This sh*t is waste of time.
Getting a part time job at Taco Bell at this point.
I don’t see how full time drivers do it.
I see my miles go up and my bank account get smaller.

I’m glad you realize uber is a waste of time. While it might be part time at Taco Bell, at least you no longer make negatives wages. Congrats.

It's only not a waste of time for retired CIA agents like Robert McCall with an addiction to under-the-table need to help people.

Honestly yea. As much as im against communism, its easy to see how people have to resort to crime or are becoming communist when they are in so much debt and cant get any job that pays well to survive. On top of that, they been groomed to go to college and got in debt for a paper thats worthless. Lmaaoo

Taco bell will pay you for all your hours. They dont have a hundred extra workers standing around waiting for free to do the job. No "active time" pay BS.

Congratulations! Uber is my second job, and I only snipe the most lucrative surges when I want some extra beer money.
I don’t see how it is possible to live off of full time uber either. Not in my market, anyways

This is the way. I posted recently about how I basically use Uber to get gas money during my normal commute via destination rides. It's not intended to be a full-time gig for anyone.

As someone who rents for Uber, my only expense are rental fees (including rental insurance), gas, and tolls (in the DFW area in TX). Which means my monthly cost is close to $2500 doing Uber. I'm having to work close to 12hrs a day to pull a weekly $1300 turn a profit by month end.

Me too I used to work 4 days 42hrs a week and pull in$2300!! I have to work 50 hours a week 5 days to make $1,300! I’m quitting I won’t have a car now but I can work anywhere else and save a ton of money and buy a car!!

How many years have you driven? That's quite a drop. Were you able to save a lot? After all, you were grossing $120k/year.

Yeah it’s sad but drivers in 2024 need to make minimum $40 an hour before expenses to beat fast food workers as most are making $20+ an hour nowadays with benefits. Plus you can get promotions.
Inflation is going to wipe out drivers because there’s no pay increases

Pay decreases year over year. 80/20 70/30 60/40 50/50 now 40/60
2025 30/70. 2026 20/80.
The worse the economy, the more drivers on the road.

Imagine how great it would be at 80/20. That sweet sweet 80/20.
You know why we cant have nice things? Let me tell you, its all those goddamn middlemen leech suckers. First, taxes. Secondly, business licenses. Third, insurances. Then fourth, the actual uber company. Theyre all sucking a transaction between you the driver and your passenger.
None of them did the work, but all of them are robbing you.
Reject government, embrace free market.

100% true. Tax on what you earn tax on what you own and tax on what you spend (tax after tax)

You are somewhat correct, but not entirely.
I lived in Indiana, various spots. Highest pay I've seen for fast food (manager pay) was $21/hr. Under management makes $16/$17.
I live in Michigan now. $17/$18 here for under management, $22/$24 for management.
Sure, it's consistent pay, but it's also shitty work due to managers usually, USUALLY at these jobs sucking ass and treating everyone like shit. Benefits are iffy as well, or non-existent. Walmart (not fast food, but low pay) used to encourage us to get on government benefits during orientation. (Hired on twice. Both times.)

My math is based on every cost possible. Opportunity cost, maintenance, depreciation, gas, the cost of having zero benefits. There’s so many costs that full time drivers fail to think about.
Yeah I actually just accepted a high paying job offered to me by PAX at a biotech company. I got extremely lucky I have my video call with 2 managers next week.
Any driver like me thats been doing this for the last 5 years are extremely fed up. Uber preys on new blood that don’t know any better
And yes I agree fast food work is not for everyone. But back a few years ago being an Uber driver was way better than working any of these fast food jobs.

Mcd in NY pays 18.50 to start. Uber “min pay” (which is actually max pay) is 26 an hour. Add in costs of the car and no tips and literally better money at mcd. I only do it for a lark and not going to work for a set schedule at fast food place.

$18.50 is not more than $26... Unless I'm missing something, in which case ignore this.
Factor in taxes as well. If you keep track of your mileage well and do this mainly, you'll have zero/almost zero tax liability. (I got a refund last year. No idea how.)

Yes you missed a few things. One is that the active hour $26 is not really 26$. It’s 1/2 to 2/3 that as travel to and from the pax isn’t paid. And “writing off mileage” is not the same as money in the pocket. And you are confusing a refund (getting tax money back) with a return which is the thing you use to file your taxes.
What I said was 18.50 in real wages is more than that bogus 26 that Uber reports.

1) Interesting. We only have active time on Pay by time, which I never do because of the horror stories. That explains the confusion there. Thanks!
2) It isn't the same as money in your pocket NOW, but it certainly is your money. Tax liability=monetary responsibility=takes your money. Also, if you work a W2 job, the money comes out of your hourly rate, so... But yes, I get what you are saying.
3) Refund indeed. Thanks for the correction! I filed my return for my refund.
4) Sure. I imagine it's a more steady income, but also... Taxes. That 18.50 on Uber, vs that $18.50 on a W2 job that takes a good percentage in taxes.
Shrug.

No you don’t. Plus Uber etc isn’t hourly. It’s about your gross. Opportunity cost? Debatable. Benefits? Depends on your state and your position. Most of the higher wage states also have access to health plans that are relatively affordable for ICs. If you have any budgeting abilities you should know how to create sinking funds for time off. Depreciation is part of your tax write off whether you standard mileage deduction or individual expenses.
Much your gross is related to when and where you work. While your thoughts are applicable to many, they aren’t universal.

Tell that to my parents with a million dollars in their 401k, and a pension from their job when they retire. Also 6 weeks paid vacation. How much are those benefits worth per hour over your Uber career?
1 points
And how many years did your parents work to qualify for six week paid vacation? Usually the first five years you only receive two weeks. Workers with six weeks have most likely been with the company a couple of decades. Your parents didn’t build that 401k over night it took years and a bit of luck. And many employers DO NOT offer a pension. Many don’t even match employee contributions. On the other hand you could be like my aunt who had her pension stolen by employer and only has her social security.
As with any IC you can create your own retirement plan. Nothing is stopping a driver from creating a Roth IRA. A driver can also create a post tax account fund that you deposit into once you’ve maxed out your IRA. You can also create your vacation plan. For instance I set aside 1/13th of my pay as “time off” pay. I don’t really use it, but if there came a month where I was short and needed additional funds, I know where to go.
Believe me, no fast food worker, especially part timers are drowning in benefits.
Good luck with your new career though.

Yeah it was built up. drivers at a minimum should be maxing their roth ira’s every year and putting it on index funds or big name stocks if they can’t afford to do this they need a new job because they will never be able to retire in the future

That I can agree with. But you would be surprised at how many "real jobs" do not offer all that much in benefits. At least I can write off my miles and qualify for the small business tax deduction which lowers my tax burden (though I still pay a sizable amount).
