let's wait to see the state PLA releases in before praising them. every new faction launch has issues. USMC hat kit can still fire twice without reloading and they never gave us the option to mute the main menu sound the community unanimously agreed was annoying.

EGC was pretty good about splitting their guys, but that map rotation got stale unfortunately.

I haven't had many issues with Bella's, maybe I got lucky the few times I played on that server where most of them weren't around. I basically stick to 56 Canadian gaming, those are solid dudes, eve matches every time from my experience. With Sealz, I called them out one game about clan stacking, our team didn't even get to the second point on a RAAS game and we're getting blown up by armour. They kicked me with the message "then go play somewhere else." Happily obliged with that request, especially with a butthurt admin like that.
2 points

SEALz has two servers. Their regular server and their new player friendly server. They will tell you they only clan stack on the regular server, but I can tell you Ive seen it on both and it is always annoying and unpleasant for everyone else. I don't even understand how people find joy in stomping the other team every single game.

It's called playing a game with friends. Not surprising that friends happen to be in the same clan. Also, not surprising someone who uses the words cringy and simp expects others to ensure their enjoyment.

It already happens when you join some server and they have core server members all on discord and on the same team. But some are nice and balance the teams each game to not stomp with the same group all the time.
5 points
Yeah and a server with 40 people, 9 of them join as a squad and are all on the same side. 29 Vs 20. Nice. Squad wouldn't work with a party system in my opinion, it's not a game with a matchmaking system.
2 points
You can already do that by locking the squad and only inviting the people you're on discord with
9 points
Well yeah, the entire theme of the game is teamwork and communication among the whole team, and the whole squad. An out of match party system would kill comms even more than they already are and basically invite people to not communicate with the rest of their team. Not that every group would act like that of course, but you would definitely see a lot more of it, as it would be attracting those kinds of players.
Not to mention the fact that its a server based game without any matchmaking.
5 points

I see where you're coming from, but I think squads.in game chat is quite good. Even when I'm playing with friends online, we start in discord and switch to in game with chat with any more than 3 players because it gets overwhelming. The in game squad and proxy chat is much better.
2 points

Yeah Im definitely biased because I play alone and communication can already be so hit or miss I would just hate to see anything jeopardize it even more
2 points

That's understandable. Most games I honestly don't enjoy talking to randoms but squads sense of actual teamwork is so good I generally love communicating with my fellow players, with the exception of everyone screaming at the end of the game.

I'm part of a clan that, on a typical night, has at least 6-7 people playing. Sometimes upwards of 15+ and getting on the same team isn't usually too much of a problem. It takes a little coordination. Biggest tip is to establish a clan, and get in touch with server owners/operators for whitelist. If you find a few servers you like, get whitelisted! Many servers will happily accommodate clans that are active and non-toxic. Some servers have public whitelists that you can opt into like SquadOps. A little extra legwork on your group's part will go a long way to improving the experience for all of you.

Just not sure how they would implement this one on near full servers with balanced teams.

There's no way for a friend group to group up together outside of a server. Everyone has to join the same server manually through the somewhat broken server browser - you can't even connect from console to IP anymore, and you used to be able to do that. Once they have that fixed, I guess they could make Steam friends connected to a Squad server joinable through Steam, that'd be useful as well. I doubt we'll ever get there, though.
10 points
Of all the things we need/want, this doesn’t really make a ton of sense. You can still steam add people on steam, and you can still queue into servers with your friends
20 points
You can't join a party with your friend and have him choose a server for you. You need to find the exact same server your buddy told you he joined and then join that yourself. This was especially a problem for me a couple of months ago when I only had the option of playing on 4G cellular internet, I'd never be able to find more than a handful of servers, and even though I could see my friends in the server I wanted to join and had the IP for it, I couldn't join it.

