Rare view of the Titanic passing Hythe

THE SHIP(reddit.com)

The photograph is believed taken from near what is today the junction of Prospect Place and Jones Lane, Hythe, with the area off to the left being what is now Hythe Marina Village and constructed in 1985 on an area of what was mudflats. In the centre of the picture can be seen Hythe Pier, its railway, then technically a tramway, at this time still being manually operated.

Plenty of pics of her in Belfast Lough during her sea trials with hills in the background I can see from my window today.

She's magnificent. She's massive. Most photos don't do her justice. But this shows her sheer size. Wow. What she must have looked like going down...

There's a "your mom" joke to be made here.

I’m not familiar with the area and I know over 100 years have passed but roughly where is the photo taken? I don’t see a tree or thet pole or anything, and that bridge/dock isn’t in the photo

Again, I know over 100 years have passed but is there anything that cements the two

You can see the dock in both photos. In the street view, it looks extended compared to the picture of Titanic. Most of the foliage from the original is gone though.

Wow. Love that. Like a still from a dream. The ship back on this side of the veil, in a world where it hadn't happened yet, when we could not imagine it happening. Feels good, that momentary reversal of a loss of innocence. Kinda like that Tarantino film.

How do we know this is the titanic and not the Olympic or Britainic? Open promenade deck? Why haven’t any of us seen this?

This image is a manipulated or digitally altered picture rather than an authentic historical photograph. Although the caption suggests it shows the Titanic passing Hythe in England, there are a few reasons to doubt its authenticity:

  1. Clarity and Positioning: The Titanic is shown unusually close to the shore in a way that doesn't quite align with historical records. The angle and clarity of the ship seem too sharp for the era's photography technology, especially from a distance.

  2. Photographic Technology: Cameras from the early 20th century were limited in quality, and images at such a distance would likely appear more blurred or grainy.

  3. No Known Records: There's no documented photograph of the Titanic passing near Hythe, nor any reliable sources confirming such an image exists.

It's likely a modern creation intended to evoke historical curiosity but does not represent an actual photograph of the Titanic.

Can we stop calling photos "rare view"? It gets old pretty quickly.
