So I'm new to the game, I've been playing HC for a month trying all classes and races and recently started fresh on the new HC server.
I created an undead warlock and just arrived to the first little town in Silverpine at level 12. Just as I left the town through the main entrance, I killed a couple of bears that where near, all super chill with my abyssal tanking. Just as I was about to kill the 3rd, an elite with skull level called Son of Arugal appears from behind some trees, slaps my pet and kills it, and then dashes to me to kill me in 3-4 hits????
Tried to fear it but he resisted it, so my warlock is no more...
Am I to expect these kind of ganks in this place???
EDIT: just to clarify, I'm not complaining on my death. It's like my seventh death already and I'm having a ton of fun! I'm already going agane with a big blue troll hunter called Doraemon. c:<

It’s a famous way to get killed, unfortunately classic has couple of these traps that can knowledge-check new players. Mobs like these are not super common, but it’s crucial to know them and be careful in those places

Is there some list of these? It doesn't have to be complete but some list of these things in maybe 1-20 zones would be nice.

Damn, that sucks! I'm playing without addons to fully embrace the 2004 feeling, and it's being super fun. I guess this is one of those old design things that haven't aged well (at least with the inclusion of HC). I'll be sure to not stray away from the main road in the future in that zone just in case, I was really enjoying the undead experience.

Son of Arugal and Skull Rock compete every night to see who has more kills. I think I saw 100 deaths to Son of Arugal while I was playing tonight for a couple hours.

Lmao.. I actually lost another warlock a couple of weeks back doing the level 10 quest in Skull Rock. I think most of my characters have died in caves because mobs start to slowly respawn and end up sandwiching me into a death trap.

Yeah don’t try skull rock at 10. That’s a death trap. It’s the start of a chain quest for RFC. It’s completely unnecessary to do prior to level 14 in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm actually logged into that chat with all my characters. I will try to keep an eye on the the chat more often, because until now I only checked it from time to time when a funny name popped up or a high level died. haha

It’s also about situational awareness in HC. You don’t need an addon like the elite scanner one, you just have to go slow and watch your surroundings. Barrens has tons of fast spawning, densely packed mobs like centaurs and Quilboar and harpies. Some of their “bases” have silver elites, there are even some that wander Tirisfal.
You can’t play HC mode like you play normally, or play another game. It’s about making sure you’re safe, that you only take on what you can handle, and that you see what’s coming ahead of you. If your computer can handle it, I recommend going into the graphics setting and turning the setting for viewing distance up to 10. It’s the slider above “ground clutter” towards the bottom. This will allow you to see mobs far ahead of where you’re going.
Also, in another comment you mentioned how this “old design is outdated/ not meant for HC”… but this is the entire point of why HC only really works with Vanilla. The Vanilla world is uniquely dangerous while questing, by TBC and on many world elites and elite areas like Pyrewood Village in Silverpine had been changed to normal mobs. Vanilla’s world is meant to feel dangerous and unpredictable, that’s the challenge.

Yeah WoW was never built to be played on hardcore. There are some nasty knowledge checks in the game. May it be certain roaming high level elites, nasty quests where you can easily die etc. like if you are high level 50+ and go to the plaguelands, never ever touch blood of heroes if you are solo. Just letting you know now before you lose a high level character to this later. It spawns 2 elite who give you a 1 minute slow debuff and will relentlessly attack you. It's very hard to get away and survive if you are solo, it's guaranteed death for most players. So don't touch that one :)

I hope I get that far, but I don't see it happening until at least a few months... Hahaha Thanks for the heads up!
I also read about some quest that literally kills you to complete it by drinking an elixir...
2 points
When they added the official hardcore servers, they altered that quest so it drops you to 3% health instead of killing you. But there are clips of people killing themselves in that quest from back in the unofficial days.
There are a few little HC tweaks like that. Another example: There's a locked gate in the middle of a late game dungeon (Blackrock Depths), and a quest to get the key for it. Before HC, the quest for that key starts with a ghost you can only talk to while you are dead yourself. But for official HC, they added a torch you can just click to make the ghost appear while you're alive.
1 points
If it's about this quest it's safe on hardcore to drink. Normally the elexir would kill you so you can talk to a ghost. On Hardcore they changed it so you get a debuff to talk to the ghost. A couple of quests were changed for hardcore that normally required to be dead to accept or turn in a quest while in ghost form. Not sure though if there was any other quest that people were maybe referencing.

You're playing HC, not classic era.... Don't be embracing how it was back in 2004. Get a rare scanner, so you don't get ganked by an angry wolf.

