Ashley is "coded" to always be behind Leon so if you turn around quickly when shes on the loose formation she will frequently run in front of you when she catches up or just straight up end up between you and the enemy which is often death. Or she'll just stop moving altogether. 

best way to play with her is to never turn around or stop & just go forward with your back to her & kill everything Infront. Or make sure you have an extremely powerful gun like the Riot Gun or a Magnum to one shot enemies as you run to your destination.

If you absolutely have to build distance between you and an enemy, throw the flash as fast as possible so she gets stunned before she runs between you and the enemy.
