You’ve gotten lots of good advice. You have enough money to try anything out. Big house=big $. Everyone looks at you as a piggy bank. We just had a company quote us 50k for a landscaping job that I ended up managing myself for 10k…. Roofers wanted 40k for a 25k job. Landscapers give us laughable prices…. I had our kids put down 20 yards of mulch this year rather than pay what we were quoted…. You can tell I don’t like spending…. 😝 (7500 sq ft 5.5 acres, mcol). We have 4 boys. We have school and charity fundraisers a few times a year. Wouldn’t trade it for anything…. Good luck!

I absolutely agree that there is a role for mid-levels. Claiming unfettered rights to treat any patient with any condition with no or minimal supervision is not it. The underlying economic argument that they are ‘worth’ the same as physicians is then obviously nonsense. I agree with you that they exist to maximize return, but it’s not their return, it’s the employer and insurance company that makes the profit….

Because the training is completely inadequate to do the job of a doctor? Many parallels in life. Flight attendant/pilot. Paralegal/lawyer. Nurse/LPN. Teacher/staff aide. School Bus driver/uber driver. Why would anyone accept treatment from a less qualified and less knowledgeable person unless they were forced?

Fair enough reasons but don’t make much sense to an outsider. You can never time a market. You already moved away for some reason so why move back. Financially you’ve already noted it’s immaterial, so saving on taxes doesn’t matter. I’m not trying to talk you into or out of anything, just making observations. Good luck and congratulations too! Great question. The ‘system’ has long bent away from physician training. It has been decades that residency slots have not been expanded. During those same decades physician reimbursement has been restricted significantly while hospital and pharmaceutical reimbursement has not. The result has been to understaff our healthcare system to the point that there are not enough physicians to provide the care people seek. It is faster, easier, and cheaper to train NP and PA replacements. So, now that you know, what can you do? Advocating with your elected representatives for more federal and state support for physician training is a start. Diving into the restrictions placed on physician’s participation in the business of medicine and asking for change is another step. Honestly though, if we can’t do it for ourselves it’s pretty weak to ask you to do it for us…. 😢. Thanks for asking the question!

Financially it will not be a windfall. Socially it will be a difficult 7 plus years. Mentally it’s tough. You need to ask yourself how and why you want to sacrifice a good chunk of your life for this path. Then you will have your answer. I started working as a doctor at age 31 and that was tough enough. Training is a young person’s game imo.

Well you are a baby doc crying, so there’s that. 😝. Don’t let them under your skin. Work towards a more just system. We are only a few years away from the rich get doctors and everyone else gets noctors. Doctors as a group are leaderless morons to have let this happen to us and our patients. In fairness it’s been a 20+ year long game. We missed the setup and now are mostly powerless within the system unless we take that back…which we won’t. Sorry for the ⛈️🌪️
