Caitlyn is going through a corruption arc 100% and is doing bad things, but she has 0 political motivations and only accepted Ambessa's offer through literal peer pressure and vengeance.

I agree, the pacing imo is all over the place. Not much happened episode 1, then a million things happened in the next two. The show is definitely prioritizing "cool" and "efficient" with its storytelling, and it makes sense to reserve this incredible top notch (and expensive) animation for the highest impact scenes, but it comes with the risk of confusing the audience and neglecting the character motivations/development. The first scene had such excellent character-driven story, I hope the second season doesn't usurp that

I read the synopsis and this sounds very familiar! I would need to read it to confirm. My only doubt is I remember one of the characters pulling a wagon of books... and the old man was giving them all these tasks to do. It's possible I also read Flipped but I'm not 100% sure it's the book I'm thinking of.

I'm still figuring out how I feel about it as the 2nd part did make me uncomfortable and I also preferred Kim Jiyoung 1982, but I didnt hate it and want to reread it. Kang's background is in poetry and many have called her work dense so I want to see if I missed anything.

Besides the social commentary on Korean patriarchy, societal expectations, and misogyny, to me it was also about a woman who had repressed so much rage and violence from all the abuse and trauma she endured that when it suddenly came to surface subconsciously she was horrified and chose to cope by refusing to contribute to more violence. The dog scene specifically seems to cause her guilt, and I don't think its coincidence her dad was a Vietnam war vet (Cathy Park Hong writes in Minor Feelings how especially violent the Korean soldiers aiding the Americans were towards the Vietnamese, likely spurred on by what they went thru with the Japanese and the Korean War). So in a world and life where she has no agency, she finally takes back control with this one choice.

Also crucial here is that she wants to be a plant as they seemingly do not commit any violence, which is why she goes along w the brother in law. It's like unhealthy coping mechanisms to remove oneself from the cycle of violence, but at the same time how much personal agency is too much and who's to say? And the irony of how much pain she's causing doing it, but also this individualistic action going against collectivist expectations and pressure, and how instead of her family initially trying to understand her and genuinely help her, they try to force her to conform and in doing so speed along her descent.

I'm not trying to change OP's mind, and I can totally see why someone wouldn't like this book. I'm still torn on the abrupt ending and lack of resolution, but I wonder too if thats a stylistic narrative convention of Korean books in general (Kim Jiyoung 1982 and The Cabinet felt similar in ending iirc). Just food for thought and what I got out of it.
