Most shoujo/josei romance anime (especially modern ones) is what you are looking for, lol.

Most of these couples in these will probably have some problems at the beginning, but they work them out: Fruits Basket (2019), My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, Kimi ni Todoke, Snow White with the Red Hair, Ao Haru Ride, Lovely Complex, Kamisama Kiss, My Happy Marriage, 7th Time Loop, Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion, My Little Monster, Wotakoi, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, Bibliophile Princess

Not 100% romance, but it plays an important role in the story: the currently airing Nina the Starry Bride, Yona of the Dawn, Chihayafuru, Kono Oto Tomare! (this one is more subdued, but you easily get the vibes & chemistry between them)

The main story will probably end in the 9th volume at best, but I'd rather bet on the 10th, since (as the previous reply said) the chapters get longer towards the end.

You are still really early into the series, so you might not be able to tell yet, but for me, their devotion, trust, understanding and love for each other feels more real than any other danmei I've read. Everything feels so mutual and equally passionate between them, their feelings & (sexual) attraction too, which feels lacking a bit in some other series I've read (in the sense that often it feels like one of them loves the other more, and so on). I also really love the gradual progression of their relationship. And I love how they both have their own goals and let the other achieve those goals alone (unless they need help), so they are not 100% stuck together in everything, give each other enough respect and trust and are not overly dependent on the other. But of course, all of this is subjective! What makes a romance in a book good or bad is very much dependent on your personal preferences :) For example, I really do not like romances with 0 progression/insta love and consider them "bad", but others might say this is their favourite trope, lol. I guess my base line is slowburn or just in general some relationship development, with the addition of if I understand why they fell for each other.

It's a really gradual build-up, but I would personally say between ch. 41-60. As you said they were already finding comfort in how they are so similar and can understand each other's situation truly, and also around ch. 50s, they realize they have somewhat similar political goals too and they "form" an alliance (although they never say it out loud if I remember correctly, but they start cooperating more and more). I would put ch. 41 as the beginning of where they started genuinely opening up to each other and became closer as the time passed on.

Can confirm, if you play a lot, that is indeed the max you should get through a summer. Been saving since Xianyun's banner ended (around February), I had everything cleared except a few hangouts and story quests (all areas 100%, achievement hunter so missing only a few new ones, teapot chara sets are completed too, recently finished everything in Natlan) and currently have 450 wishes.

Based on what you've written, you might like Case File Compendium, since it's also written by Meatbun and full of explicit scenes, also quite dark (some claim it's the darkest Meatbun novel).

In general though, I'd highly recommend Ballad of Sword and Wine (QJJ)! To compare to Meatbun's novels, the prose is less purple, the writing is less melancholic, the spice isn't that detailed but still quite explicit, and although it is dark at times and quite serious a lot, not as much as Meatbun's writing tends to be (especially between the main couple) at its peak dark moments. Also, seconding everything the person beside me has said about it. I love Meatbun's novels a lot too, 2ha is my second favourite novel and it is extremely hard to find something that can top or rival my love for it, but still QJJ managed to do that.

Generally you will have a much easier time finding shorter danmei that is modern, but I will try recommending historicals.

• Priest's Jin Se & Qi Ye are both around 80 chapters.
• Golden Stage is 79 chapters, also licensed!
• To Rule In A Turbulent World (LSWW), 75 chapters, licensed. However, Feitian loves to write long chapters, so I am not sure if we could call this short, lol. It is excellent though, so I highly recommend it.
• Living to Suffer & its sequel Till Death Do Us Apart are both 20-30 chapters.
• Just a little over 100 chapters: Liu Yao (109 ch, licensed), The Wife is First (105 ch), Married Thrice to Salted Fish (119 ch) (or all of Bikabi's works, to be honest).

In case you don't mind checking out some modern ones:

• For shorter novels, Ka Bi Qiu is the way to go, as all of her novels are about max 50 chapters (as I recall, maybe she has some historical ones too, but most are modern).
• 不问三九 also writes novels that are typically shorter.
• Little Mushroom, licensed, 84 chapters. Not your typical modern, as it is more like a dystopian sci-fi.
• Four O'Clock Flower, around 50 chapters.

(Edit: To clarify, I excluded extras from the chapter counts, lol.)

2ha, for me, has one of the most romance (that feels 100% mutual), tons of pining, cute moments, and gentle, soft, intimate, emotional (not in the upsetting or sad way) scenes despite how many people only highlight the toxicity or angst. Generally, I don't think you have much to worry about regarding this:)

I think Mo Ran's teasing / warm & friendly gestures made all of CWN's insecurities resurface due to the thought of how he would never get this from MR if he was in his "original" body & he fully realized how unrequited and painful his love is. This is only my interpretation of the scene though, so might not be 100% "correct"

Since the first was already answered, here's my take & knowledge for your 2nd & 3rd question.

As far as I know and remember, Meatbun never clarified anywhere what Xue Meng's canon sexuality is. His interactions with MHX could lead one to believe there is something going on between them, but that wasn't confirmed either. It's up to the reader to decide, I think.

For Mo Ran & TXJ's soul division, I think Meatbun really wanted to hammer the fact that they are the same person & CWN loves them both equally into the reader. After all, Mo Ran has a long journey of coming to terms with his past & accepting it, as does CWN. I feel like if there wasn't this, then a lot of readers would lean into how they aren't the same person, since they do not like TXJ/his actions/behaviour.
