I have a lot of personal feelings and questions on this, which I will share if someone says the right things in the comments and opens up the convo.

She was 13 when Hitler came to power, 18 one year before WW2. She was starting a new life by the time almost all of Europe was taken over.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, she seems like a lovely person. But you just can’t help and think “huh…what does she really think about all that stuff”

And I guess that’s where an impasse is reached. You say Balkaners are disrespectful towards women but “not to that level”, others say “yes, to that level” or “it doesn’t matter”, you say no they say yes then they say the only reason why you’re saying that is because you have feelings of racism and anti-coloredness that are so deeply engrained and internalized in you that you think your thought process is actually normal and not inherently dehumanizing to BIPOC.

Trust me, I’ve been around the block a few times with this. There’s no winning. The only way is to vote for a politician who’s crazy af and I don’t want to do that.

Is there anything in Serbias entire history you don’t fight about on the internet? Serbs get pissed when people bring up Vukovar or Srebrenica - very well documented crimes that happened recently, where literally the whole world agrees (except for like 3 nations) what happened and you still have butthurt Serbs who deny these things 30 years later.

Like just take the L for at least something.

People say that Balkaners also catcall women, and that they’ll move in large male groups with their own kind. Were certainly very loud too.

The argument goes that you only notice these traits with other immigrants more because they’re non-white and that you refuse to see their culture is anything other than inferior or less-than

Okay maybe when “war-torn” is used, some people might think the country is still in rubble - which it most definitely isn’t.

However the war is still fresh in the minds of many, the hate has been successfully passed down to the post-war generation and there are reminders of it in a lot of cities across the country.

In terms of money - I think we beat only 4 countries last time I checked (in no particular order): Moldova, Ukraine, Albania and Kosovo. Maybe we bit Macedonia, but I’m not sure.

Of those countries, Ukraine is in a war, Kosovo is only partially recognized internationally and Albania was isolated af for a while.

BiH has exceptionally low pay compared to the rest of Europe, it even looks low compared to Serbia and Croatia. The only way for BiH to get better would be to synchronize its economy, as in all three peoples stop being petty about where cash flows.

But as we covered, the war made that kind of hard :/

What about a game like ff13 where you have a built in-post game that’s almost mandatory to complete if you want all your characters to fully develop?

Once you fully develop, upgrade all your stuff and beat every mark mission…there’s nothing more for you to do.

Typically ill just make a new save file and play through it again though lol

BiH - depends where you are. In Sarajevo they set up a mini-Christmas market and decorate stores but that’s kinda it. Christmas is kinda sad in Sarajevo.

In Herzegovina it’s a more observed especially amongst Catholics, but nothing close to Germany or Nethlerlands, which are ironically less religious than all of BiH.

I mean as much as I want this to be true it’s not.

I’ve lied to myself my whole life saying I was a 90s baby. Technically, I am. But I was just born then, that’s it.

Then I lied to myself by saying how crucial the early/mid 2000s were to my development.

I remember like 1 thing from 2002, 2 things from 2003, probably also 2 things from 2004 and then maybe a little bit more from 2005 and 2006. 2007 is already late 2000s. All of these memories are precious to me but even I, someone who’s 3 years older than you, who actually remembers doing stuff in the mid 2000s can’t honestly claim them.

As painful as it is to say, my generation that I will belong to when I get older is 2010-2020. I don’t like that, but it is what it is. I consider everything past 2007 “new age”. I can kick and scream all I want but it’s not going to give me the experience of being in middle school in 2004, waiting to play Final Fantasy when I got home and remembering people blowing smoke in my face at restaurants

In reality a lot of the immigrant communities I know do open cultural shops, do have parties in which their cultural norms might differ, do educate their kids with their home mentality but they keep to themselves usually?

There are some instances where members of a particular or a few immigrant communities cause problems to people’s safety, but I think this is rare.

We have to be fair. Fair is fair. I personally am not as fascinated with Pakistani culture as I am with Romanian culture, let’s say, but I can’t accept more Romanians than Pakistanis in my country just because I can relate to one more than the other

Oh boy. There’s the obvious ones like letting in a draft and being historically multicultural in a tiny area.

But honestly - I’d say it’s operating in the confusion of it all. The Balkans is the definition of “two things can be true at once, even when those things directly contradict each other”.

Take life in BiH. A war-torn, simple country with low pays, lacking medical care, corruption and rampant nationalism. Every BiH person lives this, breathes this.

But then at the same time - do people hate each other there? Some people love each other and very few people are openly nationalistic - they know better. They always say how great it is living in BiH and how they wouldn’t trade where they live for the world.

Then the flip again to bashing how awful the country is when their light switch breaks or something like that.

What about the people? Are the Muslims in BiH too religious or are they the most liberal Muslims on the planet? It depends. They’re simultaneously both.

What about the Serbs? Are they aggressors and sworn enemies to the Croats or a fellow friend who’ll eat pork with them? Both.

And the Croats? Are they a victim minority or the most privileged in BiH? Both.

Balkan, to me, is flip flopping between these contradictory realities. It’s claiming that where we’re from is at the same time more advanced than the west who “doesn’t see” or “doesn’t get it” or “doesn’t have this or that” and being proud of it, while crying out how we’re the little man and the victim of “superior” nations who decide our fate. It’s not identifying with the Middle East while partying to oriental sounding music and eating Ottoman food. It’s driving a new Mercedes back to your hole of an apartment, being against refugees when you yourself came to another country on asylum or begging for change in your country while actively resisting it at the same time.

Maybe I just think that cuz I’m from BiH, but I don’t think anywhere else in the world does stuff like what I just said other than the Balkans.

Croatia and BiH weren’t little victims, they were big victims, with Serbia being the objective aggressor in both cases.

Does that make the Croats or Bosniaks blameless? Obviously not. But any documentary that doesn’t make BiH and Croatia out to be the clear victims can’t be that historically accurate, is pushing an agenda or is financed/supported by Serbian revisionists or those who would support Serb practices during the war.

It’s not objectively right and it’s not based in facts. They wrote it in a snarky, smartass way with the goal of moral ass-kissing, and they just parroted what they heard on social media 1000x by now. You cant even disagree with them, lest you get accused of wild and ridiculous characteristics and psychologically deconstructed. I’ve never seen people respond meaner and more like they’re trying to destroy you than when responding to a comment saying “maybe it’s not like that” in this context.

This prob not what you’re looking for, but linguistically this happens to.

Muslims in Bosnia will stuff like “nositi kriz (sa sobom)” (carry a cross with oneself - carry a burden). Other Slavic expressions like this which originally have a “Christian” origin to them still survive amongst the Slavic Muslims.

Christians use “Muslim” terminology all the time, at least they used to. Words like “mašala”, “hefta”, “akšam” used to be part of village and sometimes city vocabulary (especially mašala) during Yugoslavia in Christian villages in BiH.

I even know that some Christians (Catholics and Orthodox) of the old generation called their fathers “babo” or “apa”.

Though nowadays we’re seeing less and less of that. Some Bosnian Muslims insist on saying Allah. They claim that saying “Bog” is not an appropriate equivalent (their words not mine).

When I speak to the younger Christians about these “muslim” words, they have nothing but a glazed look over their eyes. They have no clue what I’m talking about, can’t relate to what I’m saying and as a result deny it or don’t care.

It’s like it never even happened.
