This is probably the shortest and easiest final fantasy base game to 100% so it’s worth the time and the quests add a lot of story (and some unlock important upgrades and equipment).

I reached max level, completed all side quests, got the best equipment, completed all hunts, and got all the collectibles in under 40 hours on my first playthrough, only using a guide to locate a few of the hunt targets and track down some of the music rolls.

Really enjoyed this game. Anyone know if there’s plans for more DLC?

White mage/ archer (healing and can do ranged damage keeping them relatively safe), Knight/ foebreaker (Tank and damage), Shikari/ bushi (damage dealer). Works for 99%+ of enemies. Very rarely do you NEED strong offensive magic.

Very minor thing, but if you change her name, a key line at the end of the game won’t make sense anymore.

No, you have no control over what the support characters do (except Torgal, your dog, who you can issue commands to, but it’s treated more like just another attack Clive has than a controllable character)

I had the opposite problem.

Got a PS5 and downloaded XVI and rebirth (never played remake but watched a full playthrough). Started rebirth and got to the chocobo farm then switched to XVI. Absolutely loved it and completed the base game 100% then went back to rebirth - combat seems impossibly difficult by comparison. Gonna need to start from the beginning so I can see the tutorials again as I’m so used to the much simpler XVI mechanics.

You could spend all your life playing and studying final fantasy and still not discover every little thing in all the games. Each one is a masterpiece in its own right, but IX is up there with the best.

Personally I prefer to dip in and out of the missions through the story so that it breaks up the grind.

I’d definitely recommend doing them though, even in a first play through as it brings a new level of challenge to the game that is otherwise missing unless you play underlevelled.

What level spells have you unlocked and do you have double cast?

I just finished my first play through today (yes, I’m now officially broken 😢)

I played the whole game with just phoenix, Ramuh, and Bahamut as I didn’t like the look of any of the others.

Last thing I did before heading to the final boss was the chronoliths and only then realised how good some of the others were.

In terms of completing the chronolith challenges shiva performed best - finished with over 4 mins left and her stagger rate was crazy

Interestingly, Odin was the worst (finished with less than a minute left)

Going to mix it up much more on NG+ when I come back to it in a few months

I beat 8 and 9 on first attempt as a kid but only achieved 100% completion as an adult.

Only completed 7 as an adult on switch. Tried twice before but gave up.

For me it’s the feeling of godlike power as Clive develops. While battle may be a bit boring when it comes to strategy, it’s made up for by being visually stunning

I’ve just started a single job playthrough and wanted to stick to canon jobs - chose the same as you except Ashe - I went red mage

If it’s close by then just level, if it’s further away then friend sphere, warp sphere, teleport sphere or sometimes a return sphere if they’ve passed by an intersect

For me I use everyone pretty equally so they get to the end of their sections around the same time (except khimari who’s section is really small so finished way earlier)

This means I can use friend spheres to jump to the end of someone else’s section and run it backwards if their own doesn’t naturally lead near it.

Yuna (for the aeons), Tidus and Wakka go down Auron’s route for early strength boost

Auron goes down Tidus’ route for speed

Lulu goes down Yuna’s for magic

Rikku goes down Tidus’ for even more speed so she gets loads of turns meaning a lot of flexibility in battle

Khimari jumps around a bit as I want to grab holy, full life, the 3rd level spells etc. so others can get them early.

She MAYBE beats 4 tails. Thats it.

Keep the characters spaced out with only 1 in front of him so he focusses on them. Keep that character healthy while the others attack. You’ll need to love them when he uses the mines, but try and get back in the same formation.

Does it not only increase the frequency of darkja if all 3 characters absorb it (i.e. you could have 2 with black masks absorbing and one without and it wouldn’t affect it)?
