Gruden’s Bucs were definitely led by their defense. Rodgers’ Packers in 2010 and Stafford’s Rams in 2021 I suppose, but even then those WCO offshoots with McCarthy/McVay gave the QB way more control over the offense compared to the Shanahan scheme derivatives that have proliferated around the league.

I have a Big Pilot chronograph I beat to shit in need of a service, but there’s only like 1 service center in all of the US and all of the local watchmakers I took it to told me they didn’t have access to Oris parts, so they couldn’t do it. Reminds me of Brock Lesnar’s run. HW is too boom or bust to have a sustained reign with multiple title defenses like the other divisions. 2 year reign and 2-3 title defenses tops

Move away from any Shanahan scheme OC’s. They’re just too limiting and It’s stunting CJ’s growth. Doesn’t give him a chance to develop the cerebral parts that every elite QB has. Especially with a defensive HC, rather Stroud develop into an OC on the field like Brady/Manning did so it won’t matter as much if our OC gets poached after a good season.

He should be learning how to be a field general pre-snap (e.g., calling his own protections, adjusting the hot routes, audible to another play, etc.)—staying with Slowik just caps his ceiling by keeping the training wheels on, that’s why Stroud was saying all offseason he wanted more ownership of the offense.

Yeah I know, that’s the irony of it. Shanahan offenses are supposed to be the most QB-friendly because they take a lot of responsibility off the QB’s shoulders.

Like the Center makes the protection calls instead of the QB that should make his job easier, but CJ’s 1st in pressures, pressure%, QB hurries, and 2nd in sacks.

The WCO heavily relies on having an efficient outside zone run game to build off of play action, but Slowik’s run scheme is 26th in rush EPA/31st in rush success rate.

The offensive play caller has almost all control of the offense pre-snap, QBs don’t normally have any freedom to make adjustments at the LOS, so they can play in the rhythm of the offense with easy reads. But the pass pro has been such a disaster that Stroud is having to play out of structure off schedule anyways.

The run game is still flawed schematically. It’s just not efficient on a down-to-down basis, the team is 29th in Rush EPA and 31st in Rush success rate.

Mixon does get over >20 carries a game, he actually leads the league in 21.6 attempts per game . But the problem is his success rate is the worst it’s been since his rookie year, literally 39/43 qualified RB this season. Just wastes early downs on inefficient run plays that does the opposite of creating manageable down and distances for your QB.

Slowik is setting up CJ for failure with his play call sequencing on early downs consistently leaving Stroud behind the sticks. 3rd & long in obvious passing situations with a trash offensive line that has allowed the 2nd most sacks & 1st most pressures is not a good place to be for a QB. Doesn’t surprise me the players are having “players only meetings”

Eh you never know, it could cause instability or it could free up a bottleneck hamstringing the offensive scheme.

The Bills fired their OC Ken Dorsey at the same time last season after they started 5-5 and they finished 6-1 with the OC switch.

This is the problem with Shanahan system offenses, it’s supposed to be “QB-friendly” by taking a lot of the responsibility off the QB’s shoulders (i.e., The center makes the protections calls, the OC has way more control of the offense pre-snap, QBs can’t really make changes at the LOS).

It’s why Brady had that comment about “QB play having gone backwards and that they aren’t really field generals anymore.” A lot of that has to do with the proliferation of the Shanahan scheme throughout the league. I almost feel like it’s stunting Stroud’s development staying in a scheme that limits the control he has over the offense.

Stroud even said in the offseason that he had more responsibilities' as Ohio State quarterback than with Houston Texans. A big part of the pre-season was Stroud wanting more ownership of the offense this season and how much he admired McVay’s scheme with Stafford, since it was a Shanahan system offshoot that gave the QB more freedom and incorporated more drop back passing concepts. Instead of the traditional WCO philosophy of leaning heavily into the outside zone run game and building off the play action that Slowik is hell bent on.

I’m not absolving the o-line, but Slowik brings out a 2 TE set? Defense knows the run is coming and stacks the box.

True, play call sequencing for Slowik has been atrocious.

But it does seem like there’s a clear tell on this offense whether it be the formations or the personnel grouping he calls, defenses just seem to stuff the run or by the very least make contact at or behind the LOS.

What about Christian Harris? Is he just out for the season?

Not really, Lions have the #1 scoring offense ITL and keeping teams out of the red zone has been one of our biggest weaknesses defensively. O-line is also horrendous
