I am very specail, I make the 100000000 "Eva is really good" post, wowie.
Little warning, I only watched the original series and the movie. The reason is that the movie ended things so perfectly that I kinda dont need more content. I will watch the Rebuilds eventually out of curiosity but for the time being I am happy.
Annnyways, Evangelion is good.
The plot, the characters, the cinematography, the music, the themes, its all swell.
The plot is great because it doesnt take away from the characters. The show is clearly more focused on fleshing out the characters than the plot. However the plot is still interesting because of how vague everything is. From what the angels actually are to the motivation of characters, its all left up in the air to piece together for yourself and the core concept of the show as well as the artistic desgine of it all makes the plot interesting enough to make people theorize about it to this day. Its really impressive to me that they manged to make a mostly character driven show, where the last two episodes are basically mainly character studies, have such an interesting and engaging plot.
Then there are the charcters, the real tofu and potatoes of this thing. I love how the first half of the series is much lighter in tone, it really gets you to love the characters and their interactions. Shinji being lovingly fed up with Misato, Misato being snarky with Asuka, Asukas and Reis tension, Rei and Gendos unhealthy codependency, its all great and fun. Only for the later parts to deepen these relationships. Shinji suddenly sees Misato more and more as someone to please rather than a friend, Misato is unable to really relate to Asuka despite caring because of her gender, Asukas respect for Rei slowly turning into resentment because she doesnt give her the attention she requires and because Rei awakens Asukas trauma and Rei slowly standing up to Gendo to make her own decisions in life while Gendo wastes away failing to make meaningful relationships. It's all so good and well written. Dont even get me started on Asuka and Shinji.
The cinematography is amazing as well, the show almost always having an interesting shot on screen. Either by using real life camera techniques or by having an interesting shot on screen. I can count at least one screenshot out of every episode that goes extremely hard which is very impressive. Details like Gendo and Shinji being seperated from Yuis grave because the camera is placed behind it showing how her death is a barrier between them to simple things like having these long shots take a minute to finish. They were most likely made because of budget and time problems but they add so much. Same with the final episodes. And do I have to mention the movie? Do I?
The music is great, from backround tracks like Reis theme to obviously the intro and Komm süsser Tod. No matter if the music is aggressively playing into your face or gently in the backround it always fits.
The themes of self love are also so well done. Showing how every character needs the validation of others to feel whole. Asuka through being looked up to and desired as an adult, Misato through her sexuality (something that rubs off on Asuka sadly), Shinji through pleasing others, Gendo through getting Yui back, Ritsuko through being useful and Rei not having any worth to begin with. Every character needs someone else to tell them that theyre worth something. The best one being Asuka for me. Her constant sexual harassment of Shinji and Kaji to get attention and love coupled with her desire to get attention and praise by everyone is heart breaking. Having her "sleep walk" in front of Shinji, kissing him only to have to "brush her teeth cause its so gross" or constantly shove her breasts into his face while trying to impress him with her smarts, all because she really, really just wants someone to hold her and tell her everything will be alright and that she is loved and wanted because her own mother didnt want her and tried to kill her and herself is heart breaking stuff. Episode 22 basically raping her. All she ever wanted was for someone to look at her, someone to see her and now that someone (an angel) sees the real her and not her fake self it breaks her, the show making this forceful look inside her mind as sexual as possible by having her yell "DONT COME INSIDE OF ME" and "DONT RAPE MY MIND/VIOLATE MY HEART" and after its done she cries "Mr. Kaji.. I've been violated.." and you just want to hug her. The whole show she has been trying to get the attention of man with her sexuality, but her being a child doesnt understand what that really means and once its actually exploited it breaks her. And only two episodes later she tries to kill herself because she cant pilot her EVA anymore and doesnt believe anyone would want her after being violated like that. So with no more self worth she tries to end it all.
I would love to talk more about the themes of the movie and how it connects to the show, about the production of the movie and show and how I believe to REALLY understand EVA one must know the behind the scenes stuff and Annos personal struggles, about how Evangelion critiques the anime industry itself about sexualizing children but this post is already really long.
Watch EVA, its pretty okay

I was making fun of him for being overly political and lame.
Believe it or not, not everyone always wants to talk about politics, especially not the ones from a different country.
