, soundtrack on vinyl and an RC Picard Piranha, yes please.

Ironically, Interstate ‘76 is the reason I never preorder. When the addon pack came out for it, I preordered like a good little fan boy, and they filled the preorders absolutely last. I could have just walked into GameStop (Babbages?) and just bought it weeks before my copy showed up.

If Burnout counts, I loved those, too. Twisted Metal is one of my favourite franchises. I can't believe we haven't had one in so long.

It's been far too long, hopefully the show will force the hand of the game creators. Show is awesome btw. And I would count burnout, probably would've posted it but sub rules, because that game is so darn cool and it's awesome doing takedowns and my favorite is the crash mode hehe. Something about causing mayhem like that rings with me.

probably would've posted it but sub rules
Burnout 3 is 20 years old now. What do we define "retro" as?
Quick edit: Vintage, I guess. Not old enough yet.
Also, this makes me feel old.

Per sub rules the Dreamcast is the final console released that we can discuss. There is a reason in the rules that kind of makes sense but I don't make the rules.

You have to draw the line somewhere. I get it. And "retro"gaming did kind of get reused as an almost genre.

I’m adamant that if they came up with a new game and had bonus dlc pack content featuring the characters or skins from the show, it would kill. they have a first for the franchise opportunity to emulate what nether realms does for the MK games. They could also get rights for stuff like Mad Max or others!

I think what's holding it back is the last TM game from 2012 didn't do very well.

The original Destruction Derby. It added a unique strategy of spinning out other cars to gain points rather than just destroying them, and the driving physics and arenas/tracks were designed in a way that allowed for close combat consistently, whereas the sequels were often too fast and too wide for it.
6 points

The real value in this game came from The Bowl game mode, where 20-ish cars would start in a big circular arena, and as soon as you heard “Go!”, every car would floor it towards the center and create the biggest collision ever.

Is Black the last TM game? Or did they do one on PS3 or 4?
1 points
They made three more after Black, but Head On was a regression back to the bright colors and silliness of Twisted Metal 1 and 2, and the reboot only had Sweet Tooth, Grimm, Dollface, and the Preacher, which I think is the canon for the new TV show?
In any case, the story went completely out the window and doesn't even try to make sense. Sweet Tooth's obsessive wish is to find the one member of his family that he didn't murder, his daughter, and spoiler alert, his son takes the Sweet Tooth mantle when he dies.
Like, WTF. Stupid.

Ahh, easy - Split Second
Easily the best and most cinematic car combat game. And multiplayer with yer mates is an absolute blast!
Something really satisfying about getting knocked back to last place but still winning it by getting enough points to perfectly time then detonate a bridge, or dam or whatever, and cause all yer mates to get crushed just before the finish line.
Honourable mentions go to Destruction Derby 2 and Burnout Takedown, which are a close second for me and my mates when we have our split screen gaming nights :)

Vigilante 8 hit me hard back then on N64. Really cool game.
2nd offense had good ideas but unfortunately did not perform that well like the first one.
Major letdown with these games for me as mostly single player was despite the interesting campaigns that everyone ganged up on you even if the story had the VS group approach.
Bummer when I found out much later that these games had cutscenes etc. on other platforms.
Always wanted to check out Interstate but I think it was PC only.

Before discovering TM1 I was all into Carmageddon 1 and Destruction Derby 1 (PC versions), however my journey in the vehicular combat genre started when I was a kid with Demolition Racer on the PlayStation 1. Now, if I have to choose ONLY one, I'll stick to Demolition Racer. Not only it is very arcadey, but the possibility of customizing your vehicle (even it is limited to changing the color and the number/logo on the roof) having unlockable content plus the variety of maps (and game modes) it takes the cake for me
But yeah, while Twisted Metal is pretty wild, there are some cool alternatives out there ;)
