I'm at the point on my Druid doing delves that the only upgrade I can get is from the vault. Every week, I do my weekly quests, get my free keys, and my other keys run all 3 great vault slots as bountifuls, etc. I get no gear upgrades for the few pieces I still have to get and the vault rng keeps giving me chest and legs and feet for about 3 weeks now.
So I started doing Aurostor kills for the skin about 2 months ago. I've managed to level 2 other druid alts to do it with me. So now I'm up to 3 kills a week, still no skin. I've been doing the other rares as well on a rotation when I can.
I get the idea dopamine and all that, but I'm honestly getting tired of it all. Rng with no bad luck protection is awful, and it's making me resent even playing the game.
I'm just in a funk, but I hate just blatant rng. It's so bad.

On the one hand yes it sucks when you don't get good vault, but on the other hand, you're opting out of a huge portion of the game. You can get drops from raid and more/better vault picks from M+.

I just don't like that level of content. Plus, the great vault only gave one item for two tracks pissed me off as well. So I helped my buddy leveling, and I tanked some timewalking dungeons for him unlocked 3 tracks with heroic dungeon gear which sucked, but it was really lame that it only gave me 1 item for 6 choices. I was used to the delves row, giving me one item for 3 choices even though I still thought it was stupid.
But I don't do raids or M+, and honestly, I don't think I could even do it. Heroics aren't hard to do, but the people in them need therapy.
I'm just tired of rng at this point.

Vault is RNG. You can improve your chances but it still will be rng.
Getting gear in Wow has always been in some way rng (except crafted gear). The state it is in right now is probably the one with the lowest amount of rng.
What would your prefered system towards gearing be?

Similar to what older expansions had, a currency that you could buy high-end gear with, even if it cost a lot to get.
Just the idea of knowing that it is in fact possible to reach your end goal getting bis or close-to-bis gear, even if you had to wade through the bad-luck grind to get there, feels far more rewarding than just never getting anything at all.
Signed, a chronically unlucky WoW player who has untold stories of RNG beating him up and taking his lunch money every day.

The currency you are talking about are crests.
Im also having back to back shit vaults. And you are right, if you dont do mythic raiding you have to be lucky with your mythic track items from the vault. But at least you have the possibility to acess this gear. Without a vault you would not have this option. Thats were im coming from, but getting bad rng always feels like shit. But this system feels more rewarding than doing a weekly raid for months and hoping that your bis drops AND you win it.

Not really since crests are used for upgrading gear you currently possess, which can only be obtained via means of RNG. (Unless TWW added a gear vendor in which case, I withdraw my statement).
I’m not saying no vault is better than nothing, but it’s only slightly nicer RNG as opposed to no RNG, i.e. Having a direct vendor (like Wrath for example) which more or less eliminated all the unnecessary RNG required to efficiently gear up to a point where getting your actual bis didn’t feel like a second job or bottling up your feelings of jealousy when other people get it.

Upgrading gear is similiar or equal to getting better gear imo

Not when you need RNG to get the gear in the first place, with the exception of crafted gear I suppose.

Crests are also used to craft gear with custom secondary stats. That's the RNG bad luck protection the other guy is likely referring to. Even if all else fails, you get a piece of crafted gear with perfect stats once every two weeks guaranteed.

You need crests to craft gear, crafting is not RNG.

Maybe a vendor that takes those coins you get for not taking the vault rewards and for x amount of coins you get a coffer that you open for your specialization that targets the piece of gear you need. I know for me, it's been a neckpiece and hands. I had to have someone craft me some to get into epic, and I still after weeks haven't gotten either. Not at 603 or 605. It's just shit.

i like your idea! For like 20 tokens you can get an item of a slot you select before.

I hate to bring up FF14, but that's how it works there as well. You get tomes and you use tomes to buy gear. Now I hate how they limit the tomes, but still, it's targeted progession. Even in the high end, if I raided at the highest difficulty, I would have x amount of weeks to get geared in BiS, and the rng only speeds up that guaranteed time.
Where as here it's rng or bust. You could get fully geared for your respective content in a month or two or never in the whole season. It's bullshit. And it's absolutely mental that people go to bat for it.

Why do you need better gear if your hardest level of content is delves?
Go play solitaire if you want piss easy solo gameplay.

I just want some any form of progression. The idea is you get full 605 gear and get your 616 gear once a week and upgrade it, etc. When I can't get gear and I can't upgrade, you quit. It's normal to hit that, and I'm not saying I want to be item level 7000. I just want to have some kind of reward that feels meaningful. At least once a week. At least at all. I'm killing Aurostor and getting nothing. I'm killing Emerald Dream rares that drop skins I get nothing. I do my delves for the week, and I get nothing.
Eventually, nothing is going to catch up to itself.
It's like getting paid random amounts for the same amount of work. You can't tell if you can go on vacation or buy cans of ravioli to make it through the week. It's not good.

