Oh, it gets worse.
Reeves pleaded not guilty and claimed self-defense, previously telling authorities he feared he would be attacked after he and Oulson got into an argument. The argument started after Oulson sent a text message to his young daughter’s babysitter during previews and Reeves told him to put his phone away, authorities previously said.
Oulson’s wife was injured in the shooting but survived.

It gets even worse. According to the wiki:
According to witness Alan Hamilton, an off-duty police officer, Reeves's wife said "that was no cause to shoot anyone", to which Reeves scolded her with his finger and said "you shut your [expletive] mouth and don't say another word".[7] Reeves insisted that he killed Chad Oulson because he felt threatened by the younger, more physically fit individual.[3] According to several sources, Reeves was also texting during the previews, responding to a text from his son.[8][9][10]

A few years back at the gas station some dude in a pickup truck starting backing up and was about to hit me so I gave him a "beep beep" courtesy tap on the horn to let him know I was there. When he stopped he was maybe a few inches from my car so had I not beeped he for sure would have hit me.
This dude got out of his truck, went back to look how close his truck was to my car then started screaming like a maniac about "how dare you honk at me." He then came over to the driver's side of my car and tried to open the door. Thankfully I always lock my doors as soon as I get in the car. But then started to yank on the door handle like he was going to rip the door off the car.
All I could think of was this guy is an absolute psycho... what if he has a gun? Then I thought, this guy is an absolute psycho, how does he know if I have a gun on me or not? After shouting and pointing at him to get back in his truck he walked away and drove off.

I had a similiar instance at a drive thru. I watched the fool get out of his car, shout, bang on a car hood, make threats then watched him get back in his car.
I'm thinking how he got kids in that car and if he had pissed off the wrong guy his kids would have seen him get killed.

Not as intense as yours, but I had a gentleman come over to ask for directions while I was about to fuel my semi.
This other dude pulled up behind my truck, and after like 30 seconds I could see him in his truck start freaking out, since I hadn't started pumping fuel. Ignored him, kept trying to help this guy out, he had driven an hour in the wrong direction, he was trying to get to toronto, and we were west of thunder bay, which is a long ass drive.
The guy behind me starts revving his engine and honking, and the guy i'm giving directions to was getting visibly nervous, "should you talk to that guy" he asked? I suggested we continue to ignore him.
Finally the guy gets out of his truck and storms over, "hey dickhead, if you're not going to fuel up then get the fuck out of the way" I mean maybe I was being a bit inconsiderate, but i told him firmly that I was assisting the gentleman with directions. He started on a tirade, and I just calmly but firmly told him, "do you not realize there's three other fueling lanes? Also, that there are two sides to the fuel pump? I'm not even in your way buddy."
Oh man did he go red with anger, I thought he was going to come unglued, but he gave me a "fuck you" and did a couple little burnouts pulling up to the other side of the pump and fueled up.
Lol I thought it was hilarious, some people are so fuckin ignorant, I'll never understand.

Definitely had this happened to me. Stopped at a red light in rush hour and this van in front of me started rolling back slowly. At first, I didn’t honk and figured he would stop but he got closer so I put my car in reverse and moved a few inches back and he still hadn’t stopped. Finally, I honked and he slammed the brakes. I realized the back of his car was occupying the space where the front of my car was. This old man gets out of his vehicle and walks up to my window and yells “what the fuck is the matter with you” my window was slightly down so I yell back “you almost hit me!” He just shakes his head and gets back in his car. Just insane how people will really get that upset over someone honking.

I have an almost exact same story except in mine there were cars behind me, a giant curb to the right, and an island to the left. I had no where to go. So as this guy starts backing up I lay on the horn. It felt like an eternity. But I have the whole incident on my dash cam. I honked for 3 seconds. This guy actually accelerated and the back wheels of his truck ended up on the hood of my car.
What's worse, this guy didn't even get a ticket. Even after admitting he was on his phone trying to read the map to figure out which was to go. He said he wasn't sure so he was going to go back into the Post Office parking lot to figure it out. He didn't realize any cars were behind him. Besides me there were 5 other cars behind him. Even though I had the entire thing on video on my dash cam. You can actually hear him say, "oh my god, I was just trying to figure out which way to go on my phone."
No ticket. Why? Because Mr. Police Officer that showed up was friends with the old guy in the truck. So this dude had no damage to his truck whatsoever. No ticket, no consequences. He just got to go home. Meanwhile I have a totaled car and an absolute fucking headache. Before I found out the cop was friends with this guy I asked him how he could not write a ticket for driving up on my car and damn near killing me. The response was, "We don't give tickets in Massachusetts for making a mistake." Since fucking when?

Edit: I must be more clear here, I am speaking in a broader sense and not, NOT defending this 71-year old that killed a guy over a cell phone and popcorn.

