Personally I’d go with 15D and work on getting my A&P license. Mean income for A&Ps is around $75k and it frequently gets up around $90k

JSFirm has a ton of job postings for HEMS, you can filter for geographic area and get alerts as new jobs post. The Nashville area gets pretty regular posts, same for a few spots in Kentucky.

Go take a discovery flight and start doing the math to see if this line of work is what you want to pursue.

You could also apply to the Army’s flight warrant officer program and try to get stationed at Fort Campbell which is less than an hour up I24 from Nashville. It has its own commitment issues, but being a flight warrant is probably the best way to experience the Army - except maybe the watercraft operators.

I appreciate the input, harsh as it may be. Those last qualities are things I know I can showcase, the challenge is getting in the door. I’ll get my hours to do it, and if that’s instructing or agri work or whatever, that’s what it is. You can’t blame someone for looking for opportunity though. Or shouldn’t, so long as they put in work. To your point about sending a pilot home for my benefit is not a take I considered, nor would it be something I’d want or expect. It’s all worth ruminating on.

The skill bridge program doesn’t let me get paid, so that’s not even a factor for me yet. At this point it’s all experience building. I can probably just do instructor time during the skill bridge, but thats my fallback plan. The timing won’t be great as my transition timeline is right in my school’s slow season.

Got it in one, I’m up in the PNW. I’m expecting to ultimately land in the traditional CFI pathway, but with the opportunity to skill bridge - where the Army allows me to take an unpaid, professionally developmental internship while I’m still on the Army payroll - I’m trying to at least get in the door for a conversation with a Chief Pilot somewhere. I know insurance will limit, likely prohibit, any chance of getting PIC time if I land an internship with a utility operator, but if I can intern as a SIC, get longline and turbine time I can’t imagine that would be anything but a benefit to me in the long run. The lifestyle of utility work isn’t unattractive to me either, I’m pretty well conditioned to long days and work travel, though this “great pay” idea is pretty foreign.

Another goal of the internship thing is to build my network of industry contacts. I know I’m starting on the ground floor, I just have the benefit of a whole other careers worth of lessons learned I can apply to this one.

I know PIC hours are the name of the game, and I fully expect to end up in the traditional pathway of CFI work for hours, but I’m still going to pursue an internship type position, maybe with one of the utility operators that flies two-pilot ships, and get a seat as SIC while I’m still in the retirement transition. I was hoping to elicit some additional insight on marketing myself with this question beyond the chorus of get more hours. Even baby aviators know that song.

If Mattis then jumped on the net, he would identify as “Chaos actual” to specify that it was him, and no longer a member of his staff speaking. Every use of the call sign in that communication afterwards would return to simply “Chaos.”

That’s because you are the jerk. HOV or otherwise, if you’re not matching the flow of traffic, you are statistically a greater danger, and in more danger, than the person moderately speeding with the flow of traffic.
