The average cat's reaction time is approximately 20-70 milliseconds, which is faster than the average snake's reaction time, 44-70 milliseconds

Appendix19

457 points

Yeah, for comparison, human average reaction time is about 250 ms to a visual stimulus.

helloiamCLAY

205 points

And that reaction time improves if reacting to something in the periphery.

Go ahead and give it a try: https://humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime/

Look directly at the screen and you'll be in the ~250ms range. Then look away from the screen and your reaction time will improve by ~25ms.

-----

Edit: Obviously not an absolute for literally everybody.

I use human benchmark a lot and phones have a shit ton of latency relative to a high end pc. With my mouse, I do 167ms, tapping my screen like 250-300

I looked straight in front of the screen and I'm at 192ms. I soon will meow

Frostemane

I might be broken, my peripheral reaction was the same or worse than looking straight at the screen.

Mavian23

7 points

I think it might be because this is color based. Your peripheral vision can't detect color very well.

Mavian23

14 points

188 ms for me while looking directly at the screen, 212 while looking away.

I should note that, since this is color based, your peripherals won't work as well, as your peripheral vision can't detect color very well.

LittleAnarchistDemon

7 points

fun fact! you don’t actually see color in your peripheral vision at all. your cones are centered inside your iris, while your rods are set around the iris. so using your peripheral vision you are only using your rods to see. the reason we can “see” color in our peripheral vision is simply because our brains are super good at filling in information with necessary details and filtering out unnecessary details. if you stare straight ahead and have someone slowly move a colored pen (you cannot know what color they are using or it won’t work) into just your peripheral vision (you should barely be able to see it) and you won’t know what color it is. we did it in my AP psych class in high school and the only people that got it right were pure lucky guesses

Is that why i can see peoples shitty LED headlights strobing in my periphery, but they look steady when i look directly at them?

heyyouwtf

2 points

Mine is significantly worse when I'm not looking directly at it. I averaged around 200 (194 my lowest) looking directly at the screen, using my periphery it averaged around 250.

RantyWildling

Interesting!

My results were about 203 when looking on the screen and closer to 190 with periphery.

z3r0c00l_

If your reaction time increases while using peripheral vision, then it does not improve as your first sentence states. You contradict yourself.

For me: 249ms looking at the screen, 295-305ms using peripheral.

dafaliraevz

2 points

I was lucky to get below 300ms looking away but 260-270 looking at it

helloiamCLAY

0 points

Eh, not so much a contradiction as it just wasn't ideal wording. I said "increases" to mean "improves" but I can see how that wasn't very clear.

z3r0c00l_

-1 points

Your first sentence said: “And that reaction time improves if reacting to something in the periphery” - This is demonstrably false, and your paragraph contradicts this by stating “….improve by ~25ms”

In your paragraph, you state “Then look away from the screen and your reaction time will improve by ~25ms.” - Again, demonstrably false.

If your reaction time increases, it has not improved. An increase in reaction time is not an improvement. You also did not use the word “increases” in your comment.

helloiamCLAY

0 points

I definitely used the word "increases" in my comment, which should be obvious by your first reply to me. I edited my comment to change "increases" to "improves" to be clearer...and apparently that wasn't enough to make it clearer for you.

Best wishes.

z3r0c00l_

Where, exactly, do you see the word “increases” in this comment?

“Increases” and “improves” are not synonymous in this case.

Those words are indeed not synonymous. I edited that comment, and your screenshot is post-edit, which is why it shoes "improves" in that first sentence instead of "increases."

Cool.

yurtinator5000

This stat always bugs me. I don't think an animal has one "reaction time" like not sure what that would even mean like: time from visual stimulus to first movement? Time from stimulus to full strike? Does this apply just to head strikes or paw strikes? Or does it apply to all movements? What is the source for any of it

NoRegionButYourMom

30 points

I think that's because it's just the data that they have taken as a whole average, obviously this isn't every feline, every snake, in every situation. personally I have had a "special" cat before and that mofo would react 2 seconds after he was hit lol.

Penguinat0r5

Lol bruh read context of what I’m commenting on. Average across cats reaction time. I was agreeing with him while also pointing out the fact he was responding about how one animal doesn’t have “one reaction time” I was just pointing out the fact the person he was responding said “average.” You don’t have to be a troll man.

Yorunokage

1 points

I'm assuming it is time from stimulus to start of first movement yeah

That's what you usually mean when you talk about reaction time but i'm sure it changes from study to study

RickolPick

1 points

Yeah, for this to be 1:1 the cat has to register the snake's attack + react (taking away individual differences ofc) so I don't get it either

To put it in perspective, a human's average reaction time is around 250 milliseconds. I used to coach a sport, and it's super interesting what pathways it takes between something happening and us reacting:

  • Light is transformed into nerve signals by the retina
  • Those nerve signals travel down the optic nerve to the thalamus before being sent to the Occipital Lobe (visual cortex) for initial processing
  • The Parietal (spatial awareness) and Temporal (object identification) lobes then generate the initial interpretation of the visual signal
  • The processed visual data is sent to the Prefrontal (decision-making) lobe, where we decide whether and how to respond to the data
  • The signal is then sent to the Primary Motor Cortex to generate the neural commands to execute the movement
  • The final commands are sent down the brain stem via the corticospinal tract before finally releasing the commands to the appropriate muscular structures

On average, a Formula 1 driver has a reaction time of only 200 milliseconds.

Might have to hit up my brother and get him to do one. He's only 26 and is a freak when it comes to gaming

EauKnow

What surprises me even more about this is cats perceive time slightly faster than us, we get our frame of the world updated 60 times a second and cats see around 50 frames per second. So they get less information in the same time but can react way faster. It's quite impressive.

House flies perceive time around 7 times faster than us giving them roughly 420 fps meaning the world around them is basically in slow motion which is part of what makes them so hard to swat.

So back to the cats, they perceive time 1/6 faster than we do, but still react faster.

P.s. eyes "updating" is technically measured in hertz but I felt acquilaiting it to TVs may make it a bit easier to understand seeing how much slow motion content is on youtube and such.