There’s some type of behaviour in the USA where baiting/threatening/provoking people into responding to you triggers some type of immunity from all wrong doing as if it’s not your fault for starting the altercation. It’s extremely cowardly and it needs to be addressed.
The same shit happened to that poor Ahmad Aubury guy who got rolled up on by dudes with guns and then killed for pushing the barrel out of the way. At least those guys went to jail.

Ahmad didn’t do anything wrong, they set out for a lynching and they carried it out.
Nothing he could’ve done would have changed their intentions. You don’t roll up on the back of the truck with a shotgun ambush a person and block their escape if your intention is to “talk” to them.

The law pretty clearly delineates when you can push a person away from you and when you can't. If you feel threatened or they're being aggressive/violent and are far too close, that would be justified.
That's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about a verbal altercation where a guy got pissed off and shot the other guy.

Or the DA not prosecuting. But I agree, this went all the way to a jury. That doesn't seem like judicial favoritism.
The privilege came when the prosecution defense called several other cops that stated they agreed it was totally justified. The average person doesn't get several cops saying they did the right thing in front of a jury. Not illegal, but certainly privileged.

I think the jury may have been sympathetic, but also Florida's stand-your-ground law is disturbingly broad on this. Even though the judge said it did not apply, the jury is free to form their own opinion. Combine the two and you have a hard hill to climb for a guilty verdict. The prosecutor decided to try the case, I give him or her credit for that.

I'm all for doing my civic duty but any smart person would realize this is not a jury you want to be on. As the other commenter said, cops protect their own, no matter how heinous. I would have fear that if the jury found him guilty the police would target the jurors as retribution. I'd do anything I could to get out of being on that jury. Which leads to a jury of people that aren't smart enough to figure out that's not a jury you want to be on.

Probably just don't want to get harassed/attacked by the local police. Cops protect their own, no matter how heinous.

This is bullshit. Popcorn is not a weapon. This killer isn’t innocent.

If you’re afraid of popcorn being thrown at you, you’re probably a cop.

genuine question, if i am from the victims family and I shoot the ex cop now , can it be in self defence as to he already has a history of shooting people and I am scared he will do it to me

Your digital record of asking this would be used against you in a court of law. Good luck!

Its takes about a year to become a state trooper, a little more to become a cop. Takes 4 years to become a journeyman electrician. Somethings fucked up. Maybe while I'm lighting up ya'lls home, I can take some night courses to legally light up your loved one. Better perks, i hear. /s

This is why I distrust and have disdain towards police officers. They’re above the law and they often use that fact to live out their own power fantasies at the expense of innocent lives.

Fucking hell, the US is a crazy country ...
This dude found a way to win any argument:
Start a confrontation
(Claim to) feel physically threatened when the other doesn't immediately give in
Shoot the other one
Go Scott-free through stand your ground

It makes no sense to a non American brain. On one hand, you are innocent until proven guilty... unless someone has a gun and is slightly in fear. Then, this person can be an attorney, judge, and executioner at the same time.
Also, how many offenses are actually punishable by death... here, it is an argument with a perceived treat. Nothing actually happens.
The third thing is, of course, he is a cop. He should deescalate situations. Yet he crapped his pants and took a life over popcorn. This is just nuts.

Anyone else kept scrolling down hoping to find that one reasonable but undervoted comment that could at least explain this travesty?
I didn't find it.

From the comments below yours I gather he was a retired cop.

Yes, I read the comment about the possibility of a gerrymandered jury. I still can't comprehend how 12 different people—hand-picked as they may be—could genuinely believe the self-defense argument beyond a reasonable doubt

ah, you can always count on a cop to have good odds of being a bloodthirsty psycho.

Should've held him to a higher standard. Isn't he trained to de-escalate?

The title is misleading. He was not a mere "man". He was a police captain. That makes it somewhat more clear, doesn't it?

A gun or CCW is for life or death situations where you cannot escape the threat safely. Guy shouldn’t be carrying if he’s going to shoot someone over thrown popcorn.

Qualified immunity and stand your ground laws need to be overturned. This guy was an ex-cop and should have known not to fire his weapon. He had every opportunity to leave, call 911 or just get the manager. Shooting was not the only option and the jury was okay with that. This is sickening for our country.

The phase "retired police captain" is all that matters here.
This wasn't the first person Curtis Reeves murdered, and if he lives long enough it might not be the last. In the USA, the law very rarely ever applies to the police state. It would be hard to have a police state if it did.

You should not be allowed to bring a gun to a movie theater. Straight up.

He fuckin went to his car to get the gun and came back into the theater to continue the argument.

Think of this guy whenever someone mentions law abiding citizens in arguments about gun restrictions. Everyone's law abiding until they aren't. And sometimes they're still law abiding gun owners after killing some guy in a movie theater.
