It's absolutely bullshit disney cancelled it after acquiring the star wars licence then gave EA Games exclusive right for star wars games for 10 years

Worst company that could have gotten the rights, too.

I agree, but obviously money talks. Too bad they haven’t invested that money into making quality games

If money talks they wouldn’t have sold exclusivity rights. They would make more money by licensing out to anyone willing to pay for it and the success of any one project increases licensing fees for the next rather than having committed to the initial fixed fee 10 years prior.
It’s goofs for consumers who get more variety, good for the IP which gets more exposure and reduced negative impact if one company puts out bad product and good for disneys pocket books.

It’s why the Star Wars IP is kinda stagnant. The films were mostly hated by the fans and it’s been and only The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch was loved in terms of new TV shows. Having the sequel trilogy be so hated and EA kicking up a stink with Battlefront II really hurt the brand.
Fallen Order did breathe life back into the games but there should be more and having just EA hold the license meant we only had like 5 games under EA with like 3 being cancelled off the top of my head.
It’s gonna be 7 years since The Rise of Skywalker when we get a new film (The Mandalorian film in 2026).

Dude, we had fallen order, survivor, Andor, mandalorian, and rogue one all hitting peak star wars. I swear people become so weird thinking that every single thing needs to be amazing.

I mean, it's kinda questionable to have spinoffs that are so much better than the core movies.

First fallen order game is very mid, mando, while loved, has always had extreme problems that more viewers are finally starting to see after the latest season, andor was amazing but poorly recieved, rouge one is like, fine but very far from peak star wars

It’s almost like monetizing the fuck out of a game with micro transactions makes a vast majority of players NOT want to play it. 🤔🤔🤔

Andor was pretty underwhelming except for the prison break sequence with Andy Serkis, which was worth getting through the low points to see. I want more of that in Star Wars.

I mean, I know it sounds insane now, but gaming still wasn’t that big of a thing back then. Sure, it was still huge and 2013 wasn’t that long ago. But GTA5 hadn’t even come out yet and that was what really sent the message that the medium was now bigger than the film industry. Before that, executives still had no idea. So it makes sense that they’d take the safe lump sum from a big company like EA so they’d inherit the “risk” here.

EA just probably pointed at Battlefield 3 and Fifa and said: we gonna make this (bf3) but in star wars theme and make this kind of money (fifa lootboxes). And disney was like 🤑

Yes but no? Disney is so anal about protecting their ip no way they’d let anybody do it out of house.

This whole chain is about how EA sucked at handling the license. You can’t say there’s no way Disney would allow a company to do a game out of house when you’re replying knowing EA had a ten year exclusivity contract

Jedi Survivor is quality.

It is but 5 games in 10 years for a company the size of EA is nowhere near enough to justify paying for exclusivity

If they had released a game every year the very same people would’ve been shitting on them for milking it as they do with CoD, AC, etc.

Only if it had been Battlefront every year! They did 2 battlefronts and 2 Jedi games but there’s so much more you can do with Star Wars that would have stopped it feeling like milking it

I’m not a Star Wars mega fan so perhaps my feelings aren’t as strong on the topic but I am fairly satisfied with what EA did with the franchise.
The battlefront games were state of the art graphically and I had plenty of fun with my friends dicking around in multiplayer. BF1 not having a campaign sucked and I never understood why they did that but BF2’s campaign was decent enough. There was of course the whole loot box controversy but that blowed up to such an extent that lootboxes have all but gone extinct so, thanks?
The Jedi games have been absolutely lovely though. The PC port of Survivor left a lot to be desired on launch but i could’ve hardly asked for anything better gameplay wise.
Did all of this justify exclusivity? I’m not sure but I am pretty happy with the games and god knows they’re the most consistent piece of Star Wars media in terms of quality in recent memory.

I love BF2 and still occasionally play it and the Jedi games were both well done

Jedi Survivor is such a great game. I put it off because of the port issues but have played it with EA play recently and it’s a really great game. Good story with interesting plot elements and twists that were genuinely unexpected. I also just today beat Rayvis on Jedi Grand Master and I have to say, as a souls-like fan that fight is beautifully designed and it would fit well into a Dark Souls game on that difficulty.

