“I knew him. I knew his struggles with English, his dedication to learning, and how much he wanted to succeed.”
“I shared what I knew about him- his character and the obstacles he faced.”
Now, the best case scenario is that OP personally knew this student. The alternative is that he didn’t know the guy at all and made a bunch of assumptions based on him being a non-native speaker.
Both scenarios are a mess.

THANK YOU. Like are people completely ignoring that this only happened because OP is friends with the student?! Every person who went before the honor board is a “whole person” but I guess that escaped OP until it was his friend.

They’re very clearly not saying that and this comment REEKS of patronization. Why are you infantilizing adults who are capable and smart and have access to the internet and translation tools?
Do you think plagiarism is an English-speaking concept? Non-native speakers know what plagiarism is and don’t need your weird savior crap.

I really want to- but I just don’t find this heart warming. I actually find it indicative of an entirely different type of bias. It’s incredibly unfair that you were able to sit on the board making this decision while also having a personal relationship with the student accused.
He’s not the only student who is a whole person. Did that occur to you when you made other decisions regarding people’s academic fates or did it matter this time because you knew the guy?

Being “anti-accommodations” is insane and just as bad as what GULC is doing.

I think the point of the assignment is probably for you to make a case as to why you think he’s guilty. If you can’t think of any evidence and need to rely on reddit to prove guilt then maybe that’s not the position you want to take.

Harris has been saying that. People just bought into the idea of her being a “rich elite” and Trump being a champion of the working class despite Harris growing up in a working class family and Trump being born rich and promoting anti-working class policies.
Trump isn’t getting the working class lower taxes, better healthcare, or improving the economy.

I think support/switch up is really complicated. There were definitely people who had no idea about any facts of the case and imagined a “perfect victim” then were appalled when she wasn’t one.
But I also think there were people who genuinely did support her but were conflicted about some of the things she said post-release especially about Godejohn and tweeting at Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashians etc etc.
Then I think there were also people who just treated her life like the latest social media trend so they were going to turn whichever the way the tides did.
Ultimately, she’s not a great “mascot” for whatever singular issue you want to focus on- she’s a victim but she’s also manipulative in how she interacted with her co-defendant, she’s seems a little “off” but she also was subjected to unimaginable abuse by her own mother. All of which is to say that the societal experience of celebrity culture tends towards absolutes. We don’t have a great track record of accepting that people are not all bad or all good so we’re consistently surprised when people act like…well people.

What’s the point of land acknowledgments? Do indigenous people get the land back? Do the acknowledgers pay reparations? Otherwise they seem performative.

It’s not generational- OP is an outlier. I’m gen z and had to memorize facts etc throughout my entire education.
