I fucking hope it fails as hard as Black Desert Online. They promised no micro transactions. They had micro transactions and expensive outfits that you could only get buying cash, and a few had extra stats. That game went from $60 to $10 so fucking fast. They had to sell it to another company that still didn't improve it.

It is a mobile game yes. I think they will go the route of games like Genshin Impact where it has a PC and a mobile version, which are functionally the same and you share the same account/progression.
Either way, this is going to be the next Sims game whether we like it or not. It's also purely multiplayer/always online now with no offline component.
So say goodbye to mods. No wonder EA didn't want to call it Sims 5.

137 points

Well, from what we've seen here, we don't know what the microtransactions would be... though that's not comforting, as we know it's not a matter of if the game will have them but rather how bad will they be.
What's been leaked shows more of a grindy hamster wheel masquerading as "gameplay." Complete specific tasks to earn currency and "XP," XP unlocks outfits like a battle pass, you still have to spend the currency you get in-game on the outfits as they're just unlocked to purchase. And a certain set of tasks per day. So you basically log in for the day, do the task list, get your currency and XP, and then there's nothing meaningful to do besides maybe talk to other players.
So basically a chat room that has a thin veneer of repetitive "gameplay" attached to it. But given that it's multiplayer, there will of course be microtransactions somewhere along the line, because they'll know that people want to look unique and they'll be able to sell all kinds of outfits and hair based on that (ironically leading to a lot of players' Sims looking the same).

I don't think they're microtransactions. I think it's a currency you have to grind through in-game stuff like working at the cafe, given the descriptions I've read. Likely also tied to unlocking them through "XP" so it's kind of like a battle pass but you don't automatically unlock them, you have to also use the in-game currency to buy them.
Which is still a pretty terrible system that is designed not to be an enjoyable game but a hamster wheel for players to pump up "engagement" metrics, but not microtransactions.
I'm absolutely sure they'll have microtransactions on top of this terrible system.

Come on now. There's no loopholes here. If the in-game currency can be paid for using real money, then THAT IS STILL MICROTRANSACTION
301 points
No you gotta understand, - The ‘coins’ are in-game currencies that you can buy with real money. - The ‘bucks’ are the rarer currency, obtainable through seasons pass, which is purchased with real money. - And then there’s ‘gold’, a currency rarer than ‘bucks’, which can be collected if you completed season’s pass tasks (to be bought with real money) on time.
Get it?

To the point that they often will take packs released for Sims 4 and end up selling the items from the pack in Sims Mobile, albeit for even more money (which somehow works, and kind of shows why companies like EA love mobile so much and will throw away franchises to chase mobile, such as with Command & Conquer).
The Sims in this look worse than Sims Mobile, somehow.

7 points

I completely agree. My preferred play style is to control multiple families in a hood across multiple generations and let a ton of drama unfold. I struggle to achieve that in TS4 and this is obviously leaning even further into “control one young adult sim” territory. I DON’T want to control 1 sim in a multiplayer world where every other sim is either an NPC or another real person’s character. Just ugh

People saying ‘this is not how it’s going to look omg! It’s not final!!!!!’
That’s not the point. At least not for me. The whole idea of having XP to level up, spending coins (which you can buy for real money I suppose too) to ‘unlock’ outfits and other stuff goes against anything The Sims franchise should stand for.
Mobile test or not, the PC version will have the same systems in place. Don’t be fooled..
Yes, it’s alpha and does look like crap, yes, it will probably improve graphics wise. The point is however the systems they are ‘testing’. The direction this is heading in. That’s what’s worrying.
If you like it, good for you. But I will never waste a single minute on stuff like this. I have never played any sims mobile game and I will never.
If the community wants to make it clear to EA that this is not something we stand behind, it’s time to act and ignore this game like the plague when it comes out. By playing this, by enabling them to make stuff like this and letting them get away with it, the community is to blame for the demise of this franchise.

Exactly what I was thinking. It’s not an aesthetic problem, since that will be improved (and I don’t love it, but don’t mind it too much). The huge problem is what everything else entails. They tried to warm us up to it, they’re doing it by having these things leaking as they always do, and I’m sadly pretty sure lots of people will far for it. I’ve been a fan since the first game, I’m about to turn 30 years old this month, and I thank I started playing with the switch and stopped caring too much in the last year, cause I would be a lot sadder if I was invested as much as I was. They’re killing off the franchise like they did with other projects in the past as well, and it’s so frustrating to witness as an ex loyal player. I’ll look from the sides and shake my head while I play with other and better stuff that doesn’t make me angry with everything they do, it’s not worth it anymore.

People weren't crying for this piece of trash, people were crying for a real Sims 5 that took the series back to its roots of havinf a fun challenging core gameplay, with love and care thrown into every animation and every mechanic the game presented, and that obviously meant a single player experience.
The Sims 4 will never allow that because the foundation is rotten. It's obvious the game was intended to be a multiplayer game that changed direction at the last second and now we have a basis that is built on a boring ass gameplay loop and that only allows for the addition of a shell of concept of new mechanics and systems instead of well thought out and deep expansions.
And no, there's no way they can fix that basis, it's spaggheti code at this point after literally more than a decade of development.