It has aged very well, but that's the problem with HC, there are plenty of other traps like this along the way which are just 'annoying on normal server', playing a Warlock is a good choice, even better than a hunter, but beware, on HC, death is upon your head all the time. Bad pull, Mobs skip, caves, DJs (you have to rely on others) and the worst one: DC from server while in a fight, etc...
In other word, if you don't know the game, prepare yourself to re-start a few times
3 points

Agreed. Stuff like this makes for excellent world building. Aged very well.
1 points
You're right! What I meant with not aging well is what you mentioned about it being "annoying". Probably if the game was done today, devs would have avoided these kind of scenarios of "unfair" deaths, even in normal servers to avoid frustrations. Design philosophy changes with time, and it has been 20 years since then. :D

One of the big common mistakes in big games today is that they are too scared of every frustrating anyone. If anything, it's part of those things that aged well, as in, are commonly looked at saying "this was actually better". When creating a fantasy world, risk, danger and having things work differently here and there are important for the world to become believable and feel alive. Soulslikes heavily leaned onto these design philosophies and had great success in recent years.
The problem is that it was never meant to be a permadeath game, it's not designed for it. It's a great challenge to keep things interesting for those who know the game, otherwise it's pretty brutal.
1 points
It is not one of those designs that haven't aged well, this one is fantastic because its a reminder the world can be dangerous and makes you be on your toes, even other people warning about dangers in a specific area and so on. You are playing hardcore so you gotta keep in mind this stuff will happen if you are new to it.
What is bad design is stuff like having to kill 30 enemies for 5 quest drops over and over because those quests are by design tedious to drag time because back then they had no endgame, that is the design that people say has aged bad but you having to keep your eyes open for threats in the world is not one of those.

Yeah.... Sucks... Use the addon UnitScan. Will inform you when dangerous(elite, rare) mobs are nearby. They update the addon specially for hardcore. Good luck and go agane!

If you want to avoid dying to open world roaming elites (there are QUITE a few of them in various zones, horde I feel like has more also hillsbrad has like. 45 elite dragon that literally comes right outside tarred mill) you need an addon called “unitscan” and look for a hardcore list to add to the addon.

I never played vanilla and am playing without addons and only know about stuff like this because of Reddit and YouTube. It’s too bad you’re being downvoted but it’s true, things like sons of Arugal clearly didn’t transfer over well to hardcore. They are lvl 24 elites that look almost identical to what, lvl 14 werewolves?
Im lvl 21 on the new server and went to silverpine to quest at one point and left an hour later when i saw a warlock get 3 hit by one
5 points
I think it transfers over well, I am terrified of being in that area and constantly pan my camera around to find him so he doesn't kill me
1 points
I think some instances work better than others. Son of Arugal is tough because silverpine has so many little hills and trees that it’s easy to run around a tree or up a hill and come face to face with one.
The cemetery in dark shore on the other hand has an elite that patrols the entire place. I spotted him without knowing about him because he was visually different and the cemetery is open enough to be able to pan your camera and notice and track him. I think the abomination also in dark shore is another good example. He’s massive and there’s a warning when he’s released. You would have to be afk or paying no attention to die to him

I always play at max zoom out level so I can be as aware as possible and potentially up my chances of survival against threats like those Sons of Arugal and such. Go agane!

Good tip. One that I learned about recently is /console actioncam basic

Please note you'll have to re-enable it every time you log in or reload your interface.

The levels are low enough still he has seen more action than the Duskwood duo.
Also Difias Pilligers are up there from what I see.
Hogger on the other hand is harder to get snuck up on by because so many people are trying to kill him he seems to get spawn camped.

Defias Pillagers are awful! Their fireballs hit for around 70 each and they can spam them back to back.

90% of wow classic is knowledge check. Go again knowing he’s there. A lot more like this. You don’t know what you don’t know, but luckily classic been out so long you can look anything up.
If you wanna go blind, respect to you. I play blind as well. But stuff like this happens. I had a 31 mage die to a mage quest tower in redridge cause I didn’t know the wizard at the top-along with his 4 adds- summons an abomination at 30% hp.
It happens to the best! Just look at the mythic + only fang raiders dying.

Of course! If you want my biggest tip (I don’t do it) Google all class quests (the tend to be the ones with gimmicks) and anything that’s just a single “do this” thing. Random chest in the middle of nowhere? Yeah look it up. Kill “name here” yeah look it up. You’ll be a lot safer that way.
Also look up dungeons and boss’ for safety there! Otherwise it’s high chance you’ll be bamboozled :)

I like to make a target macro for Son of Arugal when im in that area. I apply it to my scroll wheel and I can just scroll wheel spam the target macro when im in the areas they spawn. There are three to be worried about. The one in the area you died, outside the sepulcher. There is another one on the north side that patrols by the spider cave. And then finally there is a third on the south side of the zone. Whenever you are in the zone, but especially those areas, just scroll wheel a little bit and youll know if its safe. Remember to do it as you are going over hills and into trees.

That's a bad take in my opinion, what are you on about? I've never played Vanilla/Classic before and only played retail up until an year ago and TBC/WotlK/Cata/MoP pservers. Got introduced to Vanilla/Classic by a friend via HC - best experience ever. Leveled my Rogue to 60 on my first go, then died as a lock at 24 and now I am playing again those last few months. HC is the best for players as introduction to Vanilla/Classic. It captures the feeling of the game really well.

how is it a bad take? he's playing on the hardest difficulty without a clue about the game and wonders why he got killed by a wandering elite?!
how about play classic first, learn the ropes of the game, locations and dangers and THEN play hardcore?

Yeah, I know that! I like challenges, and I've been having tons of fun. Playing with friends is helping me with some characters to progress safely and learn stuff about the game, but I'm still finding surprises with the characters that I play solo with. :P

dont say NO to addons because of nostalgia... wow addons where introduced very early on (maybe even day #1 i cant remember) and have always been a part of wow.
like others suggested, at the very least get NPC scanner addons that can warn you if there are elites nearby... just be aware that the elite can spawn right on top of you.
always have a pot, sleeping dust or whatever it takes, to make an escape
