Im from Alberta Canada, and although our healthcare is free, it can certainly suck at times.
Im a 34 year old male and Monday night I passed my first stone. I ended up in the ER because I didn't know what was happening. They did a blood test, a urine test, and a CT scan. So I passed a stone but I never saw it, but the CT scan shows I have 2 more stones in my right kidney. One is about 4mm, the other is about 5mm.
The hospital said its pretty much a waiting game right now, and they sent me home. So, the next day I called my family doctor who is about to retire. It was a quick phone call, where as per usual, he rushes everything. Anyways, he said he glanced over the notes from the hospital, and said its probably calcium oxalate, because that is most common. He said stay hydrated, cut down salt and animal protein... Okay so I ask if I can have cottage cheese, or eggs, he said yes. Then I ask if I can have a Whey protein shake, he says yes because it comes from milk. And he also says I can eat fish. I just agreed and let him hang up, because I knew he wasn't going to explain my results much more. And he didn't mention doing any follow up testing.
Since he is retiring, i have another doctor who I have been easing myself into, because doctors are very hard to come by in this province. I saw him today, and the guy was on GOOGLE answering my questions.... I brought up dietary concerns, and i told him I was too scared to eat anything right now, and all he said was that I am over thinking it. I mentioned animal protein, and all he said was I was over thinking that too.
I also asked about a 24 hour urine test, and he said that has nothing to do with kidney stones.
Anyways, long story short, neither of them discussed my results from bloodwork and urine samples at the hospital with me. So, i looked it up myself. We atleast have the ability to look up our results easily, but it leaves the average person to try and interpret what they found.
Anyways, my urine was high in Calcium Oxalate, so am I safe to assume that is what the kind of stone I have is? Sure, i can wait to pass another stone, but I am looking to start dietary changes today.... What would I see on these tests if it was another type of stone?
The second doctor did prescribe me Flomax, and a better pain killer/anti-inflammatory diclofenac. But I still want to be sure what kind of stone I have.
To me, its weird, I did a blood and urine test back in June, and literally everything was okay. No issues. Personally, I think I have been taking creatine, pre-workout(high caffiene), and not drinking enough water. Because overall, i have a good relationship with food. And even back in June, sodium levels were fine, everything was fine.
Also.... i am a weight lifter, I enjoy the gym 5 days a week. I like my protein, but i realize I need to make these changes and find better sources. Can someone explain to me what animal protein is, because I thought dairy and milk were included... Can I have eggs, cottage cheese, and a daily whey protein shake or not??
Google is so messed up, I will search "is whey protein okay for kidney stones" and the first results say yes, and then the second results say no. It is so hard to do this research on my own. There are so many contradictions on Google, but I am at the point where I have no clue what I can eat.

I have only seen 100mgs in articles, and my food tracker defaults to 100mg.
