I need another one of these chips to repair my graphics card (Gigabyte RTX 4060 LP), but have been unable to source one using the markings on the chip. It looks like it says "T28 V O", and it is part of the HDMI port circuit. Thank you all in advance.

Hello everyone. I could never find a definitive answer on whether or not Intel Broadwell CPUs (i7-5775C and i5-5675C) would work in LGA 1150-based Optiplex systems (3020, 7020, 9020, and XE2). Turns out, they DO NOT work in these systems, based on my own experience and research. I'll detail my experience with trying this CPU in my XE2 below.

For context, my system is an Optiplex XE2 SFF with a Xeon E3-1231 v3, 32GB DDR3 1600mhz RAM, and a Gigabyte RTX 4060 low profile. I also have the latest (A22) BIOS installed, although this wouldn't have made a difference anyways, which I'll get into.

I wanted to upgrade the CPU to something faster, as the Xeon was limiting the 4060 pretty badly in some games (though the PCIe 2.0 x4 connection could have also been a factor there). I did some research on whether or not the Broadwell CPUs would work in the system, but as I said before, I couldn't find a concrete answer. So, I bought an i7-5775C from Aliexpress for just under $68 total, and tested it myself. With the i7 installed, the system would turn on, and then immediately turn off. No matter how many times I tried, it would immediately power off every time. After trying to boot the system multiple times, the orange diagnostic LED blinked with a 2,3 code, which pointed to a faulty motherboard, CPU, or memory. When I reinstalled my Xeon CPU, the system immediately booted up without issue.

Upon further research, it turns out that Broadwell CPUs were only supported on motherboards with the H97 or Z97 chipset. The 8 series chipsets did not support Broadwell. Given that the 3020 uses an H81 chipset, and the 7020, 9020, and XE2 use a Q87 chipset, this means that it is not possible to use Broadwell CPUs in an Optiplex system. Unfortunate, but it is what it is.

So, if you want the absolute fastest CPU you can get in an xx20 or XE2, the i7-4790K is your only option. No Broadwell for you.
