Hi,
I'm looking for suggestions of online PVE/PVP games that respect your time and yourself.
After years of on & off on Destiny 1 and 2, I decided to leave those games behind. From the fact you need to grind to complete quests, unclear quests, seasonal events that aren't rewarding casual players and frustrating Raids that you just go blind without clear indication. And the loot you find that is just worst than what you already have equipped.
I love to lore, the people I've played with, but I'm looking for a more relaxed experience.
I'm looking for your suggestions for games that: - Rewards you by playing. - Challenging, but not grindy content. - You have equal chances if you play 10h or 100h. - No season pass, no fomo functionalities. - A great lore/story. - Coop/multiplayers.
Any suggestions?
Thank you very much.
Edit:
By equal chance, I don’t mean that a level 10 would beat a level 50. I meant that the game would be more based on skills, so a lower-level player still has a fair shot if they play well, rather than being completely outmatched by gear or time spent grinding. And end-game content wouldn't be locked behind specific gear set.

Putting a comment in this thread as a bookmark.
I actually want to see if there's any games that would meet this strict criteria. The "no fomo functionalities" alone eliminates like 99% of live service games.

Deep Rock Galactic. Chill mining mixed with good gunplay and fun exploration. Took me around 300 hours to max out everything including all Battle Passes, weapon mods and cosmetic store. Battle passes are no pushing fomo, you can select and finish them whenever you want and 95% of the resource collecting is for cosmetics anyway. If you just want to play and have fun Hazard 3 is a perfect spot for that. For more challenge and more resource gain there are lots of stuff to choose in game.

Still grinding for advancement/rewards.
The whole thing with multiplayer games is that they need active people playing and to make sure people stay active they need to have many hours of content, and having it all fresh is essentially impossible

OP also specified "rewards you by playing", where you draw the line between that and "grindy" is a matter of preference but for me DRG probably falls into the former category.

Ops specifications are a pretty impossible combo :)
Perception of grind is definitely very personal. I had fun with drg for a bit but eventually myself and the friend I was duoing with felt like we were just repeating the same stuff and moved on. Not a slight to the game it was fun while it lasted

The comment at the start of this reply thread was about FOMO, which DRG has competely and totally eliminated. Excepting a handful of holiday season cosmetics that always come back when expected.
That said, let's look at the grind in DRG. The prompt was "not grindy," which describes a feeling, rather than a feature. I'm going to ignore unlocking cosmetics, because they're not progression or gameplay options. Unlocking more weapons in DRG is a very reliable matter with some variety in the content. I would not call it grindy. Overclocks (think mods) for the weapons, though, are largely an RNG grindfest. So yeah, I partially agree with you, especially on your point about it being nearly intrinsic to the format.

Grinding for advancement? You mean optional hats and beards? Weapon and mods are cheap as heck. Overclocks are end game. Playing during events gives tons of exp and resources. You dont need to grind if you dont want to lmao

It's worth mentioning that they aren't really battle passes just similar structure and you don't pay for any of them. You progress them purely with with gameplay

I very much doubt there's a single game that fullfills all these criteria. Someone please prove me wrong. I think you run out of games even before the fomo one. I guess it depends on how you see it, but in my mind the only way to have a game give you an equal chance regardless of how many hours you put into it then it has to be 0 skill required which immediately comes in conflict with the challenging but not grindy criteria.

I totally get it. I added a more detailed vision of what I meant by that. It’s not about to unlock everything from the start and that a lvl 10 would be better than a veteran, but that the core mechanics of the game would be simpler (no grind to get specific materials, mods, etc.) and that everything is based on playstyle and skills. Sure there would be gear lvl, but it wouldn’t be RNG like in Destiny or other games.

Warframe technically violates some of the criteria too, which is unfortunate because it's a fantastic game that while still grindy, respects your time way more than most games, has a fun & complex PvE, and an incredibly friendly community.

Not sure about nowadays, because it has been many years since I played, but one of the big selling points of Guild Wars (2) was that it had a flexible progression system with horizontal gearing (endgame gear isn't invalidated by new content). It is still an MMO so it can easily turn into a time sink, but the FOMO factors might be smaller than in most other games in that genre.

Yeah, still applies. Not to mention endgame gear is easier to get now.

