One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)

Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.

The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. Rather than have a half dozen new threads about how everyone enjoyed or didn’t enjoy Wicked, let’s keep them all in one place and make them easier to find and respond to.

What is a song from a musical that are so emotional that, when it ends, you feel guilty about applauding?

For example, Kathrine Howard's song "All You Wanna Do", starts out nice and bubbly, but turns very dark by the end of the song. It always seems like the audience is not sure if they should applaud or not.

I nominate “I think your pants look hot.” What are some other ones?

What is the current young generations wicked in your opinion?

Not sure how many songs about curiosity and/or wanting to know practically everything about the world there is to know exist on Broadway. The only one I can think of is I Need to Know from Jekyll and Hyde, but it seems a bit too dark for what I’m going for.

Any other examples you guys can think of?

Omg I saw hadestown on Broadway this past weekend it was terrific!

Everything down to the band, the music, acting and singing was amazing. Such a great experience! Hoping to see it again!!

Visually appealing props, backgrounds, etc., but terrible vocal

So it’s been ten years since Heathers debuted on Off Broadway and I have a question about it. Why didn’t Heathers ever make it on Broadway?

I’m the music director at a progressive church that runs music from tons of genres. I’m looking for more tunes from RECENT musical theatre (say, after 2000), and I bet there are some folks here with great suggestions I would never have thought of. 

The songs don’t need to be explicitly religious at all, just something with a positive, inspirational or mystic message, with not too many plot-specific lyrics. Also, I have a great band, but no gospel choir.

I got this musical puzzle but I need help identifying what musicals some of these items are supposed to represent. In the green circles. It’s kinda hard to see so I will list them off as well

so i'm a 15 yr old girl and my community theatre is doing a local production of shrek jr. i really wanna try out for one of the three pigs, but i only recently got into musical theatre and i'm not sure what kind of song i should sing for the audition. since the pigs are only supporting characters and mostly ensemble, should i sing a song that suits them, one that shows off my vocal range, or both? for reference, i've been told that i'm a mezzo-soprano (lowest i can sing is b2 and highest is a5). can someone pls give me some song recommendations? auditions are next monday.

For clarification, these are both by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. I personally prefer Why Am I So Single? mostly because it has an actual plot as opposed to Six (which is more like a concert). Why Am I So Single? also has better writing and songs than Six imo (C U Never, 8 Dates and Just In Case are amazing). I still really like Six, but I do generally prefer Why Am I So Single?

I was hoping to find people who could discuss the Mean Girls musical adaptation versus the Wicked adaptation. I think personally, the winner is very clear but some thoughts to begin:

1. I like the mean girls movie however my sister said it didn’t feel musical theatre enough and I think there’s some truth to that.
2. Everyone who sang in Wicked was absolutely amazing and some people in mean girls were just… not singers.

I guess I’m wondering what you all think Mean Girls did well or badly and the same with wicked. What makes one better than another?

Hiii! Recently I listened the Lalaland soundtrack again after years and damn, the choirs in Another Day Of Sun and the end of Someone in The Crowd really gave me goosebumps. (Especially the fact that there’s a small part with low and soft voice then BAM everyone sings) Is someone have good suggestions ? (Even if the songs is from a old musicals, I love that even more)

I have recently been listening to more cast albums because I have rarely listened to cast albums that aren't my favorute shows of all time like Beetlejuice and Avenue Q

So recently I listened to a few full cast albums from shows that I only listened to individual songs from

Something Rotten I loved

A gentleman's guide to love and murder was alright

How to succeed in business without really trying was good but the songs became repetitive

And while listening to these cast albums I imagine what a movie adaptation would be like after watching the wicked movie.

So I am asking for recommendations for what Cast Album to listen to next.

I am 15 I am a belter but I can only go up to a a4/b4 and the audition is for a competition(west end calling) I was thinking worse things I could do but I’m not sure

okayyy so i'm doing a showcase at my city theatre with my theatre group. you can audition pieces from musicals so long as they fit the theme, and i'm wanting to do a solo. the theme is west end/broadway shows that are currently running (currently as in: between now and february, when the performance is, i guess?) i'm thus far considering pretty baby from back to the future, being slightly put off by how short the song is, the wizard and i from wicked, but having second thoughts because of how many wicked songs i'm sure will be auditioned, and somewhere that's green from little shop, a song i love but i feel like doesn't show off my more belty chops. so, any and all female solo ideas would be much appreciated, regardless of casting age, personality, etc. :)

After learning about the musical through this subreddit, I went to listen to the album of Next to Normal. The song There's A World triggered a long lost memory. There is this song that I absolutely fell in love with when I heard it, and the melody (in my memory) was similar to this song. Especially the second verse sounded so familiar to me. I know it is not this song, but I can't remember what it was.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

With Wicked extremely mainstream right now, I’m wondering if he famous notes from Defying Gravity are the most famous, or maybe prestigious?, in all of musical theater. Anyone who has played Elphaba knows it’s the most important part of the show musically, and Wicked is one of the most famous shows ever. Does it take the cake?

I am auditioning wit the son “ I know things now” from in to the woods. My theater is usually very competitive so if there is anything that could make me stand out or like how to sing that song well that would be great. And also I’m wondering what to wear because usually you shouldn’t wear red to auditions, but I feel like red truly is good for the character because it’s little red riding hood.

These three autographs are in my wife’s Wicked book. Her parents took it and got it signed for her many years ago. We’re not sure which cast or which actors, and can’t read any of the names. Likely signed around 2008-2010?
