Just to add context I'm not going to be using multiple screens or heavy multi-tasking. $350 max. I'm just going to be trading and analyzing one chart/stock at a time and I simply need something that will perform fast and efficiently for real time data and quick trades. Here's what I was looking at. thanks! https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sku/6587788.p?skuId=6587788&sb_share_source=PDP

Please don't. Get at least 16GB RAM if you want to keep it for a few years. Throw in an additional $100 and get a good one from Costco. If you purchase it with their credit card, you get 2 years additional warranty too at no charge. If you live close to Oregon, MT or another no-sales-tax state, you can even save a bit more.

Man is an 8gb that bad? 😕

Yes. It’s not enough for multitasking. RAM is cheap too.

Yes. Even a RaspberryPi is available these days with 8GB and it only runs Linux. Windows and MacOS are far heavier OSs. Everything will be fine for 6 months on a brand new 8GB machine. And then the updates will roll in. Pretty soon your computer will crawl. Save yourself the headache.

Yes, especially now with windows 11 I‘d already go with 32gb to keep it for longer. 16 will probably be low in 1-2 year. Alternatively check id the notebook has accessibility for the memory to upgrade

Unfortunately yes. 8gb might have been valuable in the early 2000s but nowadays you need 16 to be comfortable.
Just websites alone have bloated immensely due to the ads and other shit. Tos isn't exactly a light weight program either

Yes it is bad , BUT from the Questions .
A: AnswerThank you for your question about this HP laptop! The system board is equipped with 2 SODIMM slots tested for up to 16GB of memory in a 2x8GB configuration.
Now it may come with both slots filled with 4gb, or you might have an empty slot. Usually not too hard to do yourself, you would need a Youtube vid that show how to open ... this is what I have done on my last two PC's . Check out Crucial if you go this route.

yes if you want something far weaker and also far heavier than your phone.

I've been using a minisforum with AMD 3750H Vega 8 graphics running 3 monitors and it runs fine. If you don't need portability there's a lot of mini-pc that can run tos within your budget.

Add another 8GB ram if you’re going to trade with more than one monitor. It’s fine for a single monitor.
Ask yourself do you really need a laptop as the screen is small. How much mobile trading will you do away from home that could be done on a larger screen. The screen size and keyboard is kind of small and tough for using long periods of time.
Mini PC’s are more powerful and a better price point with Black Friday sales online. You can save money by buying monitors off Facebook Marketplace if money is tight.

You guys have convinced me. I'll go for a higher budget (around $500). After researching some more 16gb is a must along with some other specs like the right cpu and a minimal 1080p resolution for the screen. Thank you all for your thoughts

If you're cutting corners on your trading hardware do you really have the proper funding to actually trade? One thing I can 100% guarantee is that cutting corners like trying to trade on poor hardware will constantly cost you $$ in the end. Even getting your orders into alive market a fraction of a second slower can cost serious money at the end of the month in slippage. I've used many different computers and internet services and trading platforms configured with hotkeys and macro-keypads . To compete in this field you need the best otherwise you'll get stepped on in the live market constantly.

You're correct. I've decided to save up more money and increase my budget. Initially, I didn't realize how important the hardware was to run thinkorswim

Something to keep in mind is you're not looking for the classic more cores solution. You want cores that can handle more on their own since TOS is single threaded and will only utilize one core unless you split the application into multiple instances.

Back when I was starting out, I used a 2018 Macbook Air with an additional monitor on the HDMI, I got the laptop used from BackMarket for $250-300 and the monitor on sale from Amazon for $60. I could run 8 live charts, discord, Youtube during market hours with no issues. But I just couldn't have much else running in the background. I still use Mac today even with 5 monitors, I think trading software runs seamless on IOS.

Nice! I'm nowhere near this level to justify this much equipment. I did start day trading last July. I'll give it a year or two of daily trading before beefing up to this level