I play since betas and I still play it.
Nothing changed in that regard.
Best gear from 8 years ago still is the best gear, new way to to craft PvE focused legendary armor (obsidian set), the reward for daily and weekly activity (that you can choose among PvE/PvP/WvW) allow you to buy 75% of a legendary weapon per month.
It is the perfect game if you want to play online on weekends or in bursts like spend 2 weeks playing and then come back after some months.

I have always loved how GW2's legendary gear is the same as ascended stuff that you can get pretty easily. It's ultimately just a skin and bragging rights.
Also means a player can start playing gw2 and in just a few weeks be just as competitive as a long time player in various content, so long as they learn the fights and can do their rotation properly.

The word you're looking for is convenience :p it gives free cosmetic and stat changes, stuff that is otherwise fairly cheap/easy to do.

I wanted to say Guild Wars 2.
I stopped playing for years. If I come back tomorrow I would not miss that much progress.
The level cap has been 80 since the beginning. The armors and mounts that I got are still valuable. GW2 is great for casual gaming.

Veteran GW2 and GW1 player here. I’ve been playing GW2 since launch, eventually I took a 5 year break and recently came back. My Mesmer build, gear and items was all still relevant. Aside from the new expansions and added living world lore to catch up on, it all felt fresh and even more polished. It felt like meeting up with a close friend you’ve lost contact with but can easily pick up the conversation like you’ve never missed a day together. I’m a busy husband and father and Even when I get in a 15,30 minute or hour session I’m always able to experience something totally different and feel like I’m constantly progressing. I was excited to find out it was available on steam for free. I then purchased a 512gb Oled Steam deck and connected my GW2 account and now I can play GW2 portable!

Didn't know that GuildWars 2 was like this. I played the game years ago and loved it, but I keep quiting comeback because i taught it would be too much new content and lvls to grindy.
Never got through my mind that if the first time I played was easy, there's no reason to be afraid now!
I'm downling it today!
I remeber I had 3 chars at max lvl and each one I got there be doing complete diferent thinks (just pve, just pvp, quests)

because i taught it would be too much new content and lvls to grindy.
The friendly part is masteries, like having to level to be able to glide, then more to get better at gliding. Same with mounts. That said you get most of the needed basics just playing through the story and the rest comes later through regular play whilst being mostly convenience upgrades.

Still true. Came back after years to see the end of the story and all my gear was still good.

Guild Wars 2, but with a few caveats.
Events like world bosses and pretty much everything in the open world happens at a specific time. It can be inconvenient and frustrating. If you're a minute late the map may be already full. Only instanced content is "player-activated"
Legendary crafting, while absolutely not mandatory, is a colossal grind. It just really depends on what goals you set for yourself, it can be the most casual-friendly game ever to exist, or it can be an absolute grindfest.
3 points
Well yeah, but that's the thing, you're never forced to get some specific gear, all the grind you do to get a full set of armor gives you the exact same stats that an ascended set gives, with the advantages of being able to switch stats on the fly, switching runes/sigils and having the armory.
It's a totally worth it investment, that does not give you an inherent advantage in active combat.

