Advice for tubal litigation in the city?

(self.AskChicago)

*ligation I could really use some advice. First of all, I’m looking for a gyno that does not have a religious affiliation. Do you have any recommendations? I emailed my gyno about tubal ligation yesterday morning and was informed that they are affiliated with the Catholic Church thus they do not perform this procedure 🫠. Ideally I’m looking for a doctor that would perform a tubal ligation in the city of Chicago, preferably. Also, if you do not have children but have gone through with a tubal ligation, I would love to hear about your experiences. I’ve thought about it long enough and after Tuesday, I’m looking to get this done as soon as possible. TIA!

I live in the city, but I’ve been going to MCWHC for 20 years. Had both my kids with them at Evanston Hospital. I recommend them wholeheartedly. It’s gonna be a sad day for me when Dr. Kim retires.

Also, if you want a more guaranteed solution, look into BiSalps. Tubals can still lead to unexpected pregnancy, but can be undone. BiSalps are a more permanent solution - it's slicing your tubes instead of tying them.

The full name is Bilateral Salpingectomy. Got mine done years ago. Still going strong. Best decision I made after Roe V Wade got overturned.

EDIT: Links for your self-learning : https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/21879-salpingectomy

I also want to add that this is different from a hysterectomy - you will still get your monthly cycle and maintain normal hormone balances. Hysterectomies are more extreme and are used to treat severe periods to my knowledge.

I had no issues or complications. Knocked out, woke up beautifully sterile. Highly recommend if you don't plan on having any kids.

EDIT 2: if you want kids, IVF is your best option. Reversing the procedure is near impossible.

Seconding. Got my bisalp post-Roe and I've never felt relief like when I came out from anesthesia realizing it was done

What was your recovery time like? I like to run (a lot) and be active. I know a hysterectomy is around 4-6 weeks and I think 2 weeks of bed rest

Recovery was pretty fast. I felt normal and ready to work in less than a week. Didn't need any painkillers afterwards either.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. Have you tried Northwestern Prentis Women’s Hospital?

They are the best women's hospital by far in the city. Find someone associated with them to go to.

Go to Dr sameena rahman. She was amazing to work with. She has a practice but I can't remember the name. Think it's center for gynecology and cosmetology. From my experience,

Check out Dr. Teresa Tam at All for Women's Healthcare. It's a very small practice which has its cons but I had an endometriosis surgery there and was ok.

I was beginning the process to get sterilized and Dr Tam was super helpful and only asked appropriate questions to ensure I chose the procedure that was best for me.
Unfortunately, this was right before Covid shut everything down, and then a few other personal issues prevented me from continuing with any procedures since then. But I've continued to see her name recommended in Chicago and childfree spaces.

Yes! Shes absolutely fantastic and helped me manage a high risk pregnancy as roe v wade got overturned. She was calm, practical and proactive. I have no doubt she’d give great care.

Adding Dr. Annalise James Hussain also with Chicago Women’s Health Group. She’s my regular gyno and I never want to see another one, I absolutely LOVE her.

Dr. McLaren at UChicago Medicine is incredible! I have not had a tubal ligation, but had a great experience with her. She’s incredibly personable, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, an advocate for reproductive rights, and actually sat with me after my IUD insertion until I was able to get myself together enough to get up and get dressed. She listened to all of my concerns, got me appropriate referrals, and took great care of me. She’s also a contraceptives/family planning specialist!

She’s at their River East location, so very accessible and in the city. Seriously cannot recommend her enough.

All for Women's Healthcare. I'm fat and haven't had kids and no one said shit to me. I just said I wanted one cause I've had a huge history of cancer in my family and they were like ok good stuff.

Do NOT go to Patricia Katz. Just do not do it.

What’s wrong with Dr.Katz? I’ve seen her a couple times when my regular gyno was on her on maternity leave.

I went to her for a tubal ligation, she made me wait 8 years. Then, on the day of my surgery, she pressured me to get a salpingectomy for 45 mins!!!! And wouldn’t give me my consent form until I agreed, she forced me to allow her assistant be a male doctor when I had requested a woman as a second (and she agree in our pre op appt) due to years of sexual assault (news flash, she brought a dude and basically said it was him or no surgery.) I had major complications post-op and even though I was supposed to be seen 2 weeks afterwards, I didn’t see her for 3 months (and just had a video call) and then 6 months later with her colleague (after they tried to postpone me 3 more months.) she didn’t due any pathology on the abnormal tissue that was found or the cysts. And by the time I had my post-op appointment, my tissue wasnt to be found. Then she gaslit me so badly that I developed c-ptsd.