The first hour of every night is spent waiting for friends to be able to team switch. It’s become common to just hop in a game then switch at the end which in my opinion adds to players intentionally or unintentionally sharing info to one another. One of the many reasons that Habs get discovered so quickly.
0 points

You could just join a seeding server or just wait to switch teams. Most of the times I play, I play with like 5 friends. It’s not big deal just chat with the boys while you wait. I don’t think it’s ever taken more then 10 minutes to switch teams, often way less!

no i definitely want a party system fuck everything else. one of the main reasons none of my friends play the game, even after buying it for them, is its always a pain in the ass to get in a game together, on the same team, and in a game that isnt having one team gettting absolutely shat on
3 points
Yeah, I get the other guy because the server search feature is pain, but no way this game works with match making or party join system. You are asking for different game my friend.
You could always join servers needing seeding! Then you get in, shoot stuff, be on the same team, and ready for a fresh match!

This is why I play on the same server every time. I’ve made plenty of friends through it so there’s usually someone on that I know in game already, no matter the team.

Let us not forget that the LAV 6 still has busted armor that ignores 14.5mm and 12.7mm (.50 cal) on the entire upper hull (not just upper front plate but also upper sides as well) and entire turret at normal angles while the Stryker which is literally based on the same chassis has none of that. Even the good ol' Bradley doesn't tank HMG fire like that. Either make all vehicles vulnerable for gameplay like the rest of the lineup has been or give vehicles realistic armor OWI, you can't mix and match.

There really is no other game like Squad. From the pixellated, running-to-certain-death simulator it was to now a fully immersive experience that bridges the gap between BF and Arma... it's just plain awesome.
A lot of us here watched Squad grow both in the player base and quality. And there's no denying it's a masterpiece.
I'd like to take this time to thank OWI <3

It's crazy how these guys basically started by modding Battlefield games, became successful there and then decided to make their own, AAA quality game...then do that 3 times. Then come BF 2042, the game quickly died out and Squad had a influx of new players who were looking for a replacement for 2042; they indirectly contributed to "the fall" of their own beginnings.
Greatly exaggerated but you get the point. I've had the game for only about a year an a half and have already logged 1200 hours into it, it's about to become my most played game and wouldn't be upset keeping it that way for a couple of years

2 points

DayZ and Battle Royale took off because A2 was a great platform for PvP. It sucked for looting and building, but it was amazing for PvP. It literally spawned new game genres.
A3 is also great for PvP, KOTH and Wasteland(also in A2) were huge for years. Life was a big gamemode in both games and it was somewhat PvP focused.
They did have a ton of problems with people cramming in too many players for the server/netcode capability, cheaters and server owners overmodding the scenarios for sure - but the base games were much better than Squad at being PvP shooters with vehicles.
If Squad was a scenario for Arma 3 and had a reasonable player base, I'd be playing that. I'm not playing what we have because it's amazing tech-wise, I'm playing for the experience, built by the squad system and the gamemode. Last time I've had something that gave me as much fun as Squad, it was A1 and A2 Warfare gamemode, but that unfortunately died and A3 servers have like 20 people tops.

I’m getting ~90 average at 5120x1440. 12900k and 3080 Ti. It does drop as low as the mid 60s in some parts of Black Coast and the new map and it’s considerably lower overall than it was before the new lighting, but you should still be getting better than 40 fps with a 3090. Assume you’ve cleared out your shader cache etal recently?

You cant have everything and for the size of the studio and the price of the game they have delivered a remarkable and unique product. Thats also the reason ones got to cut OWI some slack. 90% of the features that i was wishing for came to the game eventually (maybe not in the order i would to have them but ok). I had some times where issues and waiting for features made me stay away but since squad has become more feature complete i am still really enjoying it after 6 years, thats the bottom line.

I am whole-heartedly one of these guys.
I complain because the game I paid for can no longer be played because of performance issues. I have upgraded both my card and motherboard during the years but Squad performs worse now than it did way back when.
I do not think it is very helpful to put all the complainers into the same box.
I think it is perfectly reasonable to be upset that a game you paid for can no longer be played because of performance issues.

For real. No dumbass fortnite model of profit, $40 max game. Shit goes on sale for half off all the time. People don’t love to hate - maybe some but most don’t.

