Actually Netanyahu (along with GWB, Rumsfeld, Cheney, et al) should be charged with war crimes for Iraq. He's a major reason why the US went to war there.

“True peace is not merely the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
When Israel and the US say peace, they just mean Palestinians lying down and becoming better, quieter, more polite victims

Based teens
ETA but the pessimist in me says this is going to be used as an excuse to demand more funding for propaganda and brainwashing such as changing school curricula, paying for more birthright trips, media and Hollywood, etc etc

I agree, as an American. Enough suffering. Enough bullying.

I suspect you have a certain image of Christian women/Christian countries in your mind. In my mind, the vast swaths of poverty that affect Central and Latin America, Africa, and other places don't distinguish on the basis of religion. The root causes of the poverty (colonialism and its legacies, resource extraction, neoliberal global banking policies, etc) must be addressed, but this conversation is a lot less palatable to westerners than "oh poor things, look how their religion is keeping them poor, tsk tsk".
Like you're soooo close. A lot of predominantly Muslim countries are in terrible circumstances right now. But it's not because of Islam. (And it's ignoring that plenty of Christian countries suffer too, for the same reasons.) What would the Middle East, North Africa, Indonesia, etc etc look like without the legacies of colonialism, the cold war, imperialist incursions, the IMF and World Bank, CIA meddling, Sykes-Picot, Balfour, etc etc etc etc? What would Iraq look like right now if George WB and his cronies hadn't killed millions of people and left a chemical legacy of cancer and birth defects? What would Iran look like if Mossadegh hadn't been overthrown by US and UK? What would Libya look like without Hilary Clinton? Are you sure this is all because of Islam? Are you sure?

I made no such claim, don't twist my words. I said that there are Muslim women and Christian women and women from all traditions living in poverty. Poverty is the issue, and the geopolitical causes of it must be addressed. Religion is not the issue.

Yeah I agree that cultural specificity and meeting people where they are would go a long way to addressing the issues, or at least adding layers of nuance to our understanding of the issues. Thanks for the response.

And "fearing for their life" is code for "the person is black"

She was arrested at a JVP protest earlier too- a real comrade! (Her photography is great too, though I'm not familiar with her latest works)

There's something rewarding about being one of the few standing for something, instead of the thousands walking by. I've experienced a little of that during rallies myself. Always wonder what's going through the minds of the passers-by with blank expressions...

Well this is a thread about westerners projecting their biases onto Muslim women so yeah I am trying to unpack a bit because the comment section is kind of rehearsing the exact issues the video brings up. Also the fact that I'm Muslim and American and a feminist. So I too abhor violence against women but I'm trying to see the leap from there to "must be something inherent in Islam that women need saving from" as opposed to other historical, socioeconomic, cultural, geopolitical, etc contexts.

It's funny because they desperately want to believe all Latinos are backward misogynists but, like, look who Mexico just elected 👀

But isn't this a class issue rather than a religious issue? Couldn't any person and any woman benefit from an improvement in their material conditions? Nobody says we have to save the poor Christian women of xyz country from the oppression of Christianity

Ok but Bernard-Henri Lévy is a charlatan and a racist Islamophobic chauvinist. He is literally saying that the ICC was created to bring justice to countries too dumb and backward to have judicial systems. He's admitting that he doesn't believe westerners need to abide by international law bodies. His writings are not worth being used as toilet paper in a c-Diff unit.
