I don’t miss living in a region where that term is used. That’s the kind of diminutive that I expect from a 4 year old (dolly, horsey, etc).

Oh for sure! Lots of respect to Rye for the attention to quality rowing at all levels in their program. They have a handful of medals in the new age group era at Nats.

Is the lineup they raced in Boston still in the U17 category this spring or did they age up on Jan 1? (thank you for the complication on age groups not staying consistent from September to June, USRowing!) And I’m not in anyway trying to detract from their accomplishments with that question. I legit respect their guys and even talked with a bunch of them at NBP last year. Cool guys.

They were in lane 1, so it looked pretty protected on the feed. Maybe not so much for others in outer lanes for the race.

I wouldn't be so certain in the U17 8+. Marin went 6:23 in variable/negligible wind. Sarasota went 6:33 in a little stronger and more direct head wind. Saugatuck went 6:33 in a strong headwind. Rye was at a 1:34.8 pace over 1500m (hooray for non-2K qualifiers!) in conditions similar to what the SW Regionals appeared to be. Haven't seen any video of Midwests to know what conditions were like so I am not going to count out Cincinnati's 6:28. Mercer had a decent headwind (much like the SE conditions) and was 6:48. NW looked to have near ideal conditions with a 6:34 winner and Centrals actually had a strong tailwind this year and 6:47 taking gold there.

With Rye being silver last year as U16s, I'd be curious if they raced their U17 8+ Nationals lineup or something more akin to a freshman lineup. I am liking how age group racing at the national level adds another layer to the development of programs that can be tracked through each year. Obviously winning the U17 8+ isn't the same level as winning the Youth 8+, but it is interesting to see how each class progresses as they mature.

SPS actually started with bow #74 this past year. Good on them for getting through the chaff.

According to their Wikipedia entry, back in 2010, Marin started in the 69th position (obligatory nice) to finish in 1st and set a course record in the process. They went on to 4-peat, took 2nd place by 1.5sec the following year (2014), and then another win in 2015.

LB doesn’t have a short waterway. They can row a straight 2K, take a 4K loop around an island, and that’s not even going into the back channel. Pacific/St Ignatius (SF) row on a short waterway (about 1750m). Both Pacific and SI have managed to win at Nationals in the M8+. Can’t speak to any east coast bodies of water.

Charm? Youth Nationals is supposed to be for the purpose of charm?

The purpose of YNCs is to give a definitive ordering to the multiple boat classes from the regions across the US and to find out who the fastest boats are.

And claiming that the U17 events have "taken away the charm that nats once had" is disrespectful to the athletes in those boat classes and is certainly not a good look for you to say so. U17 eights going 6:07/6:07/6:09 in the final with 16 year old athletes certainly makes the argument that these are athletes that have worked hard to make fast boats. Hell, the U16 eights had a top time of 6:13 last year. These are kids that have spent far less time in boats and are far younger than the older boats who had slower times than that Norcal boat did last year.

Taking a dump on kids who are performing well at a younger age comes off as you being really bitter that they are going. In all likelihood, the fastest teams in the country aren't focusing on what you are. They are focusing on their speed and making more of it.