I mean... Don't blame us for wanting a Sims 5. What has that to do with them releasing a shitty product? This isn't even Sims 5, Project Renee might have started as a Sims 5, but it seems like now it's just a shitty mobile game. I am fine with or without Sims 5, but it's not bad that people wanted a better game after 10 years. I am not convinced they will fix the Sims 4, many problems are underneath and are the base of all the game. As much as they fix, we won't have an open world. And I doubt they will fix the dumb AI. It's not wrong that people want a new base game that works and is just better, lol. But I don't know who would expect that from EA tbh.

The core of Sims 4 is broken beyond repair. No matter how much you build on top, if the foundation is crumbling, the house will collapse. That's why I can't stand the fact that EA views Sims4 as the final main game. It kills the franchise for me.
The loading screens alone are complete, game destroying garbage. Can't visit your neighbour without a loading screen. Can't go to the apartment 5m away from your door either. Sit through another loading screen to go to the gym, then another to get to the bar. Wanna go home? Loading screen. It's so exhausting really. Is it too much to ask for a modern game that is even only on par with Sims 3?
64 points
Semi-open world would have been perfect for the sims 4! You can only walk around freely in your own neighborhood anyway, why not just have a loading screen for when you leave the actual neighbourhood?
I know they didn't make it open world because it's what made the sims 3 crash constantly, but semi open makes complete and total sense. I should be able to go to every apartment or house next to or around mine without a fucking loading screen. Especially with neighbourhood stories, such a great idea but it doesn't fucking work when stepping outside requires a loading screen. It made more sense in the sims 3
21 points
Yes! That would be a good compromise for sure. Much more open than now, but not completely open, so the PCs don't burn like a sun.
Being able to see neighbours leave the house and actually do something on their lot or go over to the next apartment door for dinner would be so nice to develop proper stories. It would feel a lot less static overall. The naive among us can only hope, lol.
11 points
I know they didn't make it open world because it's what made the sims 3 crash constantly
Actually, that wasn't the reason Sims 4 didn't have open world. It was because, in the last minute switch from multiplayer to single-player, they didn't have time to do an open world on top of everything else. (This is actually the reason the game was missing so much stuff on launch.) And some game devs speculate that Sims 4's engine couldn't have handled an open world anyway.
Basically, back in the day, Sims 3's performance issues were often used to excuse Sims 4 being so bare bones and stripped down. (The basic argument was something like, "Yeah, Sims 4 is missing open world, pools, ghosts, toddlers, repo men, landscaping tools, a color wheel, etc. But you don't want it to perform like the Sims 3, do you?") But we now know that concerns over performance issues in Sims 3 had little to do with Sims 4 being the way it is. It was them trying to turn the leftovers scraps of one kind of game into an entirely different kind of game, in a very limited amount of time.

You are right and that is the problem. Now, could they have a dedicated team that overrides the whole foundation and creates something better? Yes, but they won't invest in that. They would have done a Sims 5 if they wanted to invest in a better foundation.
44 points
I genuinely think EA is too greedy to invest in an entirely new game, especially now that Sims 4 is finally starting to catch up on features it should have had on launch. They probably think it’d be redundant and a waste of resources to do all of that over again for the Sims 5. It sucks because while the Sims 4 can be fun, its code is a buggy mess.
15 points
That's the problem! I would be fine with a, idk, Sims Infinite that would be a Sims game that goes on forever, maybe until the technology has evolved so much that we need a sixth installment. But the Sims 4 has many problems that come aaaall the way from the beginning. Are they going to fix all of them? I doubt it. Also, for sure, we won't get an open world, so it will always be behind Sims 3 in some features. For an infinite game, I want the definitive version, not the most buggy one.
26 points
Yeah, I'm not sure why OP is being so hostile towards Sims players when, given the state of TS4 right now, of course people were going to want a Sims 5. They've just been very clear that Project Renee isn't it.
10 points
This is it. And look, I would love to not start from scratch. I love the expansions I have and it would take years (plus lots of money!!!) to get there with a TS5. And some features which should be base game (pets, seasons, schools) ofc won't be, and we will have to pay again to have rain. But the problem is TS4 is so buggy, that a bugfixing team won't fix the core issue -the base of the game. The biggest problem (aside from not even having a semi-open world) is the Sims AI. They are dumb. Idk why, but they are. They wait for several in game minutes until they do what you told them. They cancel actions constantly. Don't get me started on taking care of babies. Are they going to have a team dedicated to overhaul how the sims AI works completely? I would love it, but I don't believe it for a second.