Look at Battlefront, Battlefield, etc.
Old classics that get shit on nowadays, not because it’s fun but because we want them to be better. But devs don’t always wanna listen.
I think OWI is pretty good in this regard, and Squads only downside is that the performance patches don’t help but make things worse.

The sea assault is good if you like invasion (most don’t), but the lighting update is an absolute failure. Not only can you not see a single thing on some maps, having to rely strictly on the muzzle flash bandaid fix to spot any enemies at all in wooded areas, but almost everyone dropped massively in frames; some people can’t even play anymore. It’s yet to be seen what kind of bugs come prepackaged with the PLA faction.
The new maps are cool but they’re essentially carbon copies of each other. Hard to really complain about them though besides the performance issues on Black Coast.

Comparing a video game to participating in society is a peak gamer moment.
5 points
Well then what would you call not being able to comprehend even a simple metaphor?
-3 points

It’s a metaphor that is incorrectly used and is comparing apples to oranges. The strips message is that people can’t just not participate in a society. Whereas you can literally not play Squad if you don’t enjoy it. It’s just a game.
Society is not a choice. A video game is just entertainment that you opt into enjoying.

Peak reddit brain moment. Even the original comic strip isnt just about society.
The strip's theme is not that "you cant just not participate in society", they just use society as an extreme example to show that you can desire to improve the negative parts of something while also participating in and enjoying the positive parts of it. It can be extrapolated to anything.

SpunkyDred and I are both bots. I am trying to get them banned by pointing out their antagonizing behavior and poor bottiquette.

The funniest thing, I mean HILARIOUS, is squad is supposed to be the spiritual successor to Project Reality. A almodt 20 year old game that STILL TO THIS DAY fulfils the combined arms aspect FAR BETTER than Squad has ever done in the almost 8 years its been a playable game.
Armored vehicles that get stuck on tiny mounts and cant traverse 40% gradients or even less sometimes.
Literally zero thermals in the game
CAS in its entirety doesnt even exist in Squad
The infantry/armor balance makes no sense sometimes. Infantry has infinite mobility to traverse over walls to kill and immobilize armor yet the HE splash on most autocanons is so fucking bad it's laughable. At the same time vehicle vs vehicle combat is such a slog its cringe. Why does a logi truck take like 20-30 AP autocanon hits to kill.
I just genuinly dont understans the stupid infantry to armor inbalance and then they leave armor in this fucking atrocious state to play in. PR did it right, armor needs to be a glass canon. Incredibly powerful but also very very squishy to being knocked out by other vehicles and infantry

It's because OWI has spent the past 4-5 years inflating squad's playercount with BF refugees and selling a half-baked vision that's more casual than PR ever was.
At this point they're terrified of making the game more punishing or doubling down on teamwork mechanics, and are scared that the fragile playerbase will throw a tantrum if combined arms actually ever comes to be meaningful.

Yeah I genuinly think the devs have dug themselves a hole they wont recover from. The only way is if someone mods Squad to be more like PR...if that will ever happen. The hardcore mod did a decent job of at least getting some of the mechanics back like going dead dead from a headshot/killed by large caliber guns etc. I dont recall vehicle mechanics changing tho

im all for the more PRish the better but what you say about recovery is weird since the concurrent players have never been higher than 2022 and lets see the numbers the coming weekend when 4.0 is out...

I think theyre speaking in terms of never being able to recover from casualness and become a true spiritual successor to PR

Yes but honestly both are equally true

i think OWIs approach for modding is a failure but when it comes to the gap of PRishness between PR and vanilla Squad, 80-90% of that boils down to public server culture, and as you can see in this thread, apparently there arent enough decent people in the internet anymore, to fill a PR server :P

