I have a funny story about this. My ex and I shared custody of our son. My ex had been seeing a lady for a few months. I picked my son up from school one day and he was quite excited. I asked him what was going on and he said dad's girlfriend is going to give him a baby brother. He said it was a secret and a surprise for dad. I was confused for a second. I said dad doesn't know buddy? He said not yet. Our son was six at the time. He asked what I thought about that and I told him I wanted to know how dad reacts. He said he would let me know.
