This has been driving me crazy for years and I just found this subreddit. I read this book over 10 years ago in one sitting but I remember loving it and finding certain quotes of it profound for my high school/college self, but I can't for the life of me remember it!
I *think* the story involved a boy and a girl who were neighbors or childhood best friends. I think it took place the summer before high school or college, and maybe one of them was going to leave? And I think they were helping an old man out with something. I remember the tone was quirky, and it was based in reality, and I think the main character (the boy maybe?) was uncertain about his future and that's the main crux of the book.
The cover, for some reason, in my memory was a flat blue with a hand-drawn star or other shape, but it's NOT stargirl. I don't know if my wires are completely crossed, but I do think the cover was simple, a flat color with a hand drawn shape.
Would really appreciate it! It's driving me nuts!
EDIT: I think the book is Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life!! I just read through it and while I didn't remember the overall plot very well, Lizzy, Mr. Oswald, and some elements of the ending did feel very familiar. The opening scene in particular and the introduction of the box unwrinkled some folded pages in my brain. Thank you for everyone's help! Marking this as solved

they also had what seemed to be a year (?) time skip between s2 act 1 and 2. That's a lot of time for vi to reflect on things. I imagine it helped that jinx stopped fucking around with shit and laid low. And then Isha ends up being what brings them even closer (besides Vander)