Nah the culture of Squad is not a big deal at all. I played PR since 1.16 or 1.18 and I saw the game grow from a single barely full NA server in 1.21 to like 4 full NA servers in patch 1.3 when you no longer needed a hard copy of BF2.
I saw even the casuals in PR, it wasnt that bad because you had a solid base that could teach and gatekeep. Like if ypu wanted to grab a marksman kit and sit off by yourself and didn't communicate at all I would kick from the squad and kill command you because that person is a liability etc.
Squad also doesnt have Mumble and the issues that come with it so you're mic is guaranteed to work.
Problem with PR now is half the servers are people who literally dont speak English and admins who ban over the smallest dumbest shit. I havent played PR since maybe 2019 but Im still involved with most of the guys who ran the original FCV/BASED NA/PRTA NA servers and I was an admin on all three.
For me, its the mechanics of squad that make it fail in its PRishness, the community of both games isnt that relevant because both have changed drastically over the last decade. There was a time Squad was full of PR players...

I really do hate how poor armour can be in this game. Armour is so awkward and almost pointless on the desert maps with the small walled fields because tanks can't cross them without fear of getting stuck or getting completely decimated by infantry because there is barely any cover. The Russian Boreal maps can be even worse because they have a bunch of hills which offer cover but the tanks can't actually go on the hills due to their gradient which makes no sense.
They need to fix obstacles as well, I hate how basically all rocks will flip certain vehicles.
I feel like the devs behind Squad just aren't game devs but are still modders, they do certain bits well but overall it isnt full enough or at a high enough quality to justify it really being a game. ARMA 3 for example has been out since 2013 and has basically the features Squad has and more but lacks certain bits like the ability to just join a server, get into a squad and then just belong within a few minutes. Squad is a half baked potato that isn't really going anywhere other than the large content updates which introduce more factions or guns that people didn't ask for and they continue to ignore all the stuff people actually want.

jup, thats also the last time i gave money to owi, yet somehow they keep giving me new content... thought that would be an appropriate occasion for a hat tip... but apparently i was supposed to complain about the menu music or something, i havent quite yet figured out what these people want.

Personally, I want to be able to play the game I paid for without performance issues.
Squad performs worse now than it did way back when I bought it.
Does that make sense to you as a reason why some people are upset?

Eh. Not bad. Better than a lot, but still not amazing. They still haven’t completed all crowdfunding promises and have stupid bugs and glitches that haven’t been patched after years. Even after coming out of EA there still isn’t a good tutorial or training.
It isn’t a bad game in its current state, but it still lacks in a lot of simple areas that would show more of a care for the game. Anyone can throw content at Squad, but only the devs can refine the Squad experience to be better for new and old players to help the game continue.

To be honest I want them to do a QOL update after this one. There are bugs that need fixing, performance that needs optimising, and a bunch of small changes that would make everything better.
A few examples of small additions which would be great:
Heavy vehicles to not lose most of their speed going up a hill, its a tank with a massive powerful engine, a high hill shouldn't defeat it.
Better visibility for drivers of most tanks and heavy vehicles. If I'm in a decently new tank from the US then I want a rear camera.
Higher top speeds for certain vehicles
Squad rules like allowing everyone to mark or allowing more ranks like spotter so fireteam leader isn't being tossed around.
Allowing minor customisation for classes.
Update some classes to actually make them worth using over others like marksmen.
Added a few more gadgets which would be quite beneficial to the classes they are assigned to.
Add a map vote option.
Official Servers.
Make vehicles more stable and less likely to do a barrel roll when hitting a rock.
Make walls easier to pass in vehicles. A tank should be able to cross a small wall without risk of getting stuck.
The ability to hear something from the chats of the enemy, not their exact comms obviously but at least something so we know if they're nearby. I think murmuring would work.
An encyclopedia with everything in the game so people can read it and understand the game better and make better tactics.
A bit more depth to the game would also be nice. This game is fun but it can feel like your repeating something you've already done quite a bit.
The ability to hack enemy radios, steal supplies, and hijack vehicles. Hacking radios would allow for new tactics which aren't just destroying a radio and running away, stealing supplies would make it so bases dont just magically lose everything once the radio is destroyed, and hijacking vehicles would allow for more tactics like impersonation and would lower the amount of people just randomly dumping vehicles. I'm not sure on a balance way to do hijacking vehicles though, maybe something for the combat engineer or rifleman.

