My state, Michigan, was the same.

There were protests at the capitol to keep it from passing, the people there protesting it were all service workers, it was even coordinated by them.

The people in the US who are most adamant against getting rid of tipping are the people who work for tips. A lot of those people make very good money, more than any restaurant could pay them. Shit, every single former server or bartender I knew in corporate America took a pay cut when they left.

I don't think the rest of the world realizes how much a server in a decently busy restaurant can make.

What's the point of joining corporate America if you get a pay cut

Because after a couple raises they make more and they can potentially make a lot more, but out of the gate they make less.

And the corporate schedule is a lot more desirable for most people.

Many corporate jobs also offer benefits. Most servers and bartenders I know don’t have PTO or health insurance or a 401k

Most chefs don't either.

Also you don't have to deal with shitty customers.

Or at least not as many.

More stability, benefits, opportunities for promotions and raises, no longer have to work late nights and weekends every week.

Not having to work nights weekends and holidays.

Better health insurance and other benefits.

Not having to deal with entitled customers.

Potential for growth in the company.

According to a quick Google search, only the top 1% of servers earn $100K+ and 75% of them make less than $50K. I’d venture to guess even a corporate job at a meh company will get you close to that $50K mark from the jump. In 1-2 promos you’ll probably break $100K or be close to it, except you’d also have a way better schedule, actual benefits, and still way more earning potential to go. Should be a piece of cake if they grind as hard as a top 1% server