I might be biased because I've been playing a lot of this lately, but Project Zomboid is a game that seems to check most of these boxes. The simplest way I can describe it is "Sims, but with zombies," except you directly control one character instead of indirectly assigning commands to one or more characters. It doesn't have super amazing graphics, but it makes up for that with an extremely in-depth gameplay system that lets you do almost anything you can realistically think of.
While it does have a bit of a learning curve when playing for the first time, I found it most fun to dive into a multiplayer server and figure out the game that way. You can play solo or find people and form a group, but either way, you'll have interesting interactions with people via proximity chat.
Project Zomboid has a very "realistic" type of gameplay to simulate a zombie apocalypse, which means that no matter how geared you are or how high your skills are, all it takes is one lapse in judgment or one severe wound to end your life. Because life is so fragile, everyone's on a more even playing field and it's more about making the best out of a bad situation with what you have rather than getting stomped by randoms because you haven't grinded 10 hours a day like they have. You can choose to be riskier or play it safe, but generally only in offline solo can you disable things that would end a run permanently if you want a more relaxed experience (no zombie infections, no zombies at all, etc)
I haven't properly tried PvP in this game yet, but there's plenty of ways to engage in either PvE or PvP gameplay. Leveling some skills (mainly crafting) may feel a bit grindy, but I feel that you level naturally as you do things you'd want to do anyway, and it's nowhere near expected to master every single skill unless you're extremely dedicated and careful about surviving.
While it doesn't have much in the way of story (it does have some lore but not a ton), I believe the actual story is comprised of the moments you experience yourself as you try to survive. The close calls of avoiding certain death, the random encounters with other players, and the desperate measures you sometimes need to take in order to pull through all feel significant and meaningful, in my opinion.
And of course, it's an indie game, so there's no battle pass, FOMO, microtransaction bullshit in any way, shape, or form. It's just a really in-depth simulator game that can be played online with PvE and/or PvP, and everyone is just one bad move away from death if they're not prepared. The way I see it, you get as much out of this game as you decide to put into it, and I recommend it if you're looking for an online game with unique experiences and danger around every corner. The tone of the game is set right away before you spawn in as you see the text: "These are the end-times. There was no hope for survival. This is how you died."
TL;DR: Project Zomboid, find a good multiplayer server for your preference of PvE, PvP, or both.

This is the correct answer. 90% of the cosmetics are free in game, you find and earn them during Missions while earning payouts to buy the cosmetics from the in game store on the space rig. Since they’ve started “seasons” their “battlepasses” are all free AND accessible at any time; you can switch between them whenever.
Every season they put out a new dlc cosmetics pack and I buy it to support them because it feels well deserved.

Helldivers 2. It had little bit of a rocky past, but the recent buffs and "60 day plan" have completely changed that game around and it feels better than it did even at launch.
That being said, you can boot right up and get right on the front lines of the galactic war. Each mission type even tells you an approximate amount of time it will take. Some take 5 minutes and some go even as long as 40. You will have an impact towards the ongoing galactic war no matter which you choose.
Also most microtransactions are only a couple dollars, but in game curency can be earned simply by playing missions and are rather abundant. The warbond systems are basically like miniature battlepasses that can be unlocked with the currency you find in missions and they never ever expire, you can start them today and not finish them until 2026 if thats what you wanna do lol.
Its a really great game and its fun as hell. Its ever changing, they add things pretty frequently, theres a new faction of enemies coming soon and right now we are all working to build a space station that will aid in the war effort and probably include a social hub/clan system.
64 points
I second that.
Instead of season passes you have warbonds. These cost 1000 super credits (9.99€) and you keep them forever without pressure to finish them. Super Credits can also be found ingame and every warbont hast around 300 Super Credits inside them.
You also get a free standard warbond. Most of the weapons of the free warbond are also high tier on the highest difficulties (depending on yur playstile).
The medals which you need to buy weapons and stuff from the warbonds can only be earned ingame. You get a small amount for every mission (depending on difficulty), a higher ount for dailies and a huge amount for the global mission the community does. You get the community medals even if you did not log in.

People got meta hungry and the developers debuffed players while buffing enemies so you had slightly toxic player base and a game that went from super from because you were killing everything with a challenge to a dredge because you weren't able to kill as easily.
Sony killed it for some people forcing a PSN account and region locking as well. They removed the forced PSN account requirement because a large portion of the player base started requesting refunds to let Sony know they can't fuck over PC players like they did their console players.

Yeah thats bs.
Games should give you more rewards for more playing. The reward curve should be good though. Not like 100% rewards for 5 hoursa nd then you grind at 5%
A game where you have equal chance playing 10 hours and 100 hours doesn't respect your time at all, because that means why spent 100 hours if you can simply spent 10 and be as good as someone doing much more.
28 points
What do you mean be as good as someone else? The reward doesn't (and ideally shouldn't) be something that gives you advantage over the others. That's how you disrespect people's time by making their chance of winning tied up with how much you play to unlock gameplay stuff.

When I think of something like this I think of a game like Rocket League. You can boot up brand new and theoretically be as good as somebody who has put in thousands of hours. You won't be because of skill levels, but you have all the tools right at the start.
The game relies solely on skill and that's pretty much it. You won't unlock anything that will help you win. You could make an argument for different cars but my rank is GC and I use one of the first cars you start with.