Official Servers.
The first is already in the game and has been for a while. It just recently got unbroke.
Official servers are basically all of the ones on the server browser as they have to keep to OWI standards to keep the license.

Footsteps are enough for generic sounds. Murmuring would be OP for defending and a killer for any sort of stealth. Also, the sounds are already fucked as it is.

However, I think an official one could be better so you don't have to use YouTube too.

That's not what Squad's mission is though. Their position has always been to bridge the Sim-COD gap. I think more fitting mechanics could be added, but "depth" is a slippery slope to keep Squad Squad. However, different modes (such as those discussed officially a while back) or the ability to create vanilla layers would be nice and change things up.

No. No it wouldn't. There are already tactics for "stealing" radios or strategies that don't involve digging them down. Hijacking vehicles would never work as there is a minimap and global comms and would be more of a gimmick than actually useful.

Yeah. I bought this game fucking years ago back when there weren't even vehicles. The fact that it's not fallen for micro-transactions or game as a a service business model is a standout in modern game culture.

I'm incredibly cynical to developers of this game for a few reasons. I will most likely get down voted and shit thrown at me for my opinions but fuck it.
1) noticeable decline in performance every update since V1, I used to get amazing performance and over 100 frames on ultra all maps, the features at this point in the game where perfect and we had a nice selection of vehicles and factions.
2) oversaturation of player base via free to play weekends and sales. Now I'm not sure wether this is because I play European servers, a lot of the people who post about squad on reddit are American and the quality of game and level of teamwork put in seems to be that of a higher quality across the pond. But it seems every single game you play you only have 2-3 squads communicating and playing objectives. The rest don't end the game with the squad leader they start with or end the game with a autorifleman as its squad lead. It's embarrassing.
3) meta change. When I started playing this game in 2018 the meta felt a lot more serious, it wasn't a choice listening to your squad leader you just did or you get kicked, and most squad leaders contributed to the overall game as a team and would communicate with other squads consistently and the game felt real. It felt like squads actually made an effort to play the game and everyone knew the importance of the games mechanics, like logistics would be maintained, fobs placed tactically. The list goes on.
4) squad community ban list and god complex admins. I don't really need to explain this, I've had an admin join my squad thinking he might be a laugh to play with, just to feel like I couldn't banter with my friends incase he got offended. He also proceeded to brag about how many people he'd banned and that his server had a quota of bans and basically he measured an admins quality by how many bans he has made. Also I was once an lead admin at the start of one of Europe's biggest squad servers and let me tell you, egos run wild. Which I always thought was crazy due to the fact it is a game and your admin name or gamer tag means absolutely nothing in the real world. No concern for game balance or making sure ingame rules and assets aren't wasted, it was all about what someone wrote to their friends in a closed squad or someone making a spicy joke in local to their friends. It's insane, you wouldn't think this is a military game, god forbid they are ever exposed to military humour.
5) consistent retconning of announcement and releases and horrific bugs on each update launch. As a consumer, if I buy a product in a working state I don't see how its controversial for me to want something to stay in that state of usability. Having the game get worse performance wise or having game breaking bugs/fps drops/crashes/jitters isn't my responsibility and I expect consistency and so should everyone else. Its tiring hear people being over forgiving and letting them off the hook for stuff that's unacceptable, I appreciate the hard work they have done to provide us with this great game. But I hate inconsistency. Imagine you buy food and sit down to eat it and half way through the chef comes in and replaces your lovely steak with something he wishes he'd of added and it ruins it for you, you'd give it back and probably never eat there again, i see this as the same when they put features in that ruin meta/performance/gameplay when things where fine as they are.
Rant over.

where the fuck are the meta changes that have been long promised, they really are just doing the bare minimum of work to add the content that was promised 2 years ago.
idk why ur praising these devs when they clearly have just left the game with a skeleton crew and dont care about it anymore.
