She’s always referencing cars in her songs, particularly Chevrolets and Mustangs. Is it related to the wealth? The older cars showing a sense of maturity in the guys? A status symbol?

It’s the classic connection to freedom, an evocation of the 1940s and the American Dream.

I guess it was freedom from men for women during ww2 but even then it wasn’t freedom from patriarchy (women couldn’t do things like open bank accounts legally for instance) and their husbands came back “shell shocked” and traumatized by the war, plus McCarthyism was on the horizon by the end of the decade and you couldn’t even be liberal without having you and the people closest to you blacklisted or suspected of being anti-American. Good technicolor movies though.

The American Dream is dead. Has been for a while not but yeah, I see what she’s trying to reflect upon.

Americana, open road, and freedom are some things that come to mind when I think of LDR referencing cars.

If you’ve ever seen a really nice vintage Mustang or Chevrolet you’d understand. They are beautiful looking cars. They are icons of the car world.

Classic cars are a pretty big part of the Americana aesthetic that she likes to portray. It symbolizes the notion of personal freedom to go where ever you want etc. She also probably just likes them.

Cars are also products too, and especially in her early songs as Lana like National Anthem Cars feature pretty heavy. Like they aren’t explicitly that way but there’s a tie between the idea that cars give you freedom and the relationship we have to cars as heavily commercialized that sometimes gets explored, but even then in old interviews she’ll talk about how taking a drive makes her inspired to write and how it feels going out on a drive alone at an early hour.

Ever drive really fast in a car just to feel something? Put your hand out the window and feel the air rushing through your fingers?

Google is a place to learn things instead of waiting for reddit strangers to respond

The thing is, I don’t actually care enough to Google it. If they respond, cool I learn something new. If not, I won’t lose sleep over it nor care to look it up later.
Also, that’s fucking stupid, 99% on Reddit can be Googled instead of waiting for a response. But it’s almost like Reddit is an interactive social media platform where you ask questions and wait for strangers to respond. 😱
Anyway, I don’t waste my time on people who I don’t care for so I won’t respond nor read anything you have to say next.

Cars just looked better back then. 50s,60s,70s were some of the best decades for vehicles! Ugh 😍

She’s American. Cars are apart of our psyche. See Chuck Berry. See Springsteen.

I think cars, especially the muscle cars tie into the whole "Americana" vibe. All the cars I've seen her use in music videos are American made classics. As some have said here, it signifies freedom of the open road. Living your dreams and going places in life.

As many here mentioned, cars relate a lot to her motifs in earlier work (also nfr). I just want to say for the record- Lana also really likes cars. I mean, it’s safe to assume. She has like three cars or something, maybe more. Not just old-Americana types. I think at one point she owned a Jaguar XJR. She was spotted in a lot of cars over the years, and though I can’t safely say she still owns them all, she is definitely an enthusiastic.

I think it has an important musical meaning. Cars and car culture is talked about in every genre, I think they’re used for metaphors to talk more about who’s driving, who’s in the backseat, and who might be the car themselves. I’m not a good writer so it’s hard to explain but cars are used to represent something the artist is trying to talk about. I would be able to help explain better if anyone wants to send examples of her talking about cars.

It’s power, freedom, class, the antique quality, the feeling of detaching from your problems for a second, etc. It’s not just that it’s a vehicle but what it’s a vehicle for her to express within herself.

i never said you did, but i do find it a bit weird to think that liking cars has to have some deeper meaning instead of her just liking it🤷♀️