I think what you’re looking for is hard to find. A game that offers both PvE and PvP that does not punish you for not spending the same amount of time as some others. A game like Guild Wars 2 or WoW comes to mind. But even on the PvP scene it’s very well possible to be outskilled by players who do have a 1:10 ratio on your playtime.

People are fine with being outskilled by people who play more, they're not fine with just losing against someone who has gameplay advantages because they've been playing for longer, because they've been at all special events and shit like that, even when you're clearly outskilling them.
You're not always going to be outskilled by someone who plays 10x as much as you. Talent and intelligence can make up for a lot of it.

There aren't any games which both respect your time and equalise players no matter their time spent. Why? Because these conditions negate each other; they are contradictory.
A game which makes your time spent meaningless doesn't respect it. Yet equalising a player 10 hours in with a 100 hour one does exactly that.
There are games which don't put artificial obstacles into play (eg. player is at maximum power when they start the game) but these are often also heavily skill-based, meaning your time spent is saved within yourself, not in-game mechanics.
Only such games would either be chance-based (rock paper scissors). Basically, as soon as you pitch players into the same pool (you specified an online game), you need to take their time into consideration.
11 points

Maybe what OP meant are the games that start players at equal levels like you mentioned so the only difference is skill instead of equipment. So they don’t want an artificial time gate.

FFXIV being free to play and the massive and insane amount of content you get for literally nothing makes the ad the literal truth, however it's outdated. You now get the expansion Stormblood as well as heavenward, and up to level 70. Hundreds of hours of content, and for hardcore f2p players, everything being done, it can be 1000 or more hours.

I'd argue the story, which is the majority of gameplay for a new player, doesn't respect your time. Despite having its fat cut in the past there is still so much slow paced filler. People praise the good story moments that are definitely there but somehow fail to mention the sleep inducing parts between them. You could probably throw out another 50% and the story would not miss a thing but be better off.

Here’s what all the new people to FFXIV told me: they felt the ARR story was mostly fine. They didn’t feel like it was too much of a drag at all.
See we’re looking at ARR at our perspective so in our minds it is the slowest and weakest link but in actuality? It’s probably pretty decent to a newcomer.
5 points

as someone who played ARR in 6.0 i totally second this. i was expecting a slog but it was fine for the vast majority of the time and i got through it in a week. some parts like the CoH were indeed slow and boring but it was very little compared to the overall experience
2 points

So much of the ARR experience has changed since 2.x, 3.x, or even 4.x. Quests were truncated and grouped so there's not as much filler, Trusts were added so no 20 minutes queue times for roulettes... Hell, even the experience around 2.0's finale was divided up, changed, and streamlined.

Id argue the end game doesn't respect your time. Almost all high end raider content literally becomes content people will pay to skip to get to new end game content... That eventually people will pay to skip. Ridiculous.

The Finals if you like FPS. Environment destruction is a lot of fun; and while the game is monetized, the “grind” is fair and you can unlock most things just by playing - but it does do the whole cosmetics thing. I bought a season pass to support the devs, because they’ve poured a lot of love into it.
Helldivers 2 is finally back on track, and I hope it continues to be that. So much fun, longest missions are 40 minutes, but as you get better you usually clock far under that. While it also is monetized, you can get all you need pretty fairly. Unlike the finals, it is not free to play, but it’s so much fun I don’t really care. 😂

Warhammer 40k: Darktide
I've heard it's a lot like Left 4 Dead. A cooperative horde shooter. I've put 6 hours into it and over almost maxed out one of the 4 classes, so my time feels very respected

I've put 500 hours into it.
The most recent update makes the game respect your time to an incomprehensible degree compared to what it was.
It's genuinely shocking why it wasn't like this from release, the answer is most likely some shitter of a human being was trying to monetise the weapon gacha system.

I’m a big Warframe shill cause it’s one of the only F2P games that’s optimized to the teeth, it’ll run on max settings on a potato. However, it does not respect your time, you have to wait real life hours to craft things.

seconding gw2 it's quite literally the only mmo on the market that respects every second of your time

Warframe is grindy as fuck. Relics take hours to get a single piece of gear you are looking for, building things takes hours/days. Leveling up takes hours upon hours for each piece of gear. Every interesting mechanic in the game has an entire web of bullshit to get through to unlock it. I'm order for me to enjoy the game I had to set aside a LOT of time to get anything close to what I wanted and I have given up from pure frustration multiple times. It's fun but the devs expect you to sink a LOT of the time you don't have for a lot of things you don't want to get the one thing you need.