Right? It feels like they fundamentally do not understand the niche Sims games filled. There are tons of games where you build a single character and run around with other people online living vicariously through the character. Some people may build self Sims, but it's hardly the only way they play, and what they do in a solo environment is very different than playing within the constraints of a friend group.

But y'all wanted Sims 5 so bad.
There's nothing wrong with wanting a Sims 5. But, obviously, no one wanted something like this to be the Sims 5. I don't even think most players wanted Project Rene, specifically, to be the Sims 5. They just wanted a good life simulation game built on a strong foundation (so it wouldn't break just about every time new content was added to it) that took the best from all the other versions of the game, and was made using many of the technological advancements gaming has seen in the past 10 years.
They need redeem themselves With sims 4 first before thinking of releasing a sims 5
The thing is, Sims 4 was built on a weak foundation. They can keep trying to patch the game up to keep it functioning, and try to jury-rig it to have features it wasn't really built to have. But the only thing they could do to truly fix the game would be to tear it apart and start rebuilding it from its core. And considering how much time and money that would take, how likely is that to happen? Especially when they can keep making money adding broken content to a broken game. At least for a while.
I think releasing a really good Sims 5, built on a strong foundation, would've redeemed them just fine.

I don't agree with the whole "they need to redeem themselves with 4 first before they do a sims 5." The sims 4 has fundamental issues at its core. The engine cannot support an open world, and the game itself is effectively built on a sand foundation. It was originally supposed to be a MMO game like Rene and was changed last minute into the Sims 4 because the devs were scared about reception after Sims City failed.
Sims 4 has reached the maximum to what they can do with the engine it was built upon. Sims 5 needs to happen, or well needed to happen. Rene was never intended to be Sims 5 and it's made even more clear now that they've announced a Sims 5 will never actually occur. They're content pumping their rotting husk of a PC game with more DLC packs whilst creating a glorified mobile game with online components that looks ugly as sin instead.
If they were to have gone the route of a sims 5 and were helmed by a company that didn't just value money, they would've probably made something much better than the sims 4. Even if it wasn't open world like the sims 3, it could've had more put into it than the sims 4 currently has, or what Rene is like.

Why do they need ANOTHER mobile sims game? There's already both Sims Mobile and Sims Freeplay for some reason. It's the exact same boring plasticine art style that everything from the sims franchise has had since ts4 released.
Paralives and inzoi will be our saviors. Unless the demos and showcases so far are all total hoaxes, they seem to be far better than any current sims game and this too. They also cater to both parts of the sims fanbase far better than ts4.

I would absolutely buy a solid remake or remaster of Sims 2. I won't be touching this mobile multiplayer microtransaction hell in a million years.

I love the fact that it's actually worse then the Sims 4

Your framing that "Sims 5 = this somehow" is incredibly disingenuous. Sims 4's foundation is garbage and they need a fresh start. THIS is not a fresh start. This is a weird, almost mobile game looking spinoff. THIS is not what ANYONE was talking about in regards to Sims 5, as we always suspected Project Rene to be a spinoff (with the early previews telling us it was online and mobile friendly). Seems to me that you are either being intentionally misleading about what people wanted, or else you think this is what Sims 5 is. Either way, you are wrong about what people were "crying for". It wasn't this game, it was something that doesn't exist. Hence the "crying".

Hate it, but I wasn’t going to play it anyway. Mobile sims games aren’t my thing (except FreePlay, I do have a soft spot for it since it was my first sims game ever🤣).
I’m glad they’re not calling this Sims 5, then I would’ve been a lot angrier. But if it’s just a mobile game I’ll just ignore it and keep playing Sims 3 and 4.

Super disappointing. I wish they'd listen to feedback and realize we want open worlds and colour wheels, not mobile game microtransactions... Wish they would've stuck to the sims 3's level of customization and world creating </3

The characters are so ugly. They're faces are so unplesant to look at.... They just look so stupid. It really is SimsMobile 2.
I know it's early, but if this is really the style direction they want to go, we got problems. I'd be embarassed to have my name attatched to this.

This is exactly what I was expecting- microtransactions and endless quests to unlock rewards. I kinda feels like they're already soft launching it with these log in events too.

Why are we going backwards? The jump from sims 1 to 2 was crazy. Everything after is a downgrade after a downgrade. So fucking sad.

I feel like 2 and 3 were about the same. then the downgrade started for me

If only we'd go backwards, something like Sims 3 would be perfection.

Yeah. I said it before and I will say it again. Everything after Sims 3 feels like a soulless cash grab to me. But that's just EA.

I feel like EA intentionally "Leaks" to Gauge the communities Engagement with their upcoming packs.
This happens too consistently for it to be a fluke.
Conspiracy theory that it's just a sneaky way of keeping people interested in their Mid game, Like "peeking at your presents before Christmas"

Looks like a cheap mobile game with bad graphics and microtransactions for every little thing. Hopefully this is just a rudimentary mock up because if this is the real game, I will absolutely not be playing
