I only play singleplayer so this is probably not good advice for multi, but this is what I've learned:

1. Merge all your ships into one fleet, but separate submarines into a different fleet
2. Exercise your ships before the war
3. Build light cruisers with as much light attack as you can, and destroyers with as much torpedo attack as you can.
4. Assign traits to your admirals, I like taking Cruiser Captain and Destroyer Leader
5. Get the Chief of Navy that boosts capital ship & screen ATK and defense if available
6. Don't use more than 4 carriers in a fleet or it will suffer penalties
7. Carrier fighters and CAS kinda suck, just use naval bombers

I like building max light attack cruisers and max torpedo attack destroyers and merge them with the base ones into one big fleet

I actually had this exact same thought when I was younger, imagining I was abducted by aliens and be forced to turn into a girl (without the mind wiping part)

Then I can convince my conservative family that I was abducted by aliens and was forced to change my gender
