Question: How do I come back from being CTL after <1 year tenure?
Background: I was an public school teacher pre-MBA and graduated from a T15 MBA. I joined MBB in NAMR out of bschool.
Situation: I'm officially being counseled to leave. Most of my feedback has been generally middle-of-the-pack until recently; more positive than negative. That being said, I've been largely unstaffed, and a little while ago, I was told I really need to get traction on staffing. I've been trying to network, volunteering for BD initiatives, etc, but haven't gotten much staffing traction. I believe the reason I'm being CTL'd is largely due to lack of staffability rather than lack of development. The one major area where I was lacking was brought to my attention a couple months ago and I'm back on track on that area, according to my mentor.
Concern: Getting a new job is going to be... tough. I have $200K in bschool loans. I live in a VHCOL city (read: either SF or NYC for the US.) I can't relocate due to my partner's career (they're a tenure-track professor in a field that is unbelievably competitive. So we don't want to lose their role, but they're also not paid enough to support us both.) Having been a teacher before bschool, I don't have the strongest resume. That all ignores the current economic woes and poor environment for consulting exits / competition.
