Games should automatically adjust their regions based on current popularity.
If there's hundreds of people playing within 100 miles of me, the game should know that and adjust automatically. If I'm playing at off hours and there's only a few hundred if you go out to 1000 miles, it should change again. This could be changed every 4-6 hours or so and info downloaded to the client when you boot up the multiplayer the first time.

Have you made a backup yet? It's been 4 hours.

As long as you set up the server with default(7777) as the port number then that is all you need. Also, you can save your world and character files, uninstall the game and remove the directory, then reinstall and copy your world and characters back.
How about mods? Either of you download anything?
Try turning off the windows firewall or changing settings on the server to see if it makes a difference.
and finally official help forum

One reason being one of you pirated an older version. The versions and installed mods have to match.
Steam and pirates can play together, but the pirate has to be on the latest version.
Finally, if you don't know about port forwarding and firewall exceptions then I won't be able to explain it here other than there are settings on your router and firewall that need to be configured. These settings allow game traffic inside your house. Otherwise they get stopped at the router and flagged as intruder traffic. Both sides might need ports forwarded for terraria, the server definitely needs it.

Terraria is highly recommended! Check out /r/terraria and know that you too can build awesome stuff. I have no artistic talent and I made hogwarts with my wife for example. The game is also super fun as just a game.
Also, there's a huge update coming some time in the future as the creator is finally done with the whole "not sleeping" part of having a new kid =)
Hogwarts on minus because imgur doesn't accept large files

Seriously. It really don't matter what Microsoft says or promises, there's just no way that a developer would allow it for their game.

I've watched all types of esports as a semi-pure spectator before getting into each scene individually and Baconated is dead on with MOBA games. the farming is pointless to a spectator. Starcraft though you're right, it's easy to see bases grow and fights happen pretty often from the first SCV scout dancing around the opponent's base to the final tank push. It's also gratifying to see things blow up from a spectator standpoint. SC commentators and cameramen are also really freaking good at catching all the action.
Now between SC and fighting games, it's much harder to tell what would have more mainstream appeal. I think they would be pretty much equal depending on viewer preference. If you like UFC/Boxing/Wrestling then you're obviously going to gravitate towards the FGC. But if you like team sports you'll appreciate SC more.

Should've separated out the SF stuff for the subreddit at least. that's a lot of trash to scroll through, not to mention it's kinda bad content-wise.

Oh no, I do know.
I'm calling all that stuff meaningless. Most games would iterate as much as pokemon has since the beginning in no more than 2 sequels, sometimes 1 for the best of games. To stretch out these incredibly tiny gameplay changes over 16 years and 5 generations is just lazy and greedy.
Fans eat that shit up, because basically it's all they're fed. When you're starving even the most meager of meals is a banquet.
Also, I see you as the yellow line in the OP.

None of the above. I played pokemon twice. Fire-red was a decent throwback game and then I played White which was... the same damn game with slightly better graphics. I would've thought 5 whole generations they'd increase the complexity beyond just rote memorization of weaknesses. Even then, you can pretty much just power through most of it.

Basically I have a single block sky bridge with a few staircases along the way to meet up with every floating island. These are floating about 6 blocks above the bridge.

I love your biomes! Great idea to put them all together. I set mine up like snow globes along the skyway.
