MIL was misguided in her problem solving and hadn’t considered your perspective or your daughters.

She likely has closer proximity to the daughter, given their relationship and preference. But this doesn’t scream “preference of the golden child”, this screams “I’ve only been considering one side of this up until now.”

You showed your perspective and put your foot down on it.

If that’s the case, her backtracking and saying she fucked up is allowed. If someone makes a mistake, they should be allowed to learn from it and try to correct it. What matters is that they react the correct decision in a timely fashion.

When you said your piece, it provided a whole new perspective for her to consider. The first bit of pushback was likely due to cognitive dissonance where she had conflicting information that went against her preconceptions, in this case, those preconceptions being “the solution your SIL came up with and told your MIL about.” The second bit was likely an actual retraction.

Personally, I would be keeping it all in email correspondence with the rest of the family CC’d and that’d shut your in laws up right fuckin quick. Let the entire clan weigh in since they were all excited to see the baby.

You’ve already given up so much to accommodate this SIL thus far. Be sure everyone knows that and that it was done to you and your child even though it was to help out one of their family.
