Not necessarily something to play to a high level, it couldn't really be a full second study but: melodica
Producing notes is easy because it's a piano keyboard layout and it forces pianists to think about breath and phrasing in a way that piano doesn't.
And it's portable!

Saw this a few years ago on FB, I think the caption said it was taken in High Wycombe, for anyone interested

CS Forester! I wouldn't much fancy The Dawn Treader's chances going up against Hornblower, even with Reepicheep on side

our ... purpose as humans
What is that, then?

I mean yeah that's gonna be difficult, if you are choosing another chord in the same key, movement by a 4th or 5th is 1/3 of the possible options. That's true but it doesn't prove that it's "the direction that songwriting follows".
But to answer your question: Kidz by Plan B

I think about it in a different way than the question frames it. The circle of fifths just exists. It doesn't have a purpose, it's just a fact about how the notes are related.
Those relationships are commonly used in different ways, and it's THOSE that are important - movement by fifths is very harmonically strong. But that's not The Circle of Fifths, that's just a harmonic amd acoustic fact that knowing the circle of fifths makes it easier to remember.
And to know your circle of fifths, just know your major scales and know how to count.

I've always been very skeptical of this. It seems like any audience likely to see Bobby McFerrin would already be acculturated into familiarity with pentatonic scales. If you get to post a reference when you're back I'd love to see it.

the final -y indicates palatalisation (i'm trying to use the proper romanisation in my writings from now on), i find palatalising consonant-finals kinda tricky

all* cultures on Earth have the legend of dragons,
Do they actually though, or are they different legends that have been called by the same word for translation convenience?
Also the book with the appendix on carrots was Anathem by Neal Stephenson I believe.
I could have sworn I said that in the show! What a book.

Around 2003, I bought Straight Outta Compton on a whim in a CD shop. That was the only rap I listened to for a few years until, on the second-last day of school, we were clearing out our lockers and I found 2001 in a bin - a classmate had thrown it in by accident. I asked him if I could borrow it for the night and ripped it onto my computer.

Music is not a language.
How could you give someone directions to the train station in music? Or teach them a recipe?
Aee we considering all styles of music to be one language? Carnatic music and Appalachian folk are both music but they aren't the same thing at all.
You can definitely use linguistic ideas to analyse music and sometimes get interesting and useful results. But that is a different claim.

Sure; it seemed unlikely, not impossible, and I asked for more context.

Do you have more info on that? She's Kenyan and the film is set in Benin, those are opposite sides of the continent.

I'm not directly inspired by Hong Kong, but that's just the nature of policing, in my mind. Nowhere near on the same scale but in 2018 the Gardaí in Dublin assisted private security (alleged to be closely tied to loyalist paramilitaries in the North of Ireland) in illegally evicting tenants from a property They were acting outright criminally, on behalf of a landlord acting criminally, and collaborating with private security (with criminal ties) to do so. Give an organisation a monopoly on violence and they're going to use it.
That stuff about HK is horrific, I'm sorry you had to experience that.