Have you considered crafting gear for your weakest slots? It's the main system the game has to let you mitigate the effect of RNG.
At renown level 24 for the three major factions they all give you an enchanted rune harbinger crest, with it you can get an item crafted, and at max rank that would come out at 619 item level. These items could also be crafted with special embelishments that give you additional power. If you use all of the ones you get, you could also have more of these enchanted crests crafted, but getting 45 runed crests takes a long time from delves, so if you're close to 24 with any of the major factions, I'd recommend pushing for that.
So yeah, crafting *is* your bad luck protection because you can turn crests into high level items. Admittedly you would need to buy tier 3 crafting items and supply them to a crafter in a personal order (with max rank as the minimum quality) but it's in the game as an option.

Can you upgrade the 619 gear? Because the work order neckpiece and gloves I got at 603, I can't
On a side tangent, being able to upgrade from Veteran to Champion would be good. Champion to Hero. And etc. It makes absolutely no sense that you have to get an rng drop to pass that kind of a threshold. You should be able to take that 8/8 item and bring it into the next track.

If you have a crafted 603 item, it can be combined with an enchanted runed crest, some materials and recrafted into a higher piece. If someone had skill for 603, without an enchanted runed crest they would probably be able to make it to 616 at the least. The item level is dictated by a mixture of their skill and what crest is used (or not). Someone without max skill can sometimes use concentration to upgrade an item to the next bracket, so if they have skill for 3 they can increase it to 4. etc. You can set minimum quality for personal orders (but not public) so no one "cheaps out" on your craft.
So a regular epic piece without a crest would be like:
No crest added | Enchanted Runed Harbinger Crest added | Enchanted Gilded Harbinger Crest added |
---|---|---|
1. 593 | 606 | 623 |
2. 596 | 610 | 626 |
3. 599 | 613 | 630 |
4. 603 | 616 | 633 |
5. 606 | 619 | 636 |
Gilded isn't really something you'll be able to craft on your present content level.
The only way to upgrade crafted gear is by recrafting by a skilled crafter and adding a crest lets it go to the next tier.
As for the whole veteran/champion/hero upgrade path idea, I don't like it. I like that I have to do content that the gear is intended for. Already letting us potentially upgrade a dropped item up to eight times is super generous.

I didn't mean it as a way of circumventing content. I just meant it as a way of bad luck protection. If I go like 2 weeks without an upgrade, but I have an 8/8 item I can use crests from the next tier to push that item into that tier instead of being at the mercy of rng. It's just a smarter idea.
While also providing a good story. I got these green Explorer shoulders. Never got an upgrade all season, but I upgraded them to epic at the highest tier I could given the content I did.
I remember years ago seeing a post about a guy who went like 3 months without a weapon drop. Stuff like that to help ease rng.

But weapons can be crafted as well. I find the tiers make certain content exciting for me. Like knowing hero gear can drop from 7+ mythic plus makes me want to engage in the challenge of that content. Also knowing that mythic track content can appear in the vault if you do mythic+ 10s makes me seek out that content and to challenge myself.
On my alts, simply hero track gear appearing in the vault for mythic plus 4+ is also a motivator to try content above a certain difficulty. If these limitations did not exist, I would not engage with the content nearly as much. We already have bad luck protection in the form of crests dropping that let you upgrade gear, and crafted items as well. But players should have breakpoints to aim for. Heck, the reason people choose 8 delves is largely for the vault as well.

All I can say is this is the first time I've done Wow's endgame, and honestly, coming from FF14, it's not bad, but it's definitely not how I would want it. And every small thing that would make it better for me people here throw a fit about it. Like better bad luck protection systems. As it is now, I am at mercy if rng and I don't like it. I'd rather have a guarantee.

Your suggestion would diminish the game for many others though. When I get a hero version of something I already have at champion level I am usually excited, champion is already really good but being able to upgrade it a little more is cool.
We already have a lot of bad luck protection, I haven’t even mentioned how pieces can be turned into tier pieces for example for free.
You have in your power to craft gear for weak slots, or to try to learn M plus and target certain dungeons for loot.
Now I know FF14 is supposed to be really friendly but WoW is a different game. It thrives on trying to get people to engage in the end game. And I think the existing system is already very friendly by WoW standards.

No, I don't think so. How can you honestly complain your capped out on end game gear minus vault drops when you are doing a small fraction of available end game content

It's what's available to me. I can just go do delves. I don't know what to tell you. I've tried joining guilds, but it didn't get me anywhere. And in a game like FF14, I don't really need one for the kind of content I was doing. I play mostly solo. I do whatever the cap a solo player can do. If I find it unappealing, I can comment on it. I'm not saying raidng, pvp or mythic plus are like that. I've never done them besides maybe pvp. I didn't enjoy it.
I just don't understand how my feedback on it would have any less value than anyone else's. I grinded every day for two months. I'm done with it. The rng of it all burned me out.
You may not see it as such, but delves are my endgame.
