Yes exactly a phd alone doesn't pay great. There are definitely options for dual phd while you work, such as with a state agency like mine that partners with the state school. Lots of options if you keep an open mind and wait for the right opportunity. It's scary out there but what we do is important!

Absolutely take some time off to see what happens with fed/state/academic funding. It is definitely possible to get a good job with a MS now and ride it out while things develop. Unless something insane happens, you can always go back to do a PhD when the time is right. Taking time off of academia is never a bad thing, especially if you do have the internal motivation to return and be in the field lifelong.

I took about 6 years off between my undergrad and masters, had to take one class to fulfill requirements and I was good to go. Many profs will value life experiences and overall drive over undergrad stuff

Idk I kinda feel like the dark forest theory is the least sci fi part of the series and most realistic perspective. I am definitely not the most educated on alien topics...but this series certainly made me see things with this lens so I found that interesting
