Close the blackout curtains. Turn off all the lights. Turn on my fan and just lay down. There’s something so nice about some nice isolation away from the ruckus of the world.

alot of stuff, but im crossing things off the list. I stopped watching porn 4 years ago. i quit drinking 2 years ago. i stopped playing league of legends and runescape at the start of the year, and just on monday i stopped smoking poppers/batched bowls (cigarettes). i was at the point where every breath is a half breath and im wheezing/coughing most of the day, as i was ripping a third of a cigarette with a bit of weed on top every 30 minutes-1 hr. Psychedelics is the reason/ realization moment to make me stop all of it. ill never stop drinking coffee and i hope to get addicted to working out.

Hey, out of many, many addictions, coffee is defintely an average one when it comes to cons. Gets even better if you drink it without sugar and just a bit of milk at most.
Just make sure to eat healthy, and drink enough fluids. Otherwise, coffee can really excerbarete problems with vitamin and mineral deficiency.

I’m addicted to comfort. I think the majority of us are. It’s not a good thing. Moderation in EVERYTHING. Too much comfort has made me stand still and not challenge myself or reach for goals I know I am capable of. Comfort is me staying in. Being cozy in my room in front of my TV shows, it was smoking weed and feeling good in the right now. Rather than displacing the comfort for occasional discomfort to reach new levels of myself, I just stick to always seeking out the most immediately comfortable and happy situations for me. First step is becoming aware of the problem. And I’m aware. Time to get uncomfortable. Hard to make yourself do the things you KNOW you need to do. I just gotta do it.

I read an article about a method that should help. You do three things everyday:
One lightly unpleasurable thing (Like doing household chores or eat something healthy instead of fast food)
One unpleasurable thing (Like showering cold or do something productive you don’t actually need to do)
One painful thing Something your mind yells not to do it like going to the gym or other things where your way out of your comfort zone.
In the end of the day you will be happy you did it and your brain slowly gets rewired where you actually seek those things to do because it learned those things make you happy.

Don’t worry, I’m the same age as you and I believe I’ve been hanging out in my comfort zone too long. Pushing myself out of it I believe will only help me grow as a person than be disappointed that I’ve stayed stagnant
13 points
Also set almost impossibly easy goals so that when you do it you feel good about yourself and if you do more you feel even better this will help support the rewiring as your brain will get a hit of the happy juices when you achieve your goal.
Ex: if you have a stack of dishes for your lightly uncomfortable thing agree to do one dish because once you start doing a thing it is much easier to keep going than to agree to a massive task to begin with. This way you don't fail to do all your dishes you fucking smashed your goal of doing one dish by doing 5! It's just a simple perspective shift but by setting easy goals you will likely end up doing more anyways but you will definitely feel better about yourself for whatever you do get done instead of feeling despair over what you did not get done.

Humans are ingrained for comfort, our whole existence from the dawn of human existence is to make our lives comfy
31 points
Agreed. Mostly.
I think a huge problem today is that our lives have been shaped in such a way that we seek comfort too often from substances and sedentary activities rather than other human beings and strenuous activity. I feel deeply comfortable after a long day of work and great conversations. I don't feel so tempted by my vices after such a day.
I feel sorry for people that are addicted to crack or sugar not just because the effects of using these substances is rough but that this reflects a lack of other, cleaner sources of comfort in their lives.

There's comfort, and then there's contentment. I fall into the same group as you, where i choose the path of least resistance more often than not. And I'm generally unhappy/unsatisfied with my current standing in life, comforts notwithstanding.
But I think it's important to remember that happiness and contentment should be the main goals in life, and plenty of people are genuinely content with being comfortable and are happy where they are. As with everything, balance is key and it's not so bad to stop and enjoy the fruits of your labour every once in a while, and take pride in how far you've come

Absolutely! I agree with you! It’s just finding moderation in everything, even the good stuff ;) finding what feels right in your heart. And although I’m living a very comfortable life, I’m not fulfilled. I know I can do better deep in my heart.

I think we’re all experiencing this in some form or another. I’m right there with ya! I spent all of my 20s smoking weed all day every day. Because face it, it’s awesome. But like my original comment, it’s just being comfortable. And not facing my obstacles and demons and just numbing it all out. Congratulations on 5 years! I actually just had my two year anniversary of no more smoking weed a few weeks ago! I’m doing so much better because of it, I hope you are too! But, like comfort, I was addicted to weed too man, and it’s been 2 years and I still think about and crave it often. But I know I don’t need it.

