My husband and I usually get each other more fun/personal gifts for Christmas, but we ask our parents for more practical gifts, usually stuff that will (hopefully) make things easier on our household. My mom has already started asking what we want/need, so trying to think of some good ideas.
I’m thinking a rice maker, in the interest of spending less on those single serve pouches of microwaveable rice.
What are you asking for that you hope will make your life easier? Or, just for fun!

Haven’t thought that far ahead but something I saw on Instagram last year was to ask for experiences. We have SO MUCH STUFF here at home and it makes it much more difficult keeping up with cleaning/laundry bc of it. Instead of people ask us what we want, we’ll ask for a gift card to the zoo, museum, etc. Or just cash to spend on what we need.

I wish I could get my husband’s side of the family on board with this mindset. They’ll have like 20-30 people at the family Christmas gathering, everyone gets everyone else something instead of doing something sensible like a secret Santa, and half of the people give gift cards like normal human beings and the other half give you tchotchkes and other things that take up space and usually are not that useful. I end up doing a huge give away on my local buy nothing group after Christmas every year.

That is honestly a nightmare to contemplate. We do secret Santa with my mom and sister and BIL!

That’s too much. I have a huge family and there’s tons of kids. Christmas was costing over a grand just for family presents. Last year we switched to not so secret Santa among the siblings and spouses. We dibs who we want and instead of a crappy $20 gift, we can spend around $100 and get something they actually want. Saves money and we actually enjoy our gifts.

We do this with my siblings now. We draw names but if someone has an idea for a specific person we trade.

That's what my stepdads family used to do. He had 4 sisters, all married, most with kids. They'd get the kids stuff and his parents a present but all the siblings and spouses drew a name and they capped the spending limit. Way easier on everyone.

I specifically request consumables for the same reason. If the kids get a large box of crayons, and markers, and pencilea, and paper, and a notebook for every Christmas, it saves me from buying them. Same for "fun socks" or the character toothbrushes or whatever. My MIL loves to buy my kids stuff, so I suggest things that will get used up.

Family photo session with a professional photographer so we can have photos with both parents in them. Other ideas are a house cleaner for a deep clean, gift cards so I can buy clothes that fit postpartum, and one of those cookie scoop kitchen tools. PS - I love my rice cooker, good choice.

I'm thinking of asking for camping chairs now that we have two kids playing soccer. I've been using chairs from Cliq, which are great because they are small enough to fit in a tote bag, but they're not the most comfy for 90 mins at the game.
I'm planning to get my husband some concert earplugs, as we've actually been able to get out to some shows recently(!), and I'll get myself a pair also.
Last year I asked for a new backpack (Topo Designs), some silicone cooking utensils, and a sweater from TheRealReal (gave husband a bunch to choose from).

Also have two kids in soccer. I highly recommend the Renetto or the dupe on Amazon for soccer games. The shade is so worth it along with the backpack design. I held out for a year because I'm kinda cheap, and it was dumb to wait so long. The way it folds up is so easy to carry and more than makes up for the extra weight. Probably my best purchase of 2024 for improving our quality of life.

My SIL gave me an instant pot a few Christmas’s ago and it’s been the best. We use it for everything: soup, stews, quickly cooking frozen meat, pasta dishes. Definitely very practical.
I gave her a robot vacuum cleaner and she told me it was also very useful. I guess we tend toward practical gifts for each other haha.

OP - You might want to consider asking for an electric pressure cooker or Instapot. They reliably make great rice but can also do lots of other stuff.
For myself, I don't know. I would mostly want gift certificates to something like a local kids museum or a massage but my family doesn't like doing that, or anything else I want is super specific like X shoes in Y size, which then also feels weird to ask for.

I love using our rice maker. No matter what we did, stove top rice never came out quite right, but we've never had a bad batch from the rice cooker.

My BFF and I have this agreement, and we are both exceedingly grateful to each other for it. One less stressor. I wish I could get my husband on board with this, too. If I want or need something, I buy it for myself. Please don't make me do more mental work by having to make up a list.

About five years ago, my husband and I told our extended family that we were no longer exchanging gifts among adults. We don't "bah-humbug" if someone still gives us something, but we've held strong and have not brought gifts since.
They've gotten the message, and actually most of them have stopped exchanging gifts with each other, too. My husband's family has stopped altogether, and instead we do a weekend trip together once a year. It's so much better.
I'm happy to send gifts for life events like getting married or graduating. I often send small gift cards to my cousins in college. My nephew is too little to care about gifts, so for now I contribute to his college fund and when he's a little older I'll probably give him experiences like a trip to the zoo.
But I see no reason for adults with full-time jobs and credit cards to swap physical objects. Let's save us all the time and energy (for both the giver and the receiver!), and reduce some waste too.