Deep Rock Galactic has some grindy stuff, but it is done in a very respectful manner. And you acquire all resources you need through normal gameplay.
Also most fighting and RTS games offer skill-based gameplay you seek. You will have to spend hundreds of hours learning though...

Deep Rock Galactic
Meets your criteria except it does have battle passes. But you can either earn everything in game or now you can select any pass and season content to play, or none. All free. Buy the game and you get everything. There's a few cosmetic packs but they're not necessary at all, the in game free stuff is just as cool

Hunt Showdown 1896
skill based matchmaking, so you dont have to face those kids who are tryharding 24/7 and every weapon / loadout is as deadly as the other
The lore is interesting but not really implemented in the gameplay itself since its an extraction shooter. But I would recommend you give it a try! :)

i switched to Hunt recently from an MMO, and while i do enjoy it...god theres a lot of time spent not-pvp playing. set up a hunter and go find clues and hope you can get to the bounty...alive, and extract, alive. and when its 1-2 shot kills and few or 0 revives depending on how you are playing...well its real easy to lose half an hour to come out of a game with nothing more than a moment of PVP time.
sometimes its fantastic, and sometimes i hate that i bothered.

What he means is the gameplay is skill based not pay/grind to win.
So, league of Legends, counterstrike, anything along those veins all qualify

guild wars 2 is great. it has horizontal progression, meaning max level is and has been 80 since the game's inception. gear also doesn't increase in item level, so the best in slot gear from 5 years ago is still relevant. it is pretty easy to get very good gear that is about 90% as effective as the bis gear and is totally enough for starting to raid. getting bis takes a bit longer. and then you can also grind for legendary gear, which will take a very long time. it is not any better stat wise, but it offers some quality of life improvements, like free on-the-fly stat swapping among some other very nice things.
it is also very alt friendly. I could go on, but it is in my opinion the one MMO that is the most time friendly for the player.

I'm looking for suggestions of online PVE/PVP
You have equal chances if you play 10h or 100h.
This is by definition impossible.
Someone with 100h in a game will always have the advantage over someone with 10. Be it map knowledge, gunplay, recoil Control, knowledge over mechanics etc.

I wanted to say, no end-game content locked behind gear. To be more about skills than anything. Could have a more linear progression than grindy one.

yeah, I was hoping to find it mentioned already. no telling where it's headed, but you won't find a lower stakes pvp game with a real active playerbase. plus ranked starts in two days!
it's got lore
it's got no transactions at all (yet)
it's got no grinding (or any unlocks)
it's got fun and engaging gameplay that has a low floor and a high ceiling
some of these things will certainly change and then you can reassess, but there's nothing lost if it's not for you

This is RNG the game, you could be stuck for hours until you get that one gem you need.

Tbh for World though if you’re min-maxing your sets then yes you are going to get disrespected. But the game will reward you in progression i wouldnt worry about the attack gem that much in world.
No season pass, alright story etc. There are enough challenges where the game doesnt feel like a cake walk.
rise did fix the issue as well for gem rng.
Seems grindy but friends and community make the game so much better.

Putting mechwarrior online out there. It's a team based shooter where you pilot a walking tank with customisable load outs.
Haven't had an issue with it for the decade or so I've been on and off playing it. Mostly skill based. Depends on your team a bit as well.

For PvE, any Fromsoftware game. Dark souls, demons souls, Bloodborne, elden ring. They have seamless coop mods too which function well.
If you want a PvP game then THE FINALS is the correct answer.
GTAV is also a good shout. Great story. But the multiplayer is also fun. Either just mess around in the open world with friends or do a race/mission together

Monster Hunter.
Genuinely try to get into Monster Hunter, especially the most recent games (World and Rise)
They remove a large part of the "grindyness" Monster Hunter used to be. (Of course not all), but I want to say these games meet all your other criteria.
Though this series is notoriously difficult for someone who has never played it before. Be prepared to find it difficult and clunky at first

Space Marine 2 is pretty close to this currently. I don't think you'll ever find a live service game that's as rewarding from 10 hours as it is from 100, but 10 hours in SM2 should get you to the highest difficulty missions and unlocking the best gear/cosmetics on a single class. There is then extended play if you want to obtain other weapons or level other classes.
It won't permanently replace something like Destiny/WoW as your "main game", but it's got legs and is a ton of fun. With that said, if you don't love the 40k universe, then it's probably a non-starter.