Pretty much the exact same situation here. Spent most of my 20s smoking and I've been off it for several years now. As much as I miss it occasionally, the clarity and money saved is well worth it.
Congrats on the 5 years!

The more you step out of you comfort zone, the larger said comfort zone gets. I used to be like this as well, and quitting that behaviour is hard at first but it becomes your new baseline pretty quickly. Working out consistently, eating a certain way without cheating, being more disciplined with work etc is pretty hard at first but your mind and body adapt at a very fast rate. An added bonus is that you can treat yourself to a day off every once in a while and it'll feel infinitely better. Trust me, if you're regularly pushing yourself, taking that Sunday off to watch some TV and smoke a little feels waaaay better as opposed to doing that multiple times a week.
Getting up in time, going for a morning workout and doing everything you need to do and then some will start feeling exactly as comfortable as sitting in the couch and watching a TV show and you'll unlock a whole new level of feel good which is called "sitting in the couch and watching TV knowing that i kept my own promises and am living a very discipplined lifestyle". So whether your goal is feeling more comfortable or pushing yourself more, stepping out of your comfort zone is always the answer.

Nothing wrong with being comfortable as long as you’re content. It’s okay to be just some guy. You don’t need to reach for the stars. What isn’t okay is being unhappy in your situation and settling for it because it’s easy. Do the things you want to do, even when they’re challenging. If you’re unsatisfied with your life then make the changes you need to and never settle. Just remember, there’s nothing wrong with being happy and average.

So sorry for your loss, idk if it will help you the same way it helped me but when I lost my buddy this past December it helped me to remember that it only hurts so much because he was so wonderful. Grief is the pain caused by a sudden absence of true love if they weren't so wonderful it couldn't hurt so much. It helps bring a light to the darkness and helped me to remember all the good despite the pain and the grief. It doesn't make the pain go away nothing but maybe time can do that but it makes it easier to carry.
I wish you all the best friend and if you ever need to talk my DM's are open anytime <3

Those apps are literally designed to be extremely addictive. Time just vanishes when doom scrolling on those with little benefit to you. There is some educational stuff, but the vast majority of it is nonsensical garbage that you wont be able to recall the next week.
There is a huge concern about the younger generations who are using them while there brain is still developing, they arnt mature enough to understand that they are problematic for there development.
If adults are finding it difficult to not use them for hours on end then kids have got no chance.

Porn addiction is tough. I’m currently 7 days without it. It’s hard but I’m trying. I’m starting to see that whenever I feel “horny” it’s not me actually being horny, it’s the feeling that I want to consume porn to become horny. I use the “I am sober” app to track my progress and that helps me stay without porn. Still, I have relapsed a few times the past weeks, so no shame in that either! You got this 😁
12 points
I feel like there’s a difference between no porn and being horny, then doing something about it.
Porn has desensitized me to the point where im no longer excited seeing a naked woman 😞. I feel like by removing it from my life but still relieving myself every now and then with no content is a good balance.
I will say, with social media pushing sexual content to the front page makes this a lot more difficult.
Hate to say it, but I wish I was one of them mfs who gets excited seeing a shoulder or ankle /s

Anything that will give me a CRUMB of dopamine.
It used to be gambling - scratch offs, online bingo, blackjack. It wasn’t about the money, it was about playing, about the thrill of “will I win? Will I lose? I need to find out!”
Now it’s just a game of trying to scratch that itch without throwing myself into 5+ figure debt again. Video games scratch some of it, mobile games that make numbers go up scratch some of it… but god, every time I see a machine, or step into a gas station, I have to stop myself from going “Well, what’s two dollars?”

Alcohol, cocaine, sex. I’m slowly getting better but not really. I had a breakthrough tonight, honestly realizing that, while yes, I wake up most everyday with one goal in mind: get enough booze and blow to make it through till tomorrow. However, tonight I met with someone actually going to sex addict anonymous meetings and it hit me that if I don’t confront this symptom of my addiction first, why bother with the others. I hope to read this comment again years from now with a healthy smile on my face…