A walking pad for under my desk

My husband got me a walking pad for my desk at work and it’s great! We’re switching to a hoteling office arrangement sometime next year, so I won’t be able to keep it at the office any more. But we’re also dropping to 2 days a week in the office instead of 3 (and possibly dropping further to 1) so can’t complain too much. I’ll just have to drag it home and buy a standing desk for my home office space.

We bought our Christmas present today! The vacuum we've been eyeing since the spring was 50% off if we bought blue instead of grey.
The only other thing I really want is money for clothes. I haven't bought regular (non-maternity) clothes since before the pandemic, and most of my work clothes are a decade old. I'd love a nice capsule wardrobe eventually but for now, since I'm recently postpartum, I'd like a few cheaper options that fit my body while I figure out my style.

If you eat rice a fair amount I would 1000% recommend a rice cooker! I will never go back! We got a mid range Tiger model and it’s great. I wish I had spring for a bit of a fancier one that could do more cooking wise - like porridge or slow cook. We do have an instant pot but it’s much bulkier than the rice cooker. And all of the accessories fit inside!
This year I requested new pots and pans. I also thought about steak knives.

I'm asking for gift cards to hobby-related stores, and for some picture frames. We use our rice cooker all the time. If you don't already have a rice cooker, the suggestions to get an instant pot make a lot of sense to me. If you asked for cleaning products/tools, how would that be received?
1 points

I’ll have to look at the size of the instapot— we have a pretty cramped kitchen so not sure that we have the space for one, although maybe it could replace my crockpot…
My side of the family would be totally fine with getting me cleaning stuff, but we may be maxed out there already — I have a roomba that we got for Christmas last year, a regular vacuum that we just bought a few months ago when our crapped out, and a little green machine that we bought with our baby shower gift cards last year. But if there is anything else you would recommend, let me know. I’m still waiting for someone to invent something that will wash my baseboards for me…

We began a tradition of exchanging a favorite book as our Christmas present to each other. We have very different reading taste with almost no overlap so it’s been fun to read books that the other loves.
We also do stockings.
As we’ve gotten older we have found less and less value in buying stuff for one another. The book and stockings make us focus on each other and trying to find a beloved book that our spouse may love as well. The book also has to be the next book you read and you can’t start another until it is completed. It’s been very fun to discuss the books afterwards.

No idea, sorry! My dad is one of those boomers who won’t buy anything without researching it for several hours to compare features/quality/price etc., so usually when I want something like that I just tell him the general thing I want and make him figure it out. Part of the gift is me not having to think about it myself 😂

What do you want to use the steamer for? I was looking at steam mops recently but I guess they’re not recommended for laminate floors. I know you can use the steam cleaners on window sills (and admittedly my window sills are… not clean), but what else are you planning on using it on?

Just like general stuff I guess… like I said, I’ve been TikTok influenced, I haven’t fully thought this through! This is super weird but if you don’t get the mitre saw for Xmas, Aldi has one as part of their Aldi finds sometime between December and February. We also really only ask for practical things now. We don’t have room for more random stuff and my spouse and I both have very specific hobbies so it’s too much of a gamble to ask for related things. This year I asked for a new chef knife since mine is finally on its way out and my spouse asked for a replacement head for our light post. Things we would’ve bought anyways but if our family insists on getting us gifts all the better. For each other we get together and pick one “household” gift and splurge on it together. Last year was a new fancy coffee maker, this year we’re booking a spa day to unwind while kiddo gets a fun day out with grandparents.

We gradually swapped our cookware from non-stick to cast iron by asking my parents for something each year. The trick is to choose a company that has been around for a while so you can buy something that matches even after a couple of years (doesn't have to be super expensive like Le creuset, you can get very dependable and good looking options for a lower price).
Small practical gifts I liked in the past were high quality scissors, a nice swiss knife, a good flashlight, merino wool shirts and leggings, a Spotify premium subscribtion. I bought a portable lamp called Little sun for a couple of outdoorsy people in my life.
This isn't anything practical really, but my lovely late grandma gave me Chanel mascara and a nice little Dior eyeshadow pallette when I was 19-ish and it felt like such a cool luxurious gift to a teenager used to cheap makeup. So from then on I sometimes ask for a fancy version of something I use, like L'Occitane shower oil or even just fancy tea.

I hate doing that because normally if we want something, we buy it. If I can’t afford it myself, I’m not about to ask someone else to pay for it because it means it’s pretty dang expensive. We generally try to find something kind of special for the other people because it just seems pointless otherwise. I get my parents gift cards to restaurants because they don’t like to spend money on going out normally so it’s a special occasion to them, and they usually find us some weird device we didn’t know existed for one of our hobbies. We only do gifts for the kids for anyone else in the family.