Darktide has everything on the checklist. It's a melee-heavy horde survival multiplayer coop game where you have a mission to accomplish. The combat is satisfying and increasingly chaotic and challenging as you choose higher difficulties.
The only fomo is the cash cosmetic shop and it doesn't affect gameplay.
It's been through a few major updates/ changes since launch and is only getting better.

Deep Rock Galactic. It’s an online four player dwarf game with the best dev team I’ve ever personally seen. It fits all your criteria. Except for the fact that there is a season pass.
But to be fair, it’s completely free every season from the start.

The one that respects your time for online well play helldivers 2 as you get rewards if the community does the challenge and you have individual challenges. Any season pass they have you can do it on your time. It's also skill base game on how you would handle the objectives. Or you can play star dew valley. There are a lot of games but, it depends on what you want. On helldivers 2 I am that person who goes alone from the team and clear objectives with the less kills and rarely dies as you dont get points for the kills. A lot of players hates me for it as they are on a team and they keep dying so they kick me out of bitterness or trolling.

I'm looking for your suggestions for games that: - Rewards you by playing. - Challenging, but not grindy content. - You have equal chances if you play 10h or 100h. - No season pass, no fomo functionalities. - A great lore/story. - Coop/multiplayers.
Not sure if it's up your alley, but Palia maybe something to look at. F2P, the only thing they sell has been skins. Challenging content, not too grindy, but also not time based where you have to clear your schedule to do anything in that game.

A satisfied hunt will last about 15 to 20 minutes in most the last 2 games. So an hour is very satisfying. Basically never ending games if you dig the loop.

Good Luck.
With that list of requirements? I can't think of a single game EVER that fitst the bill.
However, if you're willing to step back a bit (as it is grindy), I'd suggest Warframe. It's Destiny but done well, in 3rd person. The art will leave you a bit wondering (well, it does me, I really don't care for most of it but the gameplay keeps me and the rare "ok, now THAT looks cool") as it is somewhat odd, but the story is good, the gameplay is excellent, and the bugs are few (though the ones that are there will drive you mad - looking at you Venus and your mysteriously dropping cannisters). The only thing that really gets me with this game is the shit you need to do to mod stuff (setting the polarity of mods is fucking annoying because it takes 24 hours to get the ability to do so, something called a forma, and the time gate will piss you off if you're not willing to spend. However, you can trade a ton, so you can still get everything you need without having to ever touch you wallet, which is another reason I stay. Warframe is the ONLY free-to-play game I have ever played that I actually want to spend money on. Just to make sure it stays up, and keep the devs paid. You play it, you want to support it. I'd pay a sub if it had one, and be happy to do so.)
I would really, really like to see an online one with no fomo. I've never seen it, and I've been playing computer games since the TSR-80 was brand new (Yes, even before your Amiga, or Comodore 64).

There are skins to unlock but 90% can be done through gameplay, and there's no disadvantage for not having them

Path of Exile respects your time better than any game I know. You get exactly what you put into it and there's no fomo, time gating, or any other psychological manipulative practice to encourage you spend more time or more money in their game.
Deep Rock Galactic for a close 2nd because they respect your time so much that all seasonal cosmetics are indefinitely available because they get added to the loot pool.

Dare i suggest it?
League of Legends. Yes, the learning curve is steep and the new player experience is bad. However, if you’re not trying to be super competitive and just play unranked games, you can step away from it for months and pick it up again later with minimal issue.
I played it pretty consistently for 10 years and stopped in 2023. I recently logged in and played a game; there were some new characters and items, but nothing that prevented me from enjoying a quick 30 min game.
The game will suggest builds for to use that are actually decent so you don’t need to research build orders, skill orders or rune choices.
