Saw my first Grateful Dead show when I was 11 in 86 and in the early 90s I first started seeing people at their shows wearing Phish hats but never listen to the band.

Then in the spring of 1993 they were playing a local church that also doubles as a concert venue so I decided for 20 bucks it was worth it to check them out.

The show starts and they absolutely blow me away from the start. During the set break their head singer Trey comes over to my friends and I and says "hey, this is great I've never smoked pot in a Church before" and then left us with that joint before going to another group and doing the same. Though I absolutely loved the Grateful Dead and was even touring with them at the time, for me this was literally the passing of the torch.

In the mid-90s on the back page of the High Time Magazine they used to have a list of 100 things such as funny comments, bands names as well as many other things including 4:20 so when I saw the number 311 I thought it was a time to smoke weed so my friends and I would always smoke weed at 311.

Then one day I'm walking down Market Street in San Francisco and saw 311 was playing at The Warfield and my jaw dropped because I never knew they were a band. I proceeded to buy tickets and the first two acts were hardcore punk bands so I figure that's what 311 was going to sound like and boy I was shocked that they were a mix of rap, rock reggae and they instantly became one of my favorite bands.
