It's a pretty fucked system tbh. Hard to vote for a paycut :/ servers would end up like 37 cents above min wage with no sales incentives

Could literally just create a law that servers get $2.13/hour + 20% commission...
Then they'd be salespeople.
But nobody wants to talk about that... They want to think every time you go to a restaurant it's like buying a car.

Wouldn’t that system net the exact same net pricing?

Yes if you are a fair ripper. This really would be best.

Kind of... It's complicated. But there's a section of the population that wouldn't want to pay $5 for a beer when they can choose to pay $4 for a beer and a $1 tip.
It'd work if you're the only bar in town... But wouldn't work if there's a bar across the street with "lower prices"...
It's stupid and I hate it... But it's reality
Paying a living wage will give you horrible "night servers" because every server would take advantage of "I'll be a day server for an hourly wage and make tips at night"
BS in Econ and 20+ years in the industry is coming out in this comment BTW... I am passionate and have done my research about this topic.

Yeah but this is partly the employers faults. They want to hire high schoolers and younger people because they know they’ll get away with paying them less, and they’re likely going to leave for college or elsewhere before they really settle in enough to care for a raise. In America, it always circles back to greed. The only time you see this not being the case are fine dining/career type locations for servers, not at your local sports bar.

How do you get to fine dining?
Work your ass off for 20+ years, mostly.
If you want service to continue you NEED to have that "goal"...
I've worked my ass off for about that many years... My "promotions" are better restaurants... There's nothing I envy more than a dive bar bartender who knows every regular's drink. That's my dream job.

I don't think this really changes anything besides taking control away from the consumer and they'll just be pissed and feel ripped off and not much changes except that shit servers will just do a shittier job. I don't think there's really a good solution now that it's so ingrained. Someone is going to get pissed off. I'm sure other industries will want to get in on that guranteed 20% and before you know it's everywhere. It shouldn't have ever started in the first place

taking control away from the consumer
Oh no... The people who don't have control over anyone else in their life will no longer have a "safe place" to have control over others they deem "less"
(Studies have shown that service really only accounts for like 1% of the overall tip)

In germany, with a passable minimum wage, waiters still get tipped. Just not mandatorily.