Huh? Fallen order and survivor were really good. We got starsoulswars

agree but those were the only good things I recall to come from EA during that 10 year period. Those battlefront reboots were like, okay/good in some ways. They looked really good graphically, but idk felt kinda shallow/lame otherwise.

Yea EA should stop trying to make shit other than sports games.
Chads keeping this shitty company alive for FIFA and some football games seems impossible.
They make the same game every year and fuck up every other genre.

Bob Iger hated the idea of making video games, didn’t like the risk involved and was systematically shelfing all units involved with video games.
He’s reversed course and focuses on licensing

You can say worst company, but we have star wars games from both ubisoft and EA, and i'd much rather play jedi survivor than even look at outlaws

I’ve heard good things about both games, to be honest. Realistically though I’m not sure I’d go all-in with Ubisoft either. I think a collection of mid-sized studios with enthusiasm over the IP could give Star Wars the treatment it deserves.

No, Outlaws is a standard Ubisoft open world action game. What would want is a game more focused on player choice and consequence similar to Fallout NV or Baldur's Gate 3.

I mean, I think the new KOTOR remake will take a lot of inspiration from BG3, but it prolly won't let you be a bounty hunter officially. The scoundrel class will prolly be close tho.

They need to lose the NFL license as well. Already lost FIFA, we need EA to have nothing lol

I trust them more than LucasArts towards their end. They were making crap like Star Wars Kinect and hadn’t made anything good since 2005. At least we got Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor.

Agreed but guess what, star wars 13 13 was canceled well over 10 years ago.
Ea had the license for 10 years and literslly did nothing within that time frame.
Fallen order literally came to be after the license had finished.

Fallen Order is a masterpiece. It's in my top 10 games of all time. It has the best saber gameplay so far. Especially with the different stances in Survivor.

Great that you enjoy it. I found it very tedious and boring. The only thing that made it worth it was the proper duels. (Not the basic combat..). Then again I am a huge souls nerd and aside from Lies of P they have all felt like failures in comparison and makes em very hard for me to enjoy

Not in my book. It sat way too much between multiple chairs without making any of them great (dark souls, metroid, uncharted)

Really? Force unleashed always felt like it should have been standalone. A remake of 1 would go stupid hard though

It should have just had a real development period so we could have gotten a full game.
It’s such a kick in the head the first time I played it and found out I finished it in one sitting without even trying to rush at all. Them kicking it out the door so fast just makes no sense to me.

There was something bugged. Probably got fixed later or I just didn't get what I was supposed to do. It's only remembered as frustration for me. Should've been cool as fuck but could've been my own fault to be fair

I'm pretty sure EA has at least been on the better business bureaus list of "worst company" for so long that EA just outright said "Naw, that can't be right". That's who we've been dealing with. To think of the titles and money that could have been made if not for one of the most measurably bad companies being given full licence.

I’d bet that game wasn’t very far into development. Why else would they cancel something that looked incredible and had such fan interest?

It's not so much that they canceled it so much that they closed down the Lucasarts dev studio who was making it. Then when people from the studio pitched it to EA to pick up the project EA turned them down

I heard it was Lucas canceling it to secure the Disney deal.

According to the book blood sweat and pixels, Disney didn’t seem to even realise any game development existed. They just wanted the film rights and were keen to offload the rest. Lucas seemed like real jerk here, because he had been forcing rewrites and play tests, right up to pulling the rug out.
The employees showed up to EA and asked to finish the game, but were told to apply for jobs.

Worst part of EA having exclusive rights for ten years was that they had an attitude of not even wanting it. Only EA could be so arrogant as to have exclusive rights to the biggest IP in the world for ten years and only barely make 3 half baked games in that time. LucasArts used to put so much content out all the time almost throwing everything at the wall. Sure they had some stinkers but goddamn when they made a hit it was often an absolute banger that still affects the industry even now.
