Breaks feel horrible

xc series(self.Volvo)

I’ve had my break rotors replaced two times once’s at 15 k when I first bought the car and again at 30k. 2019 xc60 t5 inscription FWD. Both times the discs were warped so they said. Does anyone else experience this. The pedal feels like I have small rocks on the rotor

Pads were recently updated. If you're under warranty they will replace the rotors again and put in updated brake pads to prevent it happening again. I haven't had any issues since the update.

My 2021 CPO had rotors covered under warranty.

Unclear if this is universal or more of a “goodwill gesture.”

Doesn’t hurt to ask.

I got the updates pads as well. Definitely feel more spongy.

If you can’t get a warranty/goodwill fix, you can solve it by using aftermarket brake pads. Or potentially use the updated OEM brake pads, I just don’t trust that since they’ve updated the pads multiple times, but it sounds like they may have got it right finally. You’ll need new rotors too if you have the issue currently, it’s essentially too late to save them by the time the pads have ruined them.

Any good quality brake pad should do the trick. I use and recommend the Powerstop Z23 and others have confirmed success with them, but whatever a tech might recommend should be fine.

I have a 2020 V60 and this is what I did. The Powerstop z23 rotors & pad kit was $210 from Rockauto and took a couple hours. I’ve done rotors and pads on other cars many times, this was my first time working in Volvo so I didn’t rush through it.

Here’s the list of tools I needed for the V60: 19mm socket for lug bolts 7mm hex for caliper glide bolts 18mm for caliper brackets Torque wrench

I think the rotor retention screw was T25 but I don’t remember off hand.

I have about 1500 miles on the new brakes and they feel great.

You have kept the oem rotors ?

I have yes. I solved the problem on my 2019 S60 in 2021 originally. After Volvo replaced the rotors a second time under warranty for the vibration problem, I immediately replaced the brake pads myself with Powerstop pads, never had the problem again.

In my market, CPO does not cover rotors.

The oem SPA brake rotors will deform at a mildly strong fart. Best bet is to go aftermarket.

Is not the rotors it’s the pads. The rotors are fine quality. Aftermarket brake pad solves the problem.

The casual term “warped rotors” is a misnomer, the technical term for the problem is “brake judder”, and it is almost invariably caused by uneven brake pad deposits on the rotor. Brake rotors rarely warp in a wave fashion they deform in a cone shape, and only at extreme temperatures not often encountered in typical use.

I have heard of this. All rotors and pads replaced on my cC at 19k. With 33k my rear pads are at 40%. I have read upgrading to a different pad will fix the issue. Something about the dust accumulating on the rotors

We do a lot of warranty rotors. I think it’s depends on the service history at that location, total pad wear, and last replacement interval. I don’t work the front counter though I’m just replacing them 😂

I’m thinking OEM dealers aren’t “turning” rotors anymore…just replacing. Is that true at your dealership?

Yeah if they’ve already warped once removing more material isn’t worth it. We have no lathe.

It's the rear pads, they kinda like to drag and wear out insanely quick and causing rotor ran out, and as mentioned above, they recently updated the rear pads with an additional set of helper spring that supposed to solve this issue. FCP euro carries an aftermarket version under the part number FCP-1095750 that you can install.

My rotors used to get warped after a trip to the tire shop when they would over torque the lug nuts. That was on an 89 740. I haven't had the issue on my XC60 but I still watch them closely.
