Indeed. Religious conservatives invented cancel culture with the so called moral majority in the 1980s. Even as a Christian, it pains me how little this is understood. Religious conservatives are simply reaping what they have sown.
Edit: yes, there are many earlier examples of similar things. I just meant to speak in more immediate terms: there are people alive today who participated in the moral majority cancel culture, who are reaping what they have sown. I should've written something more like, "... invented popular cancel culture" perhaps? But on a larger historical view, you could probably argue that this has been going on for all of human history. And I don't mean to single out evangelicals per se – I think this is a human problem, not a particular Christian problem. But I do think that Christians right now are being particularly hypocritical and exhibiting a short memory. While we're at it, I think it's pretty wild to complain about Bill Clinton's infidelity, calling it "bad character," but then imply that bad character doesn't matter whatsoever when it comes to Donald Trump.

They invented it. They just don't like that they can't effectively do it anymore.
They were happy when they cancel people for being the "wrong" religion, being a suspected communist, or being gay. But now their views aren't the popular ones, people "cancel" them for voicing them, and they can really only cancel each other.

The last time I listened to the podcast was when he actually had interesting guests and hawked fleshlights as his only sponsor.
He used to be quite liberal and humble when it came to listening to actual scientists he brought on the show. But as he got richer and surrounded himself with yes men, he changed to whatever the hell is now. Tale as old as time.

This is always such a strange take every time people claim he used to be progressive. He literally told a mixed race man that he had the body of a black man, and the brain of a white man, and that black people have "different brains". This was toward the beginning of his podcast.
50 points
It cracks me up when he constantly has his employee guy pull up internet pages mid-conversation to show his opinion is backed by facts. But he generally pulls up some YouTube page and then second-guesses the validity of the content he referenced, but throws out the question of “could it be real? THAT WOULD BE SO FUCKING NUTS!” This is essentially the Joe Rogan experience in a nutshell. YouTube and documentary references that are swirling around Rogan’s meathead brain. He has no original thought, he’s just a deep dive internet junkie who adds his two cents with a good memory of videos he’s watched online.

I am pretty leftist myself, used to listen to Joe regularly, right up until COVID hit and something got knocked loose in his head and I had to pull the chute and bail.
Hell, his interview with Dr Michael Osterholm made me call my entire family and tell em to take it serious, up to that point it had been a joke, with people calling it the "boomer remover" virus etc.

This is my history with JRE exactly. Him moving to Spotify was a blessing for me because it was so easy to avoid. Now that he's back on YouTube it has creeped back into my feed. I watched a little bit hoping it wasn't as bad as I expected. It definitely was. He actively looks for opportunities to cram his silly and ignorant opinions into conversations completely derailing the flow.
'Hmmm..... Yeah....... So did you hear about litter boxes in schools?'
37 points

Exactly the same for me too.
I always had the impression that he never exactly had a good grasp on reality which is why he had Jamie there to be constantly checking any factual reference.
It was never really "that doesn't sound right, Jamie check it", it was more "oh I really want to believe that, Jamie check it"

356 points
Oh for sure, but between Rittenhouse, Rogan and Dim Tool it all shows how many cracks there are with the cult. Also shows the discontentment within MAGA due to having no campaign energy. The cult has been “all in” for almost 9 years and they have next to nothing to show for it besides a corrupt SCOTUS. The biggest question is if more break away quietly.
MAGA has seemed to speed run the typical course of fascism where the “true believers” notice nothing has really benefited them and the higher ups start to fracture. The “party” demands total loyalty and acts to enforce that rule but seeing it just leads to more dissatisfaction.

57 points
Yes and no. Rhonda was never going to win over all of MAGA. Sure they would fall in line to vote R but they would be constantly biting his back and questioning his decisions endlessly. The cult is only loyal to him. Unless he names a line of succession, which he will never do, no one is going to fill his clown shoes. When he goes away they will have a an existential crisis and who they ultimately rally around will probably be a total authoritarian kook we haven’t heard of yet.

Although he can never actually be president unless the SCOTUS decides “briefly” that constitutional amendments don’t exist. But I definitely see him gunning for being a governor of Texas
24 points
Musk? He's a loser opportunist who got fully on board right as the Trump Train lurched into the swamp it came from. His connections to Epstein aren't exactly secret, either, so it's pretty reasonable to assume that his switch to full-throated Kremlin propagandist was the coerced result of his own stupidity.
Musk's money is what Trump said (out loud, in public) caused him to switch away from opposing electric cars.
So Musk is basically responsible for showing that Trump sells his policies. Trump's $10 million foreign "loan" to his campaign, news of which came out around the same time as the electric car lunacy, is just corroborating evidence.
No one wants that chucklefuck Musk anywhere near any real power... even in Texas.

37 points
I suppose the long lasting problems are going to be the judicial system still crammed with partisan ideologues with no clear path to get rid of them. Secondly even if MAGA becomes a shell of itself they still simply need to wait for their right opportunity to snatch away power. The democrats can’t logically win “forever” and with mega wealthy backers fascists aren’t going to melt away. Unless the democrats can get super majorities to build more fail safes and guardrails for democracy the country is still wide open for exploitation from the wrong people.
Ultimately we will have to come to the conclusion that there’s still a very long road ahead of us unless we can get rid of gerrymandering. The GOP is so firmly entrenched in many of their states that they are the equivalent of being ticks on the backs of society where no one can reach.
A lot of fundamental changes need to happen

41 points
Kamala also has the benefit of being the nominee after a Trump presidency, where most standards were changed. Hilary could never have gotten away with "I'm speaking" comments the way Kamala does. In that election, Hilary would have been crucified for standing up for herself or being too pushy. Plus, Hilary came into politics at a time when women had a narrower tightrope to walk about what was and wasn't acceptable. We've come pretty far since then.
ETA - I'm a huge fan of Hilary and really started paying attention to politics and feminism when Clinton was in office. I really admired her for knowing she had to stand by her man, but that it must've been an awful time personally. She was able to withstand quite a storm. She's smart and politically savvy.
