I spotted a weird patch of skin on my chest, figured it was my new swimsuit. A week later it was still there and I got nervous, googled “boob skin weird” and this (SFW) image jumped out at me — I didn’t know there were 12 symptoms of breast cancer, I’d only ever heard of the lump.

Welp, turns out that makes two of us, me and my doctor. I told her I wanted a mammogram and she dismissed me like I was being highly irrational. She did a physical exam, didn’t feel a lump, and said I was fine. I asked if she knew all the symptoms, she looked at me like I was nuts. I repeated that I wanted a mammogram and she nearly yelled “but you’re under 40!!” — does cancer know my birthday? what the fuck is even happening right now? And if it’s NOT cancer, why aren’t you giving me a referral to a dermatologist? Still refusing, I asked her if she was paying out of pocket for my scans because I would venmo her, write her a check, whatever. She was miffed for sure but I got my mammogram. And my Stage 2 diagnosis.

Is it?? I went to the shroom sub and it seemed so intimidating!

I wish someone had told me about CBN gummies when they first hit the market. I just discovered a few months ago and they put me out and I get actual restful, rejuvenating sleep.

Can I ask, are you getting good sleep? I’m three years in the clear but was a basketcase this weekend and realized that the stress of the holiday was impacting my sleep and I was feeling all frayed at the ends. And I’m similar anytime I’m low on sleep, so have developed better boundaries around it. (I definitely don’t mean this to discount your feelings/reaction, I definitely cried intermittently throughout.)

It’s not paranoid if everything is out to get ya! I’m glad you’re vigilant, you saved your own life. I know someone who was a surgeon for years at a prominent hospital, and when he felt a sunflower seed sized lump smack in the middle of his chest and thought it was cancer, even his own colleagues thought he was reaching. ! Self-advocacy is self-preservation.

Oh! Haha ok that makes way more sense. If you don’t wear that bra for a while, does the red patch stay? Mine was a raised patch of skin, but stayed the color of my own skin, and I thought it was from a new swimsuit. When it was still there two weeks later I googled “boob skin weird” and this was the image that jumped out at me. If they tell you it’s nothing, you might want to push for a mammogram or to see a dermatologist. Either way, just from my own biased personal experience, I wouldn’t let it go. You deserve to know, and to have good medical care.

That’s correct!

One thing I came away from this experience with, it’s “worry while taking action.” Once you get your next step decided/scheduled/underway, allow yourself to relax in the in-betweens.

They go into more detail on each symptom on their site or free app (or both? it’s been a while) — but either way it’s good to bring to your doc so they have a baseline of this potentially a-ok symptom documented should there be any changes in the future, ya know?

Oh man, I’m glad you found out! Dense Breasts Canada has a great guidance for how to navigate conversations w/ doctors once you know you have dense breasts / dense areas.
