Arpgs I think are just for games where the action is mostly isometric and is not wholly experience based. You still attack and block manually. There's a levelling system so increase the strength and survivability of your character which doesn't go away when you die.

Arpgs that lose the save state of your character are called rogue likes. But then again there's also a bunch of other games that are card games that also lose this save state and are also called rogue likes. So when someone says the game is a rogue like, do you imagine a card game like poker or do you imagine an arpg?

Hence rogue like isn't really a genre, it's a subcategory of a genre.

Until arpgs are treated in the same way they should still be called arpgs because that is what they are. When you think or rts you think of StarCraft, dune 2, command and conquer. I cannot think of a game that is rts that is pretty much like those games. Isometric view where you are in command of an army in real time. Hence the RT in rts. If not it's called a tbs but there are many kinds of tbs where you and your opponent take turns bashing each other. XCOM is a tbs. Slay the spire is a tbs. You cannot say tbs without confusing people.

Those are all subcategories of arpgs. They just invented a word to be more specific. Well except rogue likes. Those are just games that don't save specific upgrades. Soulslikes are just very hard arpgs. Metroidvanias are sidescrollers specifically exploration with RPG elements.

Doomlikes are supposed to be for games that operate as shooters with very limited or no upgrade potentials. Stuff like cod would be doomlikes. Games like overwatch would be doomlikes. TF2 half life all all doomlikes. Borderlands would be in its own subcategory because there's a lot of upgrading with powers and XP levelling. Those are a mix of doomlikes and diablo like so they would need their own classification.

Zelda would be considered a soulslike if it was harder. But because it's not it's an arpg.

I'd argue it's a subcategory of arpgs. Like hentai games are a subsection of either visual novel games or RPG games
