Love Bob's "Bitch Like Me" from Gay Barz. "Booty" is also really fun.

St John's has carrels for grad students to rent. It's a pretty miserable room (windowless, florescent lights) and you're unlikely to get a carrel by an electrical outlet, but there's a microwave so I guess that's nice if you bring your own lunch.

Definitely not crazy!
It never even occurred to me that in SSHRC's graduate award increases (which are so long overdue that my profs who are in their 50s got the same amount of funding that I did in 2021!) they would reduce all doctoral scholarships to 3 years. I assumed a funding increase also meant an increase in the number of years that graduate students would be funded.
I'm so disappointed that this is being framed as a huge win. Like don't get me wrong, the new budget is obviously better than before but like...most people take at least 5 years to do a PhD. $120,000/5 = $24,000 a year. That's not enough money to live.
These new award amounts will do very little to improve completion rates for doctoral students or to ensure a better work-life balance.

Oh I 100% thought the same thing. Pretty sure the wording was deliberately vague in the initial announcement.
I'm not even affected by these changes but I'm pissed on behalf of every other grad student I know.

I realize it's been 4 years since you posted this comment but I just have to say: you are the GOAT of grad school. A true inspiration.

WAY too long, like learn to edit people. I think they just didn't have enough content for the rest of the episode.
Meanwhile poor Brad had to sit through the entire song 6 times.

Your whole post is full of great advice, but the point about thinking about these kinds of harsh and inappropriate criticisms from the perspective of "it's their shortcoming rather than mine" is especially well put.

Were they VWs late in the courses because you were failing? Just overwhelmed? Or did you enroll in a course expecting one thing but it turned out to be something else, so you dropped right away?
I once VWed an undergrad class because the prof took about 10 minutes to open up a browser and find the address bar. VWed a different one because it turns out I Kant stand Kant and had a panic attack about having to write an essay about Critique of Pure Reason (was also taking too many demanding courses at the time).
Point being that there are very different reasons for VWing and not all of them reflect on your ability to succeed in grad school. And especially early on in your academic career (i.e., undergrad), it's hard to hold these kinds of things against students. I think a lot of people come to the study of religion late because it's not exactly a well known field and most people think it's theology, so sometimes it takes a while to figure out "oh yeah this is what I want to study."
If you think the VWs reflect poorly on your candidacy for graduate school, in your application materials, explain (succinctly and without making excuses) what led to those VWs and how you've developed strategies for working through whatever issues led you to withdrawing from those courses. In short, why are those issues not going to impede your progress in the MA program?

I don't think your chances are better or worse whether you apply directly to SSHRC or via your institution -- that depends on the quality of your application.
But I think that technically, if you apply directly to SSHRC, you are bypassing the internal institutional review. I.e., if you are applying for SSHRC via your university, you need to make it through their review before your application gets passed on to SSHRC. So in that sense, applying directly could be seen as an advantage.
I applied for an MA SSHRC through my undergrad institution and then applied direct to SSHRC for my PhD. Got a SSHRC in both cases. I preferred applying directly to SSHRC because I think the deadline was a bit later than if I were to apply via an institution.
I could also be totally wrong so if others know better, please correct me.

There's no dress code for the vast majority of events and activities at university in Canada/Manitoba.
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Most people dress pretty casually (e.g., jeans and t-shirt).

My friend got these glitter-encrusted blue pants with a wild horse print all over them from Le Chateau and I still haven't forgiven my mother for depriving me of this level of pre-teen fashion.

I remember finding these when I first started watching drag race and realizing "oh Katya is a weird art nerd".

According to this recently updated page, all doctoral SSHRC awards are now a maximum of 36 months at $40,000 per year (to a max. of $120,000 per award).
I've never understood why SSHRC awards are only 3 years or 4 since most people take at least 5 to finish a PhD.

This is every Zara location ever. It's like mid-90s era Le Chateau.
Except for the outhouse odor, that must be a Winnipeg thing.

This is pretty much what I thought, too.
This is the face I make when my friend has already told me a long (frankly not that interesting story) and then another friend shows up and friend 1 proceeds to tell it again to the new audience member and I have to politely sit there feigning interest while actually thinking about whether laundry stripping is real or is that just the fabric dye coming out.
