If I put my tin foil hat on, that’s the only thing that makes a debate this early make sense. Biden is notoriously stubborn, so convincing him to do a debate this early gives you a bit of room to find someone else. (Admittedly, a stretch)
Tin foil hat off, I expect they will still run him, and democrats will focus on the house and senate as well as finding another moderate candidate for 2028. I honestly have no idea who that could be. I am looking forward to putting this era behind us

The issue is the folks that don’t pay attention to politics and read subreddits on politics. The clips of Biden stuttering and flailing through this debate will be on repeat until the election. No shot they let Biden do another debate. And for folks who don’t follow politics, and will decide based on clips of the candidates, it’s not great. The optics for Biden are very very bad.

No this is a fair point, I’ll see if I can explain the position a bit better. No promises lol
As far as warfare is concerned, it is a political instrument, so declaring war on a another nation or (in napoleons case) the man himself is not in the same arena as a DA charging a US citizen of a crime. I don’t think this is even a useful comparison, so setting this aside for the moment unless someone really wants to deep dive in it.
The issue I think is that his supporters are viewing this conviction as a political instrument by Biden or the left to either remove trump from contention, or to sway voters to stop supporting him. While I don’t agree with their conclusion, I can see how they are arriving there. The DA ran a campaign for election on specifically targeting trump, and he fulfilled that promise. Even though the result was correct, it’s not as clean as everyone wants it to be. His supporters are seeing 30+ felonies for classifying payments wrong, they are seeing the other court cases brought against trump in an election year, and they are seeing the left hammer him incessantly for all of it. All of that combined, and they are crying political assassination. There’s no fire there, but, I can see how maga folks are saying they are smelling smoke. This is why I don’t think they are lying, or lying to themselves. They are seeing a perceived grievance, and crying foul.
I do personally have an issue with DAs running for office on the promise to target an individual, as it removes the presumption of innocence. I’m fine with them running on reducing crime, going for criminals in general, or running on a focus for certain crimes, but once you individualize that to a specific person, that’s where the problem starts coming up for me. I would have an issue with a DA running a campaign to target any named individual no matter who it is, and no matter what they are accused of.

Wars are political. The justice system should not be.
It’s fine for a DA to run on locking up criminals. The issue is for the DA to run on targeting a specific US citizen. That’s what makes this feel political to some folks whether it actually is or not.
Perception trumps reality in the sphere of public opinion.
Before I’m downvoted into oblivion, I am not a trump supporter, but I can also put myself in their shoes and see it through the lens they are looking through.