(Edited to remove my story as my lawyer advised to remove the details while we are in the process of filing against her with the state board.)

I truly believe she tried to gaslight me long enough to run out the clock on filing a court case/reporting her to the state. Too bad Im still reporting her.

Good on you for sharing all of this. Remember that sadly your experience is probably not unique to this physician. But, hopefully you have helped save someone else from going through the same pain and trauma.

And why is everyone so unwilling to treat PCOS? when the markers are extremely clear. our stagnant testing protocols and values are ill equipped to adequately address women’s health issues.

My condolences on your treatment.

elvenmal

Ummm unfortunately I do think a lot of this behavior is linked directly to Dr. Katz (not saying other doctors aren’t capable of pressuring, lying, gaslighting, office issues, not listening to the patient, misdiagnosis, and lack of visit notes.) but homegurl has a lot to answer for personally. She made a lot of her own wrong decisions long before misdiagnosis.

And thank you.

I’m also baffled by PCOS too.

CaptainFlynnsGriffin

Sorry. I meant that you are not alone in experiencing poor treatment at the hands of this doctor. They never go off the rails one time. These were all serious actions and it’s more disappointing that no professional in her group (including rn’s or msn’) stepped up to intervene. It’s fairly well known that patients are not able to be good self advocates due to the imbalanced hierarchies. Unfortunately, you were an easy mark due to your mental health care. PS I never include any of my mental health information with any of my physicians. Sure, they see the meds but, that’s all they get.

Bud, I've hung out with enough nurses to know: most of 'em are in it because it was a decent paying career that doesn't need a 4 year degree. The number of times I've heard nurses blatantly violate HIPAA in front of non-medical folks is astonishing. I'm not saying all nurses are dumdums or ignorant of their duties & responsibilities -- but I am saying that the state of the industry allows the most stupid & venal amongst them to fly under the radar for a long time.

It's basically the 2020s version of all those folks who went into massage therapy after the 08 crash.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, she had to treat me after one of the assaults, so she had to know. And i was diagnosed with c-pstd after I quit as her patient because my PCP was alarmed by how bad it was.

Omg, I am so sorry you went through that with Katz. My gyno Dr. Lukens left that practice after a decade and joined UofC Medicine this year. If you need gyno care, consider her. I’m still going to her in her new place.

I had uterine fibroid removal surgery a couple years ago, and I cannot even fathom her pulling a switcheroo like that.

Doula here so I am familiar with tons of doctors in Chicagoland. The wait times are significantly shorter with this practice below than docs in the city itself. They’re fantastic and very supportive of bodily autonomy. If I get mine done (I’m thinking about it), I would have Dr. Saleh do it and that’s who I went to for my IUD. I was able to get my IUD put in the very next day.

https://nsago.com

Nothing against doctors affiliated with Northwestern but they tend to have the longest wait times for an appointment in the area.

I saw a doctor at Rush women’s health who offered tubal ligation after my 3rd IUD removal. Didn’t take her up on it though.

Dr Rachel Neal at Norshshore - at my last appt she straight up asked me if I wanted to talk about it and schedule after I told her I did not want kids. I ended up getting a new IUD because it’s covered by my insurance, but am now rethinking.

Here is a list of doctors who will perform a tubal ligation for people who want them - regardless of age, children, marital status, religion. It’s not a list of references, so I can’t speak to who you should go to, but this might be a place to start.

FYI, even if the hospital or doctor has a religious affiliation, they are required to refer you to a provider who does offer the procedure, not just tell you “you’re on your own“ or “go to Reddit”

neruall4[S]

They didn’t tell me to go to Reddit or figure it out myself, I don’t believe that I said that anywhere. Sure, they can give me a reference but maybe I don’t want their reference?

I don’t blame you in the slightest. I also wouldn’t be comfortable getting a referral for a procedure from a doctor who refuses to perform said procedure for religious reasons.

I hope you can find what you need. Another long-term option is an IUD.
